Understanding episodic memory formation of real-world events is essential for the investigation of human cognition. Most studies have stressed on delimiting the upper boundaries of this memory by using memorization tasks with conditional experimental paradigms, rather than the performance of everyday tasks. However, naturally occurring sensory stimuli are multimodal and dynamic. In an effort to investigate the encoding and retrieval of episodic memory under more naturalistic and ecological conditions, we here demonstrate a memory experiment that employs audio-visual movies as naturalistic stimuli. Electroencephalography measurements were used to analyze neural activations during memory formation. We found that oscillatory activities in the theta frequency bands on the left parietal lobe, and gamma frequency bands on the temporal lobes are related to overall memory formation. Theta and gamma power of the frontal lobes, and gamma power of the occipital lobes were both increased during retrieval tasks. Furthermore, subjects’ memory retrieval performance on the query task was used to clarify our experimental results. Correlation between behavioral differences and neural activation was observed in the same regions. Our results extend the previous results of neurocognitive studies on memory formation via naturalistic stimuli, neural oscillations, and behavioral analysis combined. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

This paper presents a software interface that allows a user to control different types of robotic systems by using a Brain-Machine Interface. Unlike common device-specific BMI systems, our software architecture maps simple EEG-based commands to diverse functionalities depending on the robotic platform, so the user does not have learn to generate new EEG commands for different robots. The graphic user interface provides a mechanism that allows the user to navigate through menus using EMG signals (i.e. eye-blink), and then execute robot commands using EEG signals. Our software is based on a modular design that allows the integration of new robotic platforms with easy customization. Our current prototype explores the controllability of a humanoid robot, a flying robot and a pan-tilt robot using the proposed software interface. Experimental evidence shows that the system achieves good user satisfaction as well as easy controllability of different types of robotic systems.

We describe a virtual-reality framework for investigating startle-response behavior in fish. Using real-time three-dimensional tracking, we generate looming stimuli at a specific location on a computer screen, such that the shape and size of the looming stimuli change according to the fish's perspective and location in the tank. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the setup through experiments on Giant danio and compute the success rate in eliciting a response. We also estimate visual startle sensitivity by presenting the stimulus from different directions around the fish head. The aim of this work is to provide the basis for quantifying escape behavior in fish schools.

Hybrid reactive-deliberative architectures in robotics combine reactive sub-policies for fast action execution with goal sequencing and deliberation. The need for replanning, however, presents a challenge for reactivity and hinders the potential for guarantees about the plan quality. In this paper, we argue that one can integrate abstract planning provided by symbolic dynamic programming in first order logic into a reactive robotic architecture, and that such an integration is in fact natural and has advantages over traditional approaches. In particular, it allows the integrated system to spend off-line time planning for a policy, and then use the policy reactively in open worlds, in situations with unexpected outcomes, and even in new environments, all by simply reacting to a state change executing a new action proposed by the policy. We demonstrate the viability of the approach by integrating the FODD-Planner with the robotic DIARC architecture showing how an appropriate interface can be defined and that this integration can yield robust goal-based action execution on robots in open worlds.

It has been suggested that the human mirror neuron system (MNS) plays a critical role in action observation and imitation. However, the transformation of perspective between the observed (allocentric) and the imitated (egocentric) actions has received little attention. We expand a previously proposed biologically plausible MNS model by incorporating general spatial transformation capabilities that are assumed to be encoded by the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the superior parietal lobule (SPL) as well as investigating their interactions with the inferior frontal gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule. The results reveal that the IPS/SPL could process the frame of reference and the viewpoint transformations, and provide invariant visual representations for the temporo-parieto-frontal circuit. This allows the imitator to imitate the action performed by a demonstrator under various perspectives while replicating results from the literatures. Our results confirm and extend the importance of perspective transformation processing during action observation and imitation.

In order to approach human hand performance levels, artificial anthropomorphic hands/fingers have increasingly incorporated human biomechanical features. However, the performance of finger reaching movements to visual targets involving the complex kinematics of multijointed, anthropomorphic actuators is a difficult problem. This is because the relationship between sensory and motor coordinates is highly nonlinear, and also often includes mechanical coupling of the two last joints. Recently, we developed a cortical model that learns the inverse kinematics of a simulated anthropomorphic finger. Here, we expand this previous work by assessing if this cortical model is able to learn the inverse kinematics for an actual anthropomorphic humanoid finger having its two last joints coupled and controlled by pneumatic muscles. The findings revealed that single 3D reaching movements, as well as more complex patterns of motion of the humanoid finger, were accurately and robustly performed by this cortical model while producing kinematics comparable to those of humans. This work contributes to the development of a bioinspired controller providing adaptive, robust and flexible control of dexterous robotic and prosthetic hands.

Neurons in the medial entorhinal cortex of rats have been found to respond in a two-dimensional hexagonal "grid" pattern anchored to the environment. "Grid cells" with different spatial frequencies are thought to contribute to the creation of unimodal "place" cell responses useful for spatial navigation. In this paper we present results from an analog VLSI circuit that generates a hexagonal grid of activity using continuous attractor dynamics and transmits this pattern via neuron-like spikes. This circuit is a component of a larger system for modeling the neural circuits underlying mammalian spatial navigation.
