This paper is about a vision-based system that automatically monitors intermodal freight trains for the quality of how the loads (containers) are placed along the train. An accurate and robust algorithm to segment the foreground of containers in videos of the moving train is indispensable for this purpose. Given a video of a moving train consisting of containers of different types, this paper presents a method exploiting the information in both frequency and spatial domains to segment these containers. This method can accurately segment all types of containers under a variety of background conditions, e.g illumination variations and moving clouds, in the train videos shot by a fixed camera. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are substantiated through a large number of experiments on real data of train videos.

In order to implement vehicle license plate (VLP) location at complex environment, a VLP fusion location method with object authenticity confirmation is presented. In this way, there are four steps. First, HSV color space feature is studied and every region connected with object color is marked in one gray-level image according to multi-gray-level for multi-style. Second, gray-level vertical edge of absolute accumulation differential image (AADI) is extracted. Third, each kind of possible object region is detected by fusion feature respectively. Last, object authenticity confirmation method based on companion and compensation is designed to throw off the false-alarm and improve the location accuracy. Various actual RGB color VLP images are used to test the proposed method. The method is suitable for multi-object and multi-style location at complex environment. The experimental results proved its effectiveness.

This paper introduced a novel high performance algorithm and VLSI architectures for achieving bit plane coding (BPC) in word level sequential and parallel mode. The proposed BPC algorithm adopts the techniques of coding pass prediction and parallel & pipeline to reduce the number of accessing memory and to increase the ability of concurrently processing of the system, where all the coefficient bits of a code block could be coded by only one scan. A new parallel bit plane architecture (PA) was proposed to achieve word-level sequential coding. Moreover, an efficient high-speed architecture (HA) was presented to achieve multi-word parallel coding. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed PA could reduce the hardware cost more efficiently, though the throughput retains one coefficient coded per clock. While the proposed HA could perform coding for 4 coefficients belonging to a stripe column at one intra-clock cycle, so that coding for an NxN code-block could be completed in approximate N2/4 intra-clock cycles. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed designs have high throughput rate with good performance in terms of speedup to cost, which can be good alternatives for low power applications.

A single-mode background model based on blob analysis is proposed to segment foreground from image sequences in complex environment. Firstly, the symmetric difference is used to extract a rough moving object. Secondly, blob analysis is utilized to update background model .Finally, classification strategy (block-level and frame-level) is used to extract foreground accurately and avoid the affect of noise and illumination variance. Experimental results show that the presented approach works well in the presence of complex environment and illumination variance.

In this paper, quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC- LDPC) codes are applied to a novel rate-compatible (RC) scheme for multimedia transmission. To ensure that the RC codes over the entire range of rates can be decoded by a single decoder, modified array codes in a lower triangular form are employed as the mother codes. The constructed rate-compatible QC-LDPC codes based on our novel RC- scheme can also be encoded by a single encoder. Hardware design of QC-LDPC encoder for this RC-scheme is proposed in detail. The hardware complexity is determined by the lowest-rate code for serial encoding and by the mother code for parallel encoding. Part of hardware units is disabled in certain cases to reduce power consumption.

In order to segment cells images accurately and efficiently we combine the model proposed by Tony F. Chan with Gabor filter. The model proposed by Tony F. Chan can detect very weak boundary based on function energy instead of the gradient. Gabor filter can enhance the cells boundaries in different angle and denoise the image. In the experiments, we firstly use Gabor filter to enhance the image with different angle, and then fuse the enhanced images to get better images. At last we use the active contour model to the fused image. The result shows the model we proposed is better than the model which dose not use Gabor filter.
