Osteoarthritis is a chronic and crippling disease affecting an increasing number of people each year. With no known cure, it is expected to reach epidemic proportions in the near future. Accurate segmentation of knee cartilage from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans facilitates the measurement of cartilage volume present in a patient's knee, thus enabling medical clinicians to detect the onset of osteoarthritis and also crucially, to study its effects. This paper compares four model-based segmentation methods popular for medical data segmentation, namely Active Shape Models (ASM) (Cootes et al., 1995), Active Appearance Models (AAM) (Cootes et al., 2001), Patch-based Active Appearance Models (PAAM) (Faggian et al., 2006), and Active Feature Models (AFM) (Langs et al., 2006). A comprehensive analysis of how accurately these methods segment human tibial cartilage is presented. The results obtained were benchmarked against the current "gold standard" (cartilage segmented manually by trained clinicians) and indicate that modeling local texture features around each landmark provides the best results for segmenting human tibial cartilage.

ServiceBSP model is presented as an extension of BSP model with a view to the advantages of BSP model in grid environment where large-scale and geographically distributed resources (abstracted as services) are available. In this paper, we advocate a preferable service broker framework to support the services selection policy that could optimize the services selection for ServiceBSP model. It means that the services selection can increase the level of satisfaction measured by overall quality value and decrease execution time by considering services dependent relation and location in a subtask group. Meanwhile, the policy is preliminary work ensuring reasonable distribution of services and loading balance in ServiceBSP model. In an addition, we give a detailed process of services selection based on heuristic greedy algorithm. Finally, by comparing response time and price using proposed policy with other policy only considering QoS, the experimental simulation shows that our services selection policy possesses superior performance on response time and then provides satisfactory result for users.

This paper introduces a new class of switching vector median filter. The proposed algorithm first uses four directional masks to analyze the color difference between the central pixel and its neighborhood pixels in the RGB color space and classify each color pixel into noisy pixel or noise-free one, and then employs the standard vector median filtering operations in the detected noisy locations to restore the corrupted pixels and leave the noise-free ones unchanged. The simulation results show that the proposed method excellently suppresses impulsive noise as well as preserving the image details well, and significantly outperforms the existing vector filtering solutions in terms of both the objective measures and the perceptual visual quality.

In this paper, we propose a new image codec, which called embedded zerotree wavelet coefficients envelop coding (EZWCEC). The coefficients envelop is characterized by describing the global tendency of the significant wavelet coefficients. Based on the empirical analysis and experimental results, our EZWCEC algorithm restores the trend of the significant wavelet coefficients and estimates the magnitude of some insignificant coefficients on the decoder. Unlike other zerotree coding algorithms such as Said and Pearlman's SPIHT using three lists, EZWCEC only uses two lists during encoding and decoding. So the memory requirement for the hardware implementation is reduced significantly. Although PSNR values for EZWCEC are lower than SPIHT's and JPEG2000's, our experiment results have shown that EZWCEC can dramatically improve the visual quality of reconstructed at low bit rates (e.g., below 0.1bpp).

A novel parallel-based lifting scheme (PLS) for the (6, 10) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its optimal 1-D architecture were presented. The proposed PLS achieves parallel computation of multiplication operations used in all lifting steps, which leads to shortening the critical path efficiently. An equal formulation for forward and inverse DWT could be obtained using the PLS, providing an efficient reconfigurable architecture for them. Retiming technique was employed to further optimize design of 1-D architecture, which saved considerably the hardware resources under the tight critical path. The Verilog HDL model for the design is synthesized into Altera's FPGA device EP1S25F1020C6. Synthesis results show that, the critical path, the occupied logic cell and flip-flops for the proposed architecture are respectively reduced by about 14.2%, 7.8% and 12.5% compared with the similar work, which efficiently increases working frequency and reduces hardware cost of device. The presented approach could be generalized to the optimal design of architecture for other wavelet filters.
