This study presents a computational methodology for developing a multi-ball system that automatically aligns during assembly processes. The contributions of this work are threefold: Firstly, a comprehensive error analysis of the multi-ball system is conducted. It is found that temperature- and pressure-induced deformations cannot be ignored when micrometer-level precision is required. Secondly, a novel process flow for designing the multi-ball pitch artifact is introduced, which enables optimization-based decision-making. Lastly, an error compensation method, including thermal compensation and elastic deformation compensation, is presented to ensure that the accuracy of pitch artifacts mainly depends on the manufacturing accuracy. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

RFWNet: A Lightweight Remote Sensing Object Detector Integrating Multi-Scale Receptive Fields and Foreground Focus Mechanism

Challenges in remote sensing object detection (RSOD), such as high inter-class similarity, imbalanced foreground-background distribution, and the small size of objects in remote sensing images significantly hinder detection accuracy. Moreover, the trade-off between model accuracy and computational complexity poses additional constraints on the application of RSOD algorithms. To address these issues, this study proposes an efficient and lightweight RSOD algorithm integrating multi-scale receptive fields and foreground focus mechanism, named RFWNet. Specifically, we proposed a lightweight backbone network Receptive Field Adaptive Selection Network (RFASNet), leveraging the rich context information of remote sensing images to enhance class separability. Additionally, we developed a Foreground Background Separation Module (FBSM) consisting of a background redundant information filtering module and a foreground information enhancement module to emphasize critical regions within images while filtering redundant background information. Finally, we designed a loss function, the Weighted CIoU-Wasserstein (WCW) loss, which weights the IoU-based loss by using the Normalized Wasserstein Distance to mitigate model sensitivity to small object position deviations. Experimental evaluations on the DOTA V1.0 and NWPU VHR-10 datasets demonstrate that RFWNet achieves advanced performance with 6.0M parameters and can achieves 52 FPS. © 2025, CC BY.

NSPG-Miner: Mining Repetitive Negative Sequential Patterns

Sequential pattern mining (SPM) with gap constraints (or repetitive SPM or tandem repeat discovery in bioinformatics) can find frequent repetitive subsequences satisfying gap constraints, which are called positive sequential patterns with gap constraints (PSPGs). However, classical SPM with gap constraints cannot find the frequent missing items in the PSPGs. To tackle this issue, this paper explores negative sequential patterns with gap constraints (NSPGs). We propose an efficient NSPG-Miner algorithm that can mine both frequent PSPGs and NSPGs simultaneously. To effectively reduce candidate patterns, we propose a pattern join strategy with negative patterns which can generate both positive and negative candidate patterns at the same time. To calculate the support (frequency of occurrence) of a pattern in each sequence, we explore a NegPair algorithm that employs a key-value pair array structure to deal with the gap constraints and the negative items simultaneously and can avoid redundant rescanning of the original sequence, thus improving the efficiency of the algorithm. To report the performance of NSPG-Miner, 11 competitive algorithms and 11 datasets are employed. The experimental results not only validate the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by NSPG-Miner, but also verify that NSPG-Miner can discover more valuable information than the state-ofthe-art algorithms. In the domain of Multimodal Relation Extraction (MRE), we present the $\color{Red}{\text{W}}$atcher-$\color{Red}{\text{M}}$ediated $\color{Red}{\text{A}}$ttention $\color{Red}{\text{J}}$oint $\color{Red}{\text{L}}$earning Model ($\color{Red}{\text{WMAJL}}$), a novel approach addressing the challenges of modality alignment noise, cross-modal fusion disparity, preservation of textual relative position information, and the distinctiveness of classification labels. WMAJL employs an integrative framework leveraging contrastive learning and variational autoencoder constraints to mitigate modality alignment noise by prioritizing relevant semantic data and effectively reducing extraneous noise that does not contribute to the task. The model’s innovative architecture includes a mediator watcher, which facilitates enhanced cross-modal fusion by enabling nuanced information exchange between textual and visual modalities while preserving the unique characteristics of each modality. Additionally, the design of auxiliary tasks, such as Named Entity Recognition (NER), and output supervision constructs loss functions that preserve relative position information, ensuring a precise depiction of entity relationships throughout the multilayer encoding processes. A key differentiator of WMAJL is its label-centric self-information loss technique, inspired by InfoNCE, which trains the model to cluster similar relation labels in semantically coherent areas, thereby optimizing classification label uniqueness by discerning subtle differences among relation types. The synergistic application of these strategies has led to a significant enhancement of WMAJL’s performance, as evidenced by its state-of-the-art F1 score of $\color{Red}{84.93\%}$ on the MNRE dataset. This achievement surpasses existing benchmarks and sets a new standard for multimodal knowledge extraction, underscoring WMAJL’s potential to revolutionize the MRE landscape.

The metaverse is undergoing repaid evolution with metaverse services emerging as a significant focal point of research across virtual reality, augmented reality, and metaverse social networking. However, a key challenge lies in the scarcity of datasets that accurately represent metaverse services, impeding the advancement of metaverse service technologies and applications. To address this challenge, we have categorized metaverse services into virtual scene services and meta-services. Subsequently, we introduced a metaverse service dataset called "VMeta". VMeta encompasses comprehensive information about virtual scene services and meta-services, including essential QoS (Quality of Service) data. This dataset serves as a valuable resource for researchers exploring various aspects of metaverse services, with the ultimate goal of enhancing user satisfaction in the metaverse. We have conducted evaluations and tests on VMeta to optimize metaverse QoS. The results demonstrate its substantial value for metaverse service research. ExpertDRL: Request Dispatching and Instance Configuration for Serverless Edge Inference with Foundation Models

The prevalence of the pre-training & fine-tuning paradigm enables machine learning models to quickly adapt to various downstream tasks by fine-tuning pre-trained foundation models (FMs), greatly facilitating various IoT applications that rely on model inference in dynamic edge serverless environments. Efficiently dispatching inference requests and configuring instances to batch inference requests can significantly enhance resource efficiency. However, existing serverless inference solutions are tailored for traditional models, make coarse-grained request dispatching and instance configuration decisions, fail to exploit the shared model backbone characteristics of the FM and capture delayed rewards in dynamic environments, and ignore communication latency between edge sites, resulting in high costs and constraint violations. In this paper, we leverage our insight that fine-grained batch inference requests can effectively exploit the shared model backbone feature of FM to save monetary costs. We propose an algorithm that incorporates deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and expert intervention for fine-grained request dispatching and instance configuration, where the DRL component outputs fractional solutions as guidance, while the expert intervention module integrates our insights—batching reduces monetary costs at the expense of increased inference latency, whereas higher configurations shorten inference latency. This module rounds fractional solutions and adjusts instance configurations to search for optimal solutions while satisfying constraints, with theoretical guarantees rigorously proved. Finally, we conducted our experiments on an OpenFaas-based platform and simulator, and extensive trace-driven evaluation results show that ExpertDRL can save costs by up to 85.14% and improve request acceptance ratio by up to 26.93%, compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

With the rapid development of document digitization, people have become accustomed to capturing and processing documents using electronic devices such as smartphones. However, the captured document images often suffer from issues like shadows and noise due to environmental factors, which can affect their readability. To improve the quality of captured document images, researchers have proposed a series of models or frameworks and applied them in distinct scenarios such as image enhancement, and document information extraction. In this paper, we primarily focus on shadow removal methods and open-source datasets. We concentrate on recent advancements in this area, first organizing and analyzing nine available datasets. Then, the methods are categorized into conventional methods and neural network-based methods. Conventional methods use manually designed features and include shadow map-based approaches and illumination-based approaches. Neural network-based methods automatically generate features from data and are divided into single-stage approaches and multi-stage approaches. We detail representative algorithms and briefly describe some typical techniques. Finally, we analyze and discuss experimental results, identifying the limitations of datasets and methods. Future research directions are discussed, and nine suggestions for shadow removal from document images are proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first survey of shadow removal methods and related datasets from document images.

ABFS: Natural Robustness Testing for LLM-based NLP software

Owing to the exceptional performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, LLM-based NLP software has rapidly gained traction across various domains, such as financial analysis and content moderation. However, these applications frequently exhibit robustness deficiencies, where slight perturbations in input (prompt+example) may lead to erroneous outputs. Current robustness testing methods face two main limitations: (1) low testing effectiveness, limiting the applicability of LLM-based software in safety-critical scenarios, and (2) insufficient naturalness of test cases, reducing the practical value of testing outcomes. To address these issues, this paper proposes ABFS, a straightforward yet effective automated testing method that, for the first time, treats the input prompts and examples as a unified whole for robustness testing. Specifically, ABFS formulates the testing process as a combinatorial optimization problem, employing Best-First Search to identify successful test cases within the perturbation space and designing a novel Adaptive control strategy to enhance test case naturalness. We evaluate the robustness testing performance of ABFS on three datasets across five threat models. On Llama2-13b, the traditional StressTest achieves only a 13.273% success rate, while ABFS attains a success rate of 98.064%, supporting a more comprehensive robustness assessment before software deployment. Compared to baseline methods, ABFS introduces fewer modifications to the original input and consistently generates test cases with superior naturalness. Furthermore, test cases generated by ABFS exhibit stronger transferability and higher testing efficiency, significantly reducing testing costs. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Semantic segmentation of remote sensing images (RSIs) is essential for applications such as environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and their variants struggle to capture comprehensive spectral context for learning discriminative representations. In this paper, we propose a Spectrum-Enhanced Network (SPENet) that leverages the Frequency Transformer Block (FTB) to capture rich spectral context. FTB integrates Spectrum-Enhanced Attention (SEA) with Multi-Head Frequency Self-Attention (MH-FSA), incorporating more informative contextual cues. Specifically, SEA aggregates spectral statistics through covariance matrix normalization before applying channel-wise attention. By projecting feature maps onto the frequency domain, MH-FSA provides the network with a broader context, extending beyond the low-frequency focus of standard self-attention mechanisms. Extensive experiments on the ISPRS Potsdam and LoveDA datasets show that SPENet significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Besides, the proposed SEA module notably rises average F1-score/overall accuracy/mean insert over union wiht more than 2.5/2.6%/2.3%, as demonstrated by ablation study.

Multivariate Time Series(MTS)forecasting is an essential problem in many *** forecasting results can effectively help in making *** date,many MTS forecasting methods have been proposed and widely ***,these methods assume that the predicted value of a single variable is affected by all other variables,ignoring the causal relationship among *** address the above issue,we propose a novel end-to-end deep learning model,termed graph neural network with neural Granger causality,namely CauGNN,in this *** characterize the causal information among variables,we introduce the neural Granger causality graph in our *** variable is regarded as a graph node,and each edge represents the casual relationship between *** addition,convolutional neural network filters with different perception scales are used for time series feature extraction,to generate the feature of each ***,the graph neural network is adopted to tackle the forecasting problem of the graph structure generated by the *** benchmark datasets from the real world are used to evaluate the proposed CauGNN,and comprehensive experiments show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results in the MTS forecasting task.
