Deep learning-based hyperspectral and multispectral fusion techniques: Review, optimization, and perspectives

Hyperspectral and Multispectral Image Fusion (HMIF) aim to acquire high spatial and spectral resolution images, which overcomes the inherent limitations of a single imaging device and effectively extends the applicability of spectral images on various downstream tasks. In recent years, Deep Learning (DL)-based image fusion technology breaks through the many limitations of traditional methods, rapidly develops a variety of neural network architectures and improvement strategies, and gradually overcomes a series of practical difficulties. However, a comprehensive overview of these deep learning architectures and various improvement techniques is still lacking. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of deep learning techniques on HMIF, organize the fusion paradigms according to different researchers’ understanding and hypotheses of the problem, and sort out the common optimization strategies of neural network models, such as attention mechanism, multi-feature learning, combined with the variational and unmixing models of deep learning. In addition, we also provide a detailed compendium of the practical challenges and corresponding solution strategies for the first time, which involves the spatial-temporal misregistration, generalization enhancement and high-magnification fusion problems. Finally, we sort out and categorize the commonly used evaluation metrics for fused datasets, and discuss the potential research directions in HMIF. Through these works, we hope to provide a quick and clear reference for aspiring researchers in this area.

Background: The widespread use of electronic health records in the clinical and biomedical fields makes the removal of protected health information (PHI) essential to maintain privacy. However, a significant portion of information is recorded in unstructured textual forms, posing a challenge for deidentification. In multilingual countries, medical records could be written in a mixture of more than one language, referred to as code mixing. Most current clinical natural language processing techniques are designed for monolingual text, and there is a need to address the deidentification of code-mixed text. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and underlying mechanism of fine-tuned pretrained language models (PLMs) in identifying PHI in the code-mixed context. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the potential of prompting large language models (LLMs) for recognizing PHI in a zero-shot manner. Methods: We compiled the first clinical code-mixed deidentification data set consisting of text written in Chinese and English. We explored the effectiveness of fine-tuned PLMs for recognizing PHI in code-mixed content, with a focus on whether PLMs exploit naming regularity and mention coverage to achieve superior performance, by probing the developed models’ outputs to examine their decision-making process. Furthermore, we investigated the potential of prompt-based in-context learning of LLMs for recognizing PHI in code-mixed text. Results: The developed methods were evaluated on a code-mixed deidentification corpus of 1700 discharge summaries. We observed that different PHI types had preferences in their occurrences within the different types of language-mixed sentences, and PLMs could effectively recognize PHI by exploiting the learned name regularity. Speaker verification has been widely and successfully adopted in many mission-critical areas for user identification. The training of speaker verification requires a large amount of data, therefore users usually need to adopt third-party data (e.g., data from the Internet or third-party data company). This raises the question of whether adopting untrusted third-party data can pose a security threat. In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to inject the hidden backdoor for infecting speaker verification models by poisoning the training data. Specifically, we design a clustering-based attack scheme where poisoned samples from different clusters will contain different triggers (i.e., pre-defined utterances), based on our understanding of verification tasks. The infected models behave normally on benign samples, while attacker-specified unenrolled triggers will successfully pass the verification even if the attacker has no information about the enrolled speaker. We also demonstrate that existing back-door attacks cannot be directly adopted in attacking speaker verification. Our approach not only provides a new perspective for designing novel attacks, but also serves as a strong baseline for improving the robustness of verification methods.

Java 8 has introduced lambda expressions, a core feature of functional programming. Since its introduction, there is an increasing trend of lambda adoptions in Java projects. Developers often adopt lambda expressions to simplify code, avoid code duplication or simulate other functional features. However, we observe that lambda expressions can also incur different types of side effects (i.e., performance issues and memory leakages) or even severe bugs, and developers also frequently remove lambda expressions in their implementations. Consequently, the advantages of utilizing lambda expressions can be significantly compromised by the collateral side effects. In this study, we present the first large-scale, quantitative and qualitative empirical study to characterize and understand inappropriate usages of lambda expressions. Particularly, we summarized seven main reasons for the removal of lambdas as well as seven common migration patterns. For instance, we observe that lambdas using customized functional interfaces are more likely to be removed by developers. Moreover, from a complementary perspective, we performed a user study over 30 developers to seek the underlying reasons why they remove lambda expressions in practice. Finally, based on our empirical results, we made suggestions on scenarios to avoid lambda usages for Java developers and also pointed out future directions for researchers.

Decentralized Task Offloading in Edge computing: A Multi-User Multi-Armed Bandit Approach

Mobile edge computing facilitates users to offload computation tasks to edge servers for meeting their stringent delay requirements. Previous works mainly explore task offloading when system-side information is given (e.g., server processing speed, cellular data rate), or centralized offloading under system uncertainty. But both generally fall short to handle task placement involving many coexisting users in a dynamic and uncertain environment. In this paper, we develop a multi-user offloading framework considering unknown yet stochastic system-side information to enable a decentralized user-initiated service placement. Specifically, we formulate the dynamic task placement as an online multi-user multi-armed bandit process, and propose a decentralized epoch based offloading (DEBO) to optimize user rewards which are subjected under network delay. We show that DEBO can deduce the optimal user-server assignment, thereby achieving a close-to-optimal service performance and tight O(log T) offloading regret. Moreover, we generalize DEBO to various common scenarios such as unknown reward gap, dynamic entering or leaving of clients, and fair reward distribution, while further exploring when users' offloaded tasks require heterogeneous computing resources. Particularly, we accomplish a sub-linear regret for each of these instances. Real measurements based evaluations corroborate the superiority of our offloading schemes over state-of-the-art approaches in optimizing delay-sensitive rewards. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. As systems based on opaque Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to flourish in diverse real-world applications, understanding these black box models has become paramount. In response, Explainable AI (XAI) has emerged as a field of research with practical and ethical benefits across various domains. This paper not only highlights the advancements in XAI and its application in real-world scenarios but also addresses the ongoing challenges within XAI, emphasizing the need for broader perspectives and collaborative efforts. We bring together experts from diverse fields to identify open problems, striving to synchronize research agendas and accelerate XAI in practical applications. By fostering collaborative discussion and interdisciplinary cooperation, we aim to propel XAI forward, contributing to its continued success. Our goal is to put forward a comprehensive proposal for advancing XAI. To achieve this goal, we present a manifesto of 27 open problems categorized into nine categories. These challenges encapsulate the complexities and nuances of XAI and offer a road map for future research. The lung is one of the prime respiratory organs in human physiology, and its abnormality will severely disrupt the respiratory system. Lung Nodule (LN) is one of the abnormalities, and early screening and treatment are necessary to reduce its harshness. The proposed work aims to implement the Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) segmentation methodology to extract the LN in various lung CT slices, such as axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. This work consists of the following phases; (i) Image collection and pre-processing, (ii) Ground-truth generation, (iii) CNN-supported segmentation, and (iv) Performance evaluation and validation. In this work, the merit of pre-trained CNN segmentation schemes is verified using (i) One-fold training and (ii) Two-fold training methods. The test images for this study are collected from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) database. The experimental investigation is executed using Python®, and the outcome of this study confirms that the VGG-SegNet helps to get better values of Jaccard (>88%), Dice (>93%), and Accuracy (>96%) compared to other CNN methods.

The eye is the prime sensory organ in physiology, and the abnormality in the eye severely influences the vision system. Therefore, eye irregularity is commonly assessed using imaging schemes, and Fundus Retinal Image (FRI) supported eye screening is one of the ophthalmological practices. This work proposed a Deep-Learning Procedure (DLP) to recognize Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) in FI. The proposed work presents the experimental work with different DLP methods found in the literature. This work is executed with two modes; (i) DR detection using conventional deep-features and (ii) DR discovery using deep ensemble features. To demonstrate this work, 1800 fundus images (900 regular and 900 DR class) are considered for the assessment, and the advantage of proposed plan is confirmed using various performance metrics. The experimental outcome of this study confirms that the AlexNet-based detection provides a better detection (>96%), and the deep ensemble features of AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet18 provide a detection accuracy of >98% on the chosen FRI database.

In high-performance computing (HPC), data and metadata are stored on special server nodes and client applications access the servers' data and metadata through a network, which induces network latencies and resource contention. These server nodes are typically equipped with (slow) magnetic disks, while the client nodes store temporary data on fast SSDs or even on non-volatile main memory (NVMM). Therefore, the full potential of parallel file systems can only be reached if fast client side storage devices are included into the overall storage architecture. In this article, we propose an NVMM-based hierarchical persistent client cache for the Lustre file system (NVMM-LPCC for short). NVMM-LPCC implements two caching modes: a read and write mode (RW-NVMM-LPCC for short) and a read only mode (RO-NVMM-LPCC for short). NVMM-LPCC integrates with the Lustre Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) solution and the Lustre layout lock mechanism to provide consistent persistent caching services for I/O applications running on client nodes, meanwhile maintaining a global unified namespace of the entire Lustre file system. The evaluation results presented in this article show that NVMM-LPCC can increase the average read throughput by up to 35.80 times and the average write throughput by up to 9.83 times compared with the native Lustre system, while providing excellent scalability. © 2021 Association for computing Machinery.
