Nonplanar 3D printing is a recently emerged approach to increase surface quality and part strength in additive manufacturing. In this paper, the impact of a nonplanar printing method utilized for the fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique on the resultant surface roughness of printed parts is presented. In particular, the influence of different inclination angles and part orientation on the obtainable surface quality was investigated by comparing a traditional planar printing strategy with a nonplanar finishing solution. A pyramidal geometry was utilized to assess the effect of inclination angle as well as part orientation and relative printhead movement on the surface characteristics. The results show a decrease in obtainable surface roughness for inclination angles up to 25°, while higher angles cause rougher surfaces when compared with results of planar 3D printing strategy. This can be explained by the way the nonplanar nozzle movements interact with previously deposited filament strands by deforming them due to the size of the nozzle and geometry of the 3D printed part. As a consequence, solutions for an improved nonplanar printing technique using Delta FFF printers are suggested that will be investigated in the future work. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2021.

Broad-intensity-range optical nonreciprocity based on feedback-induced Kerr nonlinearity

Nonreciprocal light propagation plays an important role in modern optical systems,from photonic networks to integrated photonics. We propose a nonreciprocal system based on a resonance-frequency-tunable cavity and intensity-adaptive feedback control. Because the feedback-induced Kerr nonlinearity in the cavity is dependent on the incident direction of light,the system exhibits nonreciprocal transmission with a transmission contrast of 0.99 and an insertion loss of 1.5 dB. By utilizing intensity-adaptive feedback control,the operating intensity range of the nonreciprocal system is broadened to 20 dB,which relaxes the limitation of the operating intensity range for nonlinear nonreciprocal systems. Our protocol paves the way to realize high-performance nonreciprocal propagation in optical systems and can also be extended to microwave systems.

Minimal mean kinetic energy modification of the design defect for pitch curve with concave cusps of n-lobe noncircular gear

A modification model with minimal mean kinetic energy characteristic is established of the design defect of pitch curve with concave cusps. The modification model can be solved via the Euler-Lagrange Equation, and the unified algorithm of minimal mean kinetic energy modification for the pitch curve with concave cusps can be developed. Meanwhile, the changing situation of modified transmission ratio can be investigated, and it shows that the design defect can be modified within the smaller transmission error range. Numerical example illustrates the validity and feasibility of the proposed modification model and algorithm. © 2020, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Seawater uranium extraction is a key technology for environmental sustainability with significant potential applications. For the first time, this work synthesized a CTAB/Bent-MOF808 with strong stability, abundant coordination functional groups, and low cost, and assessed its adsorption effectiveness for U (VI) in carbonate solutions. The study explores how pH, contact time, uranium concentration, temperature, carbonate, halide salts, phosphorus, and Ca/Mg ions influence uranium adsorption, with a focus on mechanistic insights through characterization and modeling. Under optimal conditions (temperature of 25 °C, pH 8.0, with a sodium bicarbonate concentration of 2 mmol L −1 and a U(VI) concentration of 50 mg L −1 ), which are similar to the real seawater environment, CTAB/Bent-MOF808 demonstrated superior uranium adsorption performance compared to MOF808 and CTAB/Bent in U(VI)–CO 3 solutions. Under high initial pH, NaHCO 3 , Ca/Mg ions, and halide ion concentrations, the complex's uranium adsorption capacity and removal rate are reduced due to competitive adsorption between ions, as well as increased electrostatic repulsion on the surface. The sorption process was identified as monolayer homogeneous chemical adsorption process by analyzing it with quasi second order kinetic models and Langmuir isotherm models. The inhibitory effect of halide ions is as follows: I − > F − > Br − > Cl − . XPS suggested that the complexation of bromide anion with –COOH and electrostatic attraction could be crucial processes for uranium adsorption. This study offers theoretical insights into uranium extraction from natural uranium-bearing waters and highlights the expanded potential of MOF-based adsorbents in this process, enhancing both efficiency and application scope.

The promotion of gas-electric devices and electricity storage devices brings necessity to realize integrated demand response (IDR) for household multi-energy systems (HMES). This paper proposed an interval optimization method for load scheduling in HMES for IDR, which addresses uncertainties in the system model and considers dynamic energy-source switching among gas, electricity and storage. Controllable loads include washing machine, air conditioner and battery as electric devices, and water heater and kitchenware as gas-electric devices. For minimizing energy cost, an interval optimization model with tolerance degree is converted into a deterministic model based on the interval order relationship and interval probability. Then genetic algorithm is applied for solving the deterministic problem. Case studies show that the interval optimization with tolerance method is robust to HMES uncertainty. For a battery-equipped HMES, the energy cost savings are up to 14.7% compared with the traditional method without considering interval optimization and tolerance degree.

Astrophysical reaction rates with realistic nuclear level densities

Realistic nuclear level densities (NLDs) obtained within the spectral distribution method (SDM) are employed to study nuclear processes of astrophysical interest. The merit of SDM lies in the fact that the NLDs corresponding to many-body shell-model Hamiltonians consisting of residual interaction can be obtained for the full configurational space without recourse to the exact diagnolization of huge matrices. We calculate NLDs and s-wave neutron resonance spacings which agree reasonably well with the available experimental data. By employing these NLDs, we compute reaction cross sections and astrophysical reaction rates for radiative neutron capture in few Fe-group nuclei and compare them with experimental data as well as with those obtained with NLDs from phenomenological and microscopic mean-field models. The results obtained for the NLDs from SDM are able to explain the experimental data quite well. These results are of particular importance since the configuration mixing through the residual interaction naturally accounts for the collective excitations. In the mean-field models, the collective effects are included through the vibrational and rotational enhancement factors, and their NLDs are further normalized at low energies with neutron resonance data.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in investigating binary metal oxides, especially regarding their use in electrocatalysis. Nonetheless, investigations into delafossite-type oxides (DOs), particularly Bi-based variations like NaBiO2, are constrained by their complex nature, structural variety and formation issues. This work presents an innovative synthesis approach to producing monoclinic-phase NaBiO2 by a straightforward and scalable co-precipitation technique. It emphasizes its applications as a remarkably stable and active electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The key advancement is in the specific modification of catalyst loading to alter the material's surface characteristics, exhibiting electrochemically advantageous crystal characteristics. The optimized NaBiO2 sample, produced under regulated loading circumstances, shows a distinctive flower-like petal shape, a large surface area and improved durability. Electrochemical investigation demonstrates exceptional OER activity, characterized by a low overpotential (η) of 243 mV, a minimal Tafel slope (35 mV/dec) and sustained stability exceeding 50 h at a 10 mA/cm2 current density (Cd). The sample has an extraordinarily high electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 2022.25 cm2 and an impressively minimal charge transfer resistance (Rct) of 0.26 Ω. This study establishes a first comprehensive interaction between NaBiO2 catalyst loading and OER efficiency, presenting a novel approach to optimizing delafossite-type oxides for energy-related applications. The results enhance the fundamental comprehension of Bi-based delafossite electrocatalysts and facilitate their widespread use in green energy conversion strategies. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Percolation theory has been widely used to study phase transitions in network systems. It has also successfully explained various macroscopic spreading phenomena across different fields. Yet, the theoretical frameworks have been focusing on direct interactions among nodes, while recent empirical observations have shown that indirect interactions are common in many network systems like social and ecological networks, among others. By investigating the detailed mechanism of both direct and indirect influence on scientific collaboration networks, here we show that indirect influence can play the dominant role in behavioral influence. To address the lack of theoretical understanding of such indirect influence on the macroscopic behavior of the system, we propose a percolation mechanism of indirect interactions called induced percolation. Surprisingly, our model exhibits a unique anisotropy property. Specifically, directed networks show first-order abrupt transitions as opposed to the second-order continuous transition in the same network structure but with undirected links. A mix of directed and undirected links leads to rich hybrid phase transitions. Furthermore, a unique feature of the nonmonotonic pattern is observed in network connectivities near the critical point. We also present an analytical framework to characterize the proposed induced percolation, paving the way to further understanding network dynamics with indirect interactions.

The low cost, high operating voltage, and high energy density of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) make it a promising candidate for power battery applications. Nevertheless, its poor conductivity and performance at high temperatures limit its further application. In this paper, Al-doped LNMO sample was prepared by a hydrothermal strategy, and the influence of Al doping on the electrochemical characteristics of LNMO was examined employing density functional theory calculations. The density of states computations indicates that the strength of all the spectral bands of Al@LNMO is smaller than those of LNMO pristine material, implying that the incorporation of Al3+ has effectively reduced the overall valence state of LNMO. Energy band calculations demonstrate that the band gap of Al@LNMO (0.0018 eV) is considerably less than that of LNMO (0.5601 eV), indicating that Al doping can significantly improve the conductivity of LNMO. Structural Characterization by XRD and FT-IR illustrates that the crystal structure of the synthesized Al@LNMO is Fd-3m. SEM results show that the morphology of the synthesized Al@LNMO sample is octahedral. In addition, electrochemical cycling tests exhibit that the capacity retention of Al@LNMO after 100 cycles is 82.9% and 79.1% tested at 25 °C and 50 °C, respectively. The capacity retention at 50 °C is similar to that at 25 ℃, which suggests that Al@LNMO has appreciable high-temperature stability. Moreover, the Warburg impedance of Al@LNMO is found small demonstrated by CV test, indicating that Al doping can improve the conductivity of LNMO, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations. © 2023, The Authors. ABSTRACTABSTRACTTerrestrial gamma radiation dose (TGRD) rates were measuredin situfrom different locations in Katsina State, Nigeria, using a portable radiation survey metre based on geological formations and soil types. The measured TGRD rates ranged from 45 to 271 nGyh–1with an average value of 116 ± 1 nGyh–1. Geological formation (silicified sheared rock) and soil type (lithosols and ferruginous crusts and ferruginous tropical soils) appeared to have the highest mean TGRD values of 163 and 134 nGyh–1with sandstone geological formation and alluvial and hydromorphic soils having the lowest TGRD with values of 80 and 61 nGyh–1, respectively. One way ANOVA results shows that the tested null hypothesis was rejected. Thus, indicating that there exists a strong relationship between the various geological formations, soil types with the measured TGRD values based on the alternate hypothesis. Human health hazard indices like annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE), lifetime outdoor annual equivalent dose, and relative excess lifetime outdoor cancer risk associated with the mean TGRD of the study area were also calculated and found to be 0.711, 9.955 mSv, and 5.79 × 10–4, respectively. These values were higher than the world average values but favourable compared with the safety limits recommended by ICRP.
