We propose an adaptive control method with a finitetime convergence rate for the trajectory tracking control problem in robot manipulators. We extend Slotine and Li's conventional adaptive control method for robot manipulators and compare the convergence rates through simulation with one- and two-link manipulators. We also compare the convergence rates through experiments with a one-link manipulator. Both results show that the proposed method converges more quickly than Slotine and Li's method.

This paper considers a non-smooth control Lyapunov function (CLF) design problem for global asymptotic stabilization of a system defined on a manifold. This problem can be addressed by the multilayer minimum projection method with singular point assignment, which considers manifolds, called multilayered spaces, different from those where the control system is originally defined. This requires a multilayered space satisfying specific conditions. However, a design method for the required space has not previously been provided. In this paper, we propose a design method for a multilayered space guaranteed to satisfy the required conditions using the concept of a multigraph and apply it in a robot navigation example.

Asteroids have been observed both from the ground and through space missions for decades, which accumulated large amount of their observational data. These data are used to estimate the sizes, orbits, and even possible chemical compositions of asteroids. Even though the chemical composition is generally difficult to be accurately determined without a sample return or in-situ observation by a spacecraft, asteroids are classified based on their reflectance spectra, which are compared with those of meteorites, which are known to be mostly originated from asteroids. This scheme works reasonably well for some asteroid types, but others, mostly featureless ones in reflectance spectra, remained controversial due to the fact that the observational data of asteroids and measured data of meteorites are different in terms of the data coverage, precision and resolution. Our aim is to connect asteroids with meteorites based on sparse modelling in order to search for the optimal integration scheme for two different databases without relying on preliminary knowledge. For the above purpose, we develop large databases of asteroids and meteorites for easy application of sparse modelling. Through our analyses including principal component analysis, Bayesian spectral deconvolution and dimensionality reduction, we found that our data-driven approach can extract potential information without using empirical knowledge. Our methods show a new type of data handling scheme for asteroid and meteorite data, potentially having a significant contribution for future missions.

In this study, the differences in the physiological effects of respiratory control using photic stimuli based on biological signals were examined. Comparing the alpha attenuation coefficient (AAC) before and after the task, it increased with the short-period illuminance pattern and decreased with the middle and long-period illuminance patterns. From the results of Lorenz plot (LP) areas, the arousal level increased and parasympathetic nervous system activity decreased with the short-period illuminance pattern. On the other hand, the arousal level decreased and parasympathetic nervous system activity increased with the middle and long-period illuminance patterns. These results suggest that the short-period illuminance pattern induced an active state, and the middle and long-period illuminance patterns induced a relaxed state.

In this research, a system for writing Japanese calligraphy using the whole body motion of a humanoid robot has been developed. It consists of an instruction system using a virtual haptic interface and a humanoid robot with a brush on its right hand. The trajectory of human handwriting is given by the instruction system. The humanoid robot can write characters larger than its own size with a walking motion. The experimental results using a humanoid robot Hoap-2 are presented. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York.

In StarCraft, a popular RTS game, reconnaissance of the enemy camp is essential in order to anticipate the tactics and strategies of the enemy. However, if enemy forces are located in the shortest path to its camp, it is not possible for scouts to reach its enemy camp by using a standard shortest pathfinder. In this paper, we propose a method for controlling scouts using potential fields, which improves the possibility that our scouts discover a penetration route to the enemy camp. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a tweet recommendation method that encourages people to communicate with each other on the microblogging site, "Twitter". To achieve this, we have developed a novel recommendation technique that does not only use the Bag of Words included in a tweet something written on Twitter but also human relations, i.e. followings, followers, and mentions. We also use latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) to extract latent topics of human relations and tweets topics. Our proposal incorporates human topics in tweet topics. We present experimental results that show that the proposed method outperforms a simple tweet recommendation technique that does not use human relation information.

This paper is about our research on user pathway prediction for being applied to a location aware system. In particular, we propose a prediction method based on an jV-gram model with Kneser-Ney smoothing (KNS), originally developed by other researchers for statistical language model smoothing, and introduce the use of the transition information of similar users into KNS. We then verify the performance of the proposed prediction method by comparing it with an existing prediction method and a prediction method based on KNS using all users' information. The comparison result reveals that the proposed method outperforms its counterparts on all performance metrics: precision, recall, F-measure, and CA.

The rate at which body movement occurs during sleep is an important element in the estimation of sleep stages. Thus, 'body movement density (BMD)', the number of body movements that occur over a period of time, can be used as an index reflecting the quantity of actual body movements measured using an infrared motion sensor. In the present study, sleep stage determined by polysomnography (PSG) as the main physiology index is compared to body movement data. The stages of sleep follow the international standards of Rechtschaffen and Kales. The transitions between sleep levels within the sleep cycle and changes in BMD were synchronous. Using the proposed method, a concordance rate of 76.9% (SD±24.0) between the BMD cycle and sleep cycle was obtained. Therefore, estimating the changes in sleep cycles is possible using only BMD. © 2012 IEEE.
