This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

This paper reports on the theory, design, and implementation of an artistic computer colleague that improvises and collaborates with human users in real-time. Our system, Drawing Apprentice, is based on existing theories of art, creative cognition, and collaboration synthesized into an enactive model of creativity. The implementation details of the Drawing Apprentice are provided along with early collaborative artwork created with the system. We present the enactive model of creativity as a potential theoretical framework for designing creative systems involving continuous improvisational collaboration between a human and computer. The architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) industry and, specifically, the facility management domain are searching for new methods for increasing maintenance efficiency and productivity where critical decisions are constantly made to maintain the facility. New digital technologies are capable of enhancing this decision-making process by providing better means of accessing required information. In this research, BIM - together with mobile Augmented Reality (AR) - has been used for developing a system to access building information in facilities. AR has been considered as a viable option to replace the current approach of locating facility components using paper-based corrective/preventive maintenance work orders. The AR method was also assumed to reduce inefficiencies of data overload by providing facility managers with a BIM-based tool for visualizing their "real-world" environment with added interactive data. The hypothesis of this research is that bringing 3D BIM models of building components into an AR environment and making them accessible through handheld mobile devices would help the facility managers to locate those components easier and faster compared to facility managers' current approach of paper-based preventive/corrective maintenance work orders. A within-subjects user participation experiment and analysis was conducted to evaluate this hypothesis. The outcome of statistical analysis revealed that mobile AR-based environment would significantly enhance locating the right object in the facility in terms of the required time and number of errors. Although there were drift and registration problems while conducting the experiment, participants significantly preferred the AR condition to the paper one. © ASCE 2014.

This paper presents an approach to leverage decision models and machine learning to assist designers facing a decision challenge to automatically recall relevant information from prior decisions. We specify a graph-based collaborative decision-making model based on the Choosing by Advantages (CBA) methodology that unifies elements of rationale involved in the decision making process (e.g., team members, objectives, alternatives, attributes, advantages, importance) and the relationships among them in a format suitable for machine inference methods. We adapt the Belief Propagation (BP) graph-based inference method to analyze existing corpus of decision rationale to inform collaborative decision-making. We illustrate the CBA-BP algorithm with an explanatory example, describe initial implementation, and outline future work in populating databases of decision models, implementing the algorithm and associated user interfaces, and validating the efficiency and effectiveness of the algorithm and interfaces through user-centered testing.

We are interested in the usability of haptic hand gestures in emotional online communication. To investigate how different emotions are associated with different tactile hand gestures, we built a tactile user interface device to record parameters of hand gestures exerted on it such as the hand gesture intensity, temporal frequency, spatial frequency and pattern correlation to be used as the source of information to access emotions. We observed the behavioral aspects of tactile hand gestures used for emotional interaction through the sensory input device and analyzed the data using a model-based analysis tool. The obtained gestures are categorized into the groups defined by the tactile signal parameters. Based on the findings of this research, we show a possibility that the tactile hand gesture-To-emotion map can be used to enable affective on-line communication. We are applying the relationships between tactile hand gestures and emotions to emotional online communication devices. Copyright 2011 ACM.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). Significant deficits in the children with ASD include lack of social communication skills and cognitive dysfunction. There is currently no cure for autism;however, with appropriate aid, autistic children could learn progressively and maintain a good quality of life with their disorder. Therefore, the market demands Information and Computer Technology (ICT) applications to facilitate children dealing with ASD in their lifetime. Although many ICT designs have been developed and used already in early intervention and treatment, they are not common in long-term training for the children with ASD. The proposed work here presents a novel design prototype, Facial Expression Wonderland (FEW), to train the children with ASD based on the progressive levels of training under a given background context. This prototype is designed to improve the ability of the ASD children in facial expression recognition. This work also discusses how ICT can facilitate the life further for these youngsters with ASD. © 2010 ACM.

In this paper, we present HealthQuest, a mixed-reality system to motivate employees' physical activity in their workplace. By taking a few extra minutes for their usual walk to the coffee machine or trip to the restroom, employees achieve the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity per day.

To offset sedentary lifestyles, physical activity is widely promoted in the workplace. In this paper, we present HealthQuest, a mixed reality system to motivate employees' physical activity. HealthQuest leverages a company facility's existing physical infrastructure augmented with distributed kiosks. Users engage in wellness learning quests by walking from kiosk to kiosk in the environment. The system assists in achieving company health promotion goals. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
