Approximately a decade ago, engineering educators at several institutions began introducing the concept of a freshman engineering or introduction to engineering course. Today there is hardly any undergraduate engineering program that does not require the freshman student to take such a course. With its large undergraduate engineering program the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UW-Platteville) now offers 12-15 sections of a similar course entitled Introduction to Engineering every fall semester. Earlier assessments indicated that the course was generally well received, and several key issues were addressed. The issue at hand now, is the content of the course. Because of the wide range of background in math.science, and computing of our freshmen group, it is a challenge for any instructor to go in depth on any engineering concept without running the risk of losing those at the lower competency level and at the same time keeping the course interesting and challenging for those who are well into the advanced sequence. Faculty with varied backgrounds teaching the course are grappling to find innovative ways to fulfill the main objectives of the course, viz., retention, offer a better understanding of engineering disciplines, and prepare students well for the intended course of study. Nine years after the first offering of this course, it is time to reflect on what this course has accomplished, and the dilemmas faced by the instructors.

This paper presents a new document segmentation algorithm, called context-adapted wavelet-domain hidden Markov tree (CAHMT) model, which extends a recently emerged wavelet-domain hidden Markov tree (HMT) model. The proposed CAHMT can achieve more accurate quality with low computation complexity in document segmentation. In addition to further improving the segmenting performance, we combine differential operator and the lowest frequency subband with CAHMT and produce much better visually segmentation quality than the HMT does.

A simple approach is developed to use semantics as defined by virtual actions to guide the construction of manipulable symbol representations for objects and actions, in particular to obtain a model of syntactic processing in the developing infant. This uses a simplified model of the frontal lobes, and in particular the various sets of neurons involved in the process of chunking of temporal sequences observed in monkeys. The manner in which such neurons play a role in phrase structure grammar is elucidated at a simple level.

Given a sequence of multivariate simultaneous approximants, a linear combination of iterates (the iterated Boolean sum) of the elements is used to construct a sequence with accelerated convergence for smooth functions. Explicit and asymptotic estimates for the error in approximation are given for operators possessing appropriate error estimates. The general results are applied to the tensor-product and simplicial Bernstein operators and simplicial Durrmeyer operators, and a combination of the triangular Bernstein operators and the trilinearly-blended transfinite interpolant of Barnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon. In addition, simultaneous approximation estimates are derived for the q-dimensional Bernstein operators for use in the applications.

Until recently almost all engineering curricula around the country required students to take one or more courses in structured programming. In order to keep up with the contemporary demands in the work place, a need to use new educational approaches in teaching engineering courses has become essential. In recent years, due to the explosive market of high quality, user friendly, versatile and application-specific software, many programs are in the process of redesigning their requirements within ABET guidelines with regard to programming language and additional applications of specialized problem solving software in individual courses. In this paper, the authors present a study of current requirements and upcoming changes. The issues which prompted the project include inadequate application of traditional computer programming in courses, lack of student interest towards these programming courses, and a difference in attitude of engineering faculty from different degree granting programs. A survey of undergraduate engineering programs around the country is being conducted in order to understand current practices and reflection of future trends. The paper presents the methodology of survey, the profile of the respondents, faculty involvement, and factors influencing their choices of language.

Focal ulcerative dermatitis (FUD), commonly referred to as "breast buttons," is a chronic skin disease affecting unfeathered skin over the kneel of the breast of turkeys and occurring most frequently in males. A series of six studies with male turkeys (n = 11,680) examined risk factors associated with the occurrence of FUD. Factors studied included age, litter treatments (perlite, lime, or brooding on crenelated paper), litter type (pine sawdust, soft pine shavings, coarse pine shavings, peanut hulls, or fine pine shavings), litter conditions (moisture, pH, or ammonia), commercial strain of turkey, and body weight. In all studies, occurrence of FUD is low (< 1%) in birds less than 10 wk of age and peaks (average of 19%) between 16 and 18 wk of age. Three trials with male turkeys concluded that litter type can significantly influence the incidence of FUD, with the highest incidence in birds raised on coarse pine shavings. A series of three experiments also conluded that commercial strain of turkey significantly influenced the incidence of FUD, with the lowest incidence in Hybrid turkeys. Litter treatments, litter conditions, and body weight did not significantly influence the incidence of FUD.

The micro-grain array processor (MGAP) is a family of two-dimensional, micro-grained array processors. The processor cell architecture is extremely compact and simple, ensuring fine grainness, a very high processor density, and programming flexibility. Flexibility is maintained through a programmable interconnect which clusters array cells into larger computational units. We discuss the design and optimization issues of the MGAP-2, both at the processor array and system levels. Various design strategies and tradeoffs are being investigated at both levels. We show how lessons learned from building and using the MGAP-1 have been applied in this new design effort. We also describe our MGAP programming environment and an application example-the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform, a powerful image compression tool.

Patches of reverse tilt in a twisted nematic liquid crystal display device may be removed by inducing the same small angle of pretilt at both solid surfaces. Continuum theory is used to investigate the effect of this initial tilt upon a Freedericksz transition in a twisted nematic in an electric field. In particular, the author describes the various initial alignments that can occur and verify that the field has little influence until it approaches the threshold value corresponding to a similar cell without tilt.
