Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual labeling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise Label Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

GEM: Context-Aware Gaze EstiMation with Visual Search Behavior Matching for Chest Radiograph

Gaze estimation is pivotal in human scene comprehension tasks, particularly in medical diagnostic analysis. Eye-tracking technology facilitates the recording of physicians’ ocular movements during image interpretation, thereby elucidating their visual attention patterns and information-processing strategies. In this paper, we initially define the context-aware gaze estimation problem in medical radiology report settings. To understand the attention allocation and cognitive behavior of radiologists during the medical image interpretation process, we propose a context-aware Gaze EstiMation (GEM) network that utilizes eye gaze data collected from radiologists to simulate their visual search behavior patterns throughout the image interpretation process. It consists of a context-awareness module, visual behavior graph construction, and visual behavior matching. Within the context-awareness module, we achieve intricate multimodal registration by establishing connections between medical reports and images. Subsequently, for a more accurate simulation of genuine visual search behavior patterns, we introduce a visual behavior graph structure, capturing such behavior through high-order relationships (edges) between gaze points (nodes). To maintain the authenticity of visual behavior, we devise a visual behavior-matching approach, adjusting the high-order relationships between them by matching the graph constructed from real and estimated gaze points. Extensive experiments on four publicly available datasets demonstrate the superiority of GEM over existing methods and its strong generalizability, which also provides a new direction for the effective utilization of diverse modalities in medical image interpretation and enhances the interpretability of models in the field of medical imaging. https://***/Tiger-SN/GEM. Diabetic retinopathy (DR), with its large patient population, has become a formidable threat to human visual health. In the clinical diagnosis of DR, multi-view fundus images are considered to be more suitable for DR diagnosis because of the wide coverage of the field of view. Therefore, different from the previous single-view DR grading methods, we design a dynamic selection-driven multi-view DR grading method to fit clinical scenarios better. Since lesion information plays a key role in DR diagnosis, previous methods usually boost the model performance by enhancing the lesion feature. However, during the actual diagnosis, ophthalmologists not only focus on the crucial parts, but also exclude irrelevant features to ensure the accuracy of judgment. To this end, we introduce the idea of dynamic selection and design a series of selection mechanisms from fine granularity to coarse granularity. In this work, we first introduce an Ophthalmic image Reader (OIR) agent to provide the model with pixel-level prompts of suspected lesion areas. Moreover, we design a Multi-View Token Selection Module (MVTSM) that prunes redundant feature tokens and dynamically selects key information. In the final decision stage, we dynamically fuse multi-view features through the novel Multi-View Mixture of Experts Module (MVMoEM), to enhance key views and reduce the impact of conflicting views. Extensive experiments on a large multi-view fundus image dataset with 34,452 images prove that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art models. Multimodal emotion recognition plays a pivotal role in the advancement of natural human-computer interaction systems. Recent studies have attempted to apply multi-task learning to emotion recognition. However, the multi-task shared feature extractor of traditional methods needs to integrate the feature representations of different tasks, which may lead to the feature extractor failing to focus on the learning of emotion representations. To address this problem, we propose a hybrid multi-task learning framework for end-to-end multimodal emotion recognition, in which the primary task is emotion classification, and the auxiliary tasks are emotion regression and gender classification. This framework consists of two networks specialized in gender and emotion recognition, where the latter transfers knowledge from the former through our proposed Deep Aggregation LSTM (DA-LSTM). The DA-LSTM could more precisely capture emotional information in discourse by aggregating emotion and gender feature extractors. Experimental results on a commonly used dataset IEMOCAP demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

AdaSemiCD: An Adaptive Semi-supervised Change Detection Method Based on Pseudo Label Evaluation

Change detection(CD) is an essential field in remote sensing, with a primary focus on identifying areas of change in bitemporal image pairs captured at varying intervals of the same region. The data annotation process for CD tasks is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. To better utilize the scarce labeled data and abundant unlabeled data, we introduce an adaptive semi-supervised learning method, AdaSemiCD, to improve pseudo-label usage and optimize the training process. Initially, due to the extreme class imbalance inherent in CD, the model is more inclined to focus on the background class, and it is easy to confuse the boundary of the target object. Considering these two points, we develop a measurable evaluation metric for pseudo-labels that enhances the representation of information entropy by class rebalancing and amplification of ambiguous areas, assigning greater weights to prospective change objects. Subsequently, to enhance the reliability of samplewise pseudo-labels, we introduce the AdaFusion module, to dynamically identifying the most uncertain region and substituting it with more trustworthy content. Lastly, to ensure better training stability, we introduce the AdaEMA module, which updates the teacher model using only batches of trusted samples. Recently, medical image compression becomes essential to effectively handle large amounts of medical data for storage and communication purposes. Vector quantization (VQ) is a popular image compression technique, and the commonly used VQ model is Linde–Buzo–Gray (LBG) that constructs a local optimal codebook to compress images. The codebook construction was considered as an optimization problem, and a bioinspired algorithm was employed to solve it. This article proposed a VQ codebook construction approach called the L2-LBG method utilizing the Lion optimization algorithm (LOA) and Lempel Ziv Markov chain Algorithm (LZMA). Once LOA constructed the codebook, LZMA was applied to compress the index table and further increase the compression performance of the LOA. A set of experimentation has been carried out using the benchmark medical images, and a comparative analysis was conducted with Cuckoo Search-based LBG (CS-LBG), Firefly-based LBG (FF-LBG) and JPEG2000. The compression efficiency of the presented model was validated in terms of compression ratio (CR), compression factor (CF), bit rate, and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). The proposed L2-LBG method obtained a higher CR of 0.3425375 and PSNR value of 52.62459 compared to CS-LBG, FA-LBG, and JPEG2000 methods. The experimental values revealed that the L2-LBG process yielded effective compression performance with a better-quality reconstructed image. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

This study improves a classifier of the support vector machine (SVM) by optimizing its parameters by adjusting cockroach swarm optimization (CSO). Classification system design includes data inputs, pre-process, and classification. The relief technique selects the feature subset, and the kernel parameters used as input for the system. The feature selection and classification of data sets were figured out by the combination of ICSO and SVM with its optimized parameters synchronous. Simulation results of the proposed scheme are compared with other systems, e.g., GA-SVM, PSO-SVM, and CSO-SVM, which show that the proposed project can achieve better classification accuracy than the different algorithms. BAND-2k: Banding Artifact Noticeable Database for Banding Detection and Quality Assessment

Banding, also known as staircase-like contours, frequently occurs in flat areas of images/videos processed by the compression or quantization algorithms. As undesirable artifacts, banding destroys the original image structure, thus inevitably degrading users’ quality of experience (QoE). In this paper, we systematically investigate the banding image quality assessment (IQA) problem, aiming to detect the image banding artifacts and evaluate their perceptual visual quality. Considering that the existing image banding databases only contain limited content sources and banding generation methods, and lack perceptual quality labels (i.e. mean opinion scores), we first build the largest banding IQA database so far, named Banding Artifact Noticeable Database (BAND-2k), which consists of 2,000 banding images generated by 15 compression and quantization schemes. A total of 23 workers participated in the subjective IQA experiment, yielding over 214,000 patch-level banding class labels and 44,371 reliable image-level quality rating scores. Subsequently, we develop an effective no-reference (NR) banding evaluator for banding detection and quality assessment by leveraging frequency characteristics of banding artifacts. To be more specific, a dual convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed to concurrently learn the feature representation from the high-frequency and low-frequency maps, thereby enhancing the ability to discern banding artifacts. The quality score of a banding image is generated by pooling the banding detection maps masked by the spatial frequency filters. The experimental results demonstrate that our banding evaluator achieves a remarkably high accuracy in banding detection and also exhibits high SRCC and PLCC results with the perceptual quality labels, even without directly learning a regression model for banding quality evaluation. Oracle character recognition—an analysis of ancient Chinese inscriptions found on oracle bones—has become a pivotal field intersecting archaeology, paleography, and historical cultural studies. Traditional methods of oracle character recognition have relied heavily on manual interpretation by experts, which is not only labor-intensive but also limits broader accessibility to the general public. With recent breakthroughs in pattern recognition and deep learning, there is a growing movement towards the automation of oracle character recognition (OrCR), showing considerable promise in tackling the challenges inherent to these ancient scripts. However, a comprehensive understanding of OrCR still remains elusive. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic and structured survey of the current landscape of OrCR research. We commence by identifying and analyzing the key challenges of OrCR. Then, we provide an overview of the primary benchmark datasets and digital resources available for OrCR. A review of contemporary research methodologies follows, in which their respective efficacies, limitations, and applicability to the complex nature of oracle characters are critically highlighted and examined. Additionally, our review extends to ancillary tasks associated with OrCR across diverse disciplines, providing a broad-spectrum analysis of its applications. We conclude with a forward-looking perspective, proposing potential avenues for future investigations that could yield significant advancements in the field. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Video quality assessment (VQA) is an important processing task, aiming at predicting the quality of videos in a manner highly consistent with human judgments of perceived quality. Traditional VQA models based on natural image and/or video statistics, which are inspired both by models of projected images of the real world and by dual models of the human visual system, deliver only limited prediction performances on real-world user-generated content (UGC), as exemplified in recent large-scale VQA databases containing large numbers of diverse video contents crawled from the web. Fortunately, recent advances in deep neural networks and Large Multimodality Models (LMMs) have enabled significant progress in solving this problem, yielding better results than prior handcrafted models. Numerous deep learning-based VQA models have been developed, with progress in this direction driven by the creation of content-diverse, large-scale human-labeled databases that supply ground truth psychometric video quality data. Here, we present a comprehensive survey of recent progress in the development of VQA algorithms and the benchmarking studies and databases that make them possible.
