Chain-type wireless sensor network node scheduling strategy

In order to reduce power consumption of sensor nodes and extend network survival time in the wireless sensor network （WSN）, sensor nodes are scheduled in an active or dormant mode. A chain-type WSN is fundamental y different from other types of WSNs, in which the sensor nodes are deployed along elongated geographic areas and form a chain-type network topo-logy structure. This paper investigates the node scheduling prob-lem in the chain-type WSN. Firstly, a node dormant scheduling mode is analyzed theoretical y from geographic coverage, and then three neighboring nodes scheduling criteria are proposed. Sec-ondly, a hybrid coverage scheduling algorithm and dead areas are presented. Final y, node scheduling in mine tunnel WSN with uniform deployment （UD）, non-uniform deployment （NUD） and op-timal distribution point spacing （ODS） is simulated. The results show that the node scheduling with UD and NUD, especial y NUD, can effectively extend the network survival time. Therefore, a strat-egy of adding a few mobile nodes which activate the network in dead areas is proposed, which can further extend the network survival time by balancing the energy consumption of nodes.

Minimum detectable activity for NaI(Tl) airborne γ-ray spectrometry based on Monte Carlo simulation

The determination of the effective minimum detectable activity （MDA） of radionuclides by a detection system plays an im- portant role in environmental radiation monitoring. In this study, the responses of an NaI（TI） airborne γ ray spectrometry （AGRS） system to different radionuclides （137Cs and 131I） were investigated using the Monte Carlo technique. The MDA values were determined under different conditions according to the counting spectra obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation. The equivalent mass thickness method was applied to the Monte Carlo modeling for monitoring ground radiation to reduce sta- tistical uncertainty. The secondary source method was used to monitor both air and ground radiation. A quadratic relationship was found between the MDA and activity concentration. An exponential relationship was found between the MDA and altitude The MDA of a specific radionuclide from external detectors was found to be superior to that obtained from internal detectors under the same conditions. The MDA values in an NaI（Tl） AGRS system under different conditions can be estimated based on the results of this study.

Forecasting in-core power distributions in nuclear power plants via a spatial–temporal hierarchical-directed network

As nuclear power plants (NPPs) undertake more peak regulation tasks to handle high new energy penetration and overcapacity, precise forecasting of in-core power distributions is essential for optimal control and safe operation. However, current works lack an effective strategy for predicting high-resolution power distributions and neglect in-core spatial correlations. This study proposes a spatial–temporal hierarchical-directed network (ST-HDN) for forecasting power distributions, whose prediction strategy is guided by the physical model. To characterize spatial correlations and causal relationships among physical quantities, the hierarchical-directed graph is designed and combined with neutron and power signals for input to the ST-HDN. Concretely, the ST-HDN integrates three sub-modules: a temporal-differencing layer to enhance representation of subtle variations;a multi-dilated convolutional network to extract dynamic temporal features;and a graph convolutional network to propagate spatial adjacent information, further predicting power nodes at various positions. The predicted power nodes are post-processed to derive future power distributions. Experiments on two peak regulation scenarios from a real-world NPP illustrate that the ST-HDN outperforms various state-of-the-art methods in 10-, 20-, and 30-min ahead forecasting. © 2025

Mapping of the lunar surface by average atomic number based on positron annihilation radiation from Chang'e-1

A map of the average atomic number of lunar rock and soil can be used to differentiate lithology and soil type on the lunar *** paper establishes a linear relationship between the average atomic number of lunar rock or soil and the flux of position annihilation radiation(0.512-Me V gamma-ray) from the lunar *** relationship is confirmed by Monte Carlo simulation with data from lunar rock or soil samples collected by Luna(Russia) and Apollo(USA) missions.A map of the average atomic number of the lunar rock and soil on the lunar surface has been derived from the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer data collected by Chang'e-1,an unmanned Chinese lunar-orbiting *** the map,the higher average atomic numbers(ZA > 12.5),which are related to different types of basalt,are in the maria region;the highest ZA(13.2) readings are associated with Sinus *** middle ZA(~12.1) regions,in the shape of irregular oval rings,are in West Oceanus Procellarum and Mare Frigoris,which seems to be consistent with the distribution of potassium,rare earth elements,and phosphorus as a unique feature on the lunar *** lower average atomic numbers(ZA < 11.5)are found to be correlated with the anorthosite on the far side of the Moon.

This paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of three molten salt Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) tower plants located in the regions of Mechria, Adrar, and Tindouf in Algeria. The study evaluates the thermal efficiency, economic feasibility, and performance of these CSP using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, which accurately models Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), a critical factor influencing plant performance. Key parameters analyzed include Solar Multiple (SM), Thermal energy storage (TES) hours, capacity factor (CF), and the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). The results demonstrate that an optimal heliostat field configuration with a SM of 1.8 and 10 h of TES achieves a capacity factor of 51.49%, with a minimum LCOE of 0.097 $/kWh. In Mechria, with operational and maintenance costs projected at 2.51 million dollars. For the Adrar region, a SM of 1.6 and TES of 2 h yield an LCOE of 0.18 $/kWh at a capacity factor of 24.03%. Similarly, in Tindouf, a SM of 1.6 and TES of 8 h result in a capacity factor of 18.95% and an LCOE of 0.17 $/kWh. The analysis reveals that the design of CSP systems, particularly the combination of solar Multiple and TES, plays a pivotal role in optimizing the economic performance of the plants, This approach enables researchers to save time and costs by using satellite-derived DNI estimations, enhancing data accuracy and optimizing CSP deployment. © The Author(s) 2025.

Trapezoidal pulse shaping for pile-up pulse identification in X-ray spectrometry

Energy resolution is affected by the intrinsic energy resolution of the detector, ballistic deficit, pileup pulses and noise. Pile-up pulses become the dominant factor that degrades energy resolution after the system is established, so pile-up rejection is often applied to obtain good energy resolution by discarding pulses that are expected to be contaminated by pile-up. However, pile-up rejection can reduce count rates and thus lower the measurement precision. In order to improve count rates and maintain energy resolution, a new method of pile-up pulse identification based on trapezoidal pulse shaping is presented. Combined with pulse width discrimination, this method is implemented by recording pulses that are not seriously piled up. Some experimental tests with a Cu-Pb alloy sample are carried out to verify the performance of this method in X-ray spectrometry. The results show that the method can significantly improve count rates without degrading energy resolution.

Macro and micro delamination detection in adhesive structures: A synthesized linear and nonlinear air-coupled ultrasonic technique

Adhesive structures are widely used in industries. During manufacturing and operation, both macro and micro delamination between different materials or layers may occur within these structures. Despite the practical use of air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACUT) techniques for detecting such delamination, the interaction mechanisms between elastic waves generated by air-coupled transducers and these two types of delamination have not yet been fully understood. Additionally, there is a lack of accurate identification methods for either macro or micro delamination. To address these issues, this study proposes a synthesized linear and nonlinear ACUT approach for detecting and identifying both types of delamination in adhesive structures. Using finite element simulations with a coupled ACUT model, the study thoroughly examines the interaction between ACUT-induced elastic waves and the delamination types. The results show that macro delamination causes wave reflection and transmission, while micro delamination leads to contact acoustic nonlinearity. The proposed method is validated through experiments and shown to be effective for detecting and identifying both types of delamination. The results of the study contribute to the advancement of ACUT theory and applications, elucidate complex wave features and pave the way for more sophisticated non-destructive evaluation techniques. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

ReScConv-xLSTM: An improved xLSTM model with spatiotemporal feature extraction capability for remaining useful life prediction of Aero-engine

Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction is crucial for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) of aircraft engines. Although deep learning models based on LSTM and Transformer have achieved significant results in this field, these models typically only extract temporal features, neglecting spatial features, and struggle with parallel computation, leading to a bottleneck in RUL prediction performance. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved ReScConv-xLSTM model that integrates the characteristics of xLSTM, ScConv, and residual structures. Firstly, the model converts one-dimensional signals from multiple sensors into multi-channel two-dimensional wavelet time-frequency images through time window processing, RobustScaler normalization, and the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) method, enhancing the spatiotemporal features of the data and achieving data augmentation and noise reduction. Subsequently, these spatiotemporal features are input into the ReScConv-xLSTM model for training to learn the spatiotemporal dependencies of the data, thereby obtaining accurate RUL predictions. Experiments on the C-MAPSS and N-CMAPSS datasets of aircraft turbofan engines demonstrate that the model can accurately predict RUL values, exhibiting strong accuracy, generalization capability, and practical application potential, with the average RMSE reduced to 2.07 and the average Score value reduced to 36.42.
