Toward a fractal spectrum approach for neutron and gamma pulse shape discrimination

Accurately selecting neutron signals and discriminating γsignals from a mixed radiation field is a key research issue in neutron detection. This paper proposes a fractal spectrum discrimination approach by means of different spectral characteristics of neutrons and γ rays. Figure of merit and average discriminant error ratio are used together to evaluate the discrimination effects. Different neutron and γ signals with various noise and pulse pile-up are simulated according to real data in the literature. The proposed approach is compared with the digital charge integration and pulse gradient methods. It is found that the fractal approach exhibits the best discrimination performance, followed by the digital charge integration method and the pulse gradient method, respectively. The fractal spectrum approach is not sensitive to high frequency noise and pulse pile-up. This means that the proposed approach has superior performance for effective and efficient anti-noise and high discrimination in neutron detection.

We have implementation a wristwatch that utilizes a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) and a CsI(Tl) crystal for radiation dose rate detection. Compared to traditional personal dosimeters, it offers advantages such as high detection efficiency and portability. The measurement module incorporates a scintillation detector, a composite material comprised of CsI(Tl) crystal and SiPM, complemented by a signal conditioning module that boasts a pulse shaping circuit. The wristwatch, utilizing the functionalities of the CH579M microcontroller and advanced design algorithms, can rapidly respond to sudden fluctuations in environmental radiation levels. After testing, the detector's signal-to-noise ratio was measured at 12 dB, with a pulse width of 25 µs. The actual measurement range of the wristwatch is from 0. 1 to 250 μSv/h. © 2024 SPIE.

Integration of nonlinear loads in modern power systems has led to many issues arising mainly due to the generation of harmonic currents and the presence of reactive power, both having adverse effects on power quality and grid stability. Harmonic currents cause increased losses, overheating of equipment, and voltage distortions, while reactive power imbalances result in inefficiencies in power delivery and compromised system performance. To overcome these problems, a Shunt Active Power FIlter design and an optimal control strategy for harmonic mitigation and reactive power compensation are proposed in this paper. The design incorporates an optimized anti-windup PI controller for DC-link voltage regulation and an optimized output filter to enhance the quality of the injected current. This design is formulated as an optimization problem and solved using the Golden Jackal Optimizer. MATLAB/Simulink simulations validate the proposed method under different operating conditions, covering dynamic change of loads and unbalanced grid conditions. The result shows a remarkable reduction in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of grid current, and reactive power compensation meanwhile maintaining the stability of the grid. © The Author(s) 2025.

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based thermal-hydraulics and safety analyses of Lead-based Fast Reactor (LFR) have attracted great attentions in recent years. Commercial CFD tools have been widely used in the 3D simulations of pool-type reactors owing to their powerful abilities in geometric modeling and meshing. Compared with the commercial CFD tools, OpenFOAM is a free open-source CFD code, which is more flexible to perform multi-physics coupling activities. In this paper, in order to develop a solver for simulating the coupled flow and heat transfer behaviors of fluid (coolant) and fuel pin in LFR, the fuel pin Heat Conduction (HC) model was coupled to the modified icoFoam solver of OpenFOAM. Verifications were conducted by the steady-state coupled simulation of fluid and fuel pin heat transfer behaviors, comparing with the MPC-LBE code which has been verified by the benchmarks for LFR fuel pin channel. The results simulated by the coupled solver proposed in this paper agreed well with the ones provided by the MPC-LBE code. This study lays a foundation for the further development of transient safety analysis code for LFR in our future work. © 2023, The Author(s).

In recent years, forest fires caused by transmission line tree line faults occur frequently, transmission line tree line faults affect the safety and reliability of power grid operation, a serious threat to the safety of natural resources and people's property. In this paper, for the 35kV transmission line tree line faults caused by hill fire, built a 35kV line tree line fault experimental platform, in the capacitance current of 248 mA and 132 mA conditions, respectively, selected bamboo, pine and cedar three typical trees as a research sample, to carry out the three kinds of trees tree line fault fire time experiments. The burning phenomena, charring channels, and infrared images of different trees were recorded and analyzed, and the corresponding laws were drawn up to summarize the longest and shortest fire starting times of different capacitance currents and different trees. The research in this paper can provide technical reference for the development of measures to prevent fire caused by tree line faults in 35kV transmission lines. © 2024 IEEE.

Voltage transformer as a substation important equipment, assuming the role of measurement, control and protection. Equipment in the operation process is susceptible to temperature and other factors that cause insulation defects, need to carry out regular insulation preventive testing. In this paper, we take 110 kV series-type voltage transformer as the research object, and use four different wiring methods to explore the changes of tanδ value and capacitance under different ambient temperatures, insulating oil temperatures, and insulating oil moisture conditions, to verify the applicability and reasonableness of the relevant values in the Regulations, and to provide an effective basis for the series-type voltage transformer to determine the insulation faults of the equipment through the tanδ value. The results show that the tanδ value increases with the rise of temperature under different wiring methods, while the capacitance is basically unchanged;the end shielding method is the most sensitive to the moisture of insulating oil under different temperature conditions;when the insulation is normal, the conventional inverse wiring is more sensitive to the temperature change;when the insulation is faulty, the conventional positive wiring is more sensitive;to determine whether there are insulation defects of voltage transformers should be measured by the tanδ value in lower temperature as the main criterion, and the Kegulations' will be used to determine whether there are insulation defects of the series type voltage transformer through the tanδ value. Judgment of whether the voltage transformer insulation defects should be measured at lower temperatures tanδ as the main criterion, Kegulations' in the relevant tanδ value criterion should be adjusted in a timely manner. © 2024 IEEE.

For the advanced liquid metal cooled pool-type reactors, natural circulation of coolant is essentially important to ensure reactor safety under either normal or accident conditions, thus the thermal-hydraulic analysis of natural circulation behaviors is significant. Compared with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, such ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM is one of the most common open-source CFD codes, which has more free programming environment and advantages of convenient function development. In this study, a new solver GTFoam for the natural circulation simulation was developed by adding energy conservative equation model and natural circulation model into the original icoFoam solver of OpenFOAM. For the above GTFoam solver, code verification was carried out by using the square cavity flow driven by regional heat source, and results were compared with the ones calculated by ANSYS Fluent. It was demonstrated that the results simulated by GTFoam solver agreed well with the ones calculated by ANSYS Fluent. This study can be used in the further development of transient safety analysis solver based on OpenFOAM for LFR in our future work. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The tree direct contact line is the fault type that has the greatest impact on the power system in the tree-line contradiction. At present, most of the existing studies are aimed at the monitoring and disposal of tree-line faults, but there are few studies on the impedance characteristics of trees when tree- line faults occur. Based on the 10k V simulated test line, this paper experimentally studies the change process, development trend and change characteristics of tree impedance when trees of different types, lengths and moisture contents have tree-line faults, as well as the influence of different system capacitive currents on fault characteristics. The experiment took three different species of pine, eucalyptus and bamboo as the test objects. The results showed that the impedance characteristics of the three different species of trees during tree line contact discharge were different, among which pine and eucalyptus had larger impedance and bamboo had smaller impedance. And the correlation between tree length and tree impedance is not strong. Under the premise of the same tree species, the impedance of the part with high moisture content is small, and the impedance of the part with low moisture content is large. In the time range of 0 20s, the impedance of trees decreases with the increase of discharge time. © 2023 IEEE.

Based on the 10kV simulated test line, this paper builds a tree line fault simulation test platform for 10 kV distribution lines. The common tree species under the transmission line in Sichuan are selected as test sample trees. The fire time of different types of trees after tree line failure is studied. The test study obtained the fire time of three kinds of trees under the condition of capacitance current of different lines to the ground. It was found that the fire time is not directly related to the tree and impedance. The main factors affecting the fire time are the thickness of the tree and the size of the capacitance current of the transmission line. The process of tree burning can be divided into 4 stages, namely: arc preheating stage, epidermal carbonization stage, water evaporation stage and branch burning stage, and can correspond to the changing trend of leakage current. The research results can provide technical reference for preventing wildfires caused by transmission line tree line faults. © 2023 IEEE.

Biological evolution has deepened our understanding of nature. Since the advent of civilization, humans have continually explored ways to record what they see and hear, from cave sketches to camera photography, with clarity being a consistent goal. Image super-resolution technology has made significant progress, but early methods like interpolation and filtering couldn't effectively restore details. Traditional convolution methods require high computational and storage resources, limiting their use in hardware-constrained scenarios. Therefore, finding a method that reduces computational resources while ensuring effectiveness is crucial. This paper proposes the Residual Swin Transformer Block based on the Swin Transformer and designs the SR-Swin deep learning model for super-resolution image processing. Experiments show it achieves an average PSNR value of 30.6 dB, indicating good performance. © 2024 IEEE.
