A deterministic Susceptible–Infected–Recovered model for studying the impact of media on epidemic dynamics

It is important to understand how the provision of information influences individuals’ behavior and its impact on disease transmission dynamics. We formulate a simple deterministic Susceptible–Infected–Recovered (SIR) model with vital dynamics and incorporate, one at a time, four media functions used in previous studies to mimic media reporting of a disease outbreak to investigate their impact on the dynamics of an epidemic. The most sensitive model parameter for the epidemic outcome at initial disease transmission and disease prevalence are obtained through normalized forward-sensitivity analyses. Media reporting does not impact initial disease transmission but affects the effective reproduction number as the media coverage begins. Numerical results show that the epidemic will affect a large proportion of the population with no media functions. Still, the epidemic time line may be short. In contrast, the key epidemiological quantities (such as age at infection, peak magnitude, peak time, end of the epidemic, and final epidemic size) vary depending on the media function used. The choice of the media function in a pandemic is critical. The media reporting on the spread of disease during pandemics should be done with care since it could counter-intuitively lead to under or overestimating the disease outbreak. © 2023 The Author(s)

Thresholded non-uniform fourier frame-based reconstruction for stripmap SAR

Fourier domain methods are fast algorithms for SAR imaging. They typically involve an interpolation in the frequency domain to re-grid non-uniform data so inverse fast Fourier transforms can be performed. In this paper, we apply a frame reconstruction algorithm, extending the non-uniform fast Fourier transform, to stripmap SAR data. Further, we present an improved thresholded frame reconstruction algorithm for robust performance and improved computational efficiency. We demonstrate compelling results on real stripmap SAR data. A new mathematical model for COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS is considered to assess the impact of COVID-19 on HIV dynamics and vice-versa. Investigating the epidemiologic synergy between COVID-19 and HIV is important. The dynamics of the full model is driven by that of its sub-models;therefore, basic analysis of the two sub-models;HIV-only and COVID-19 only is carried out. The basic reproduction number is computed and used to prove local and global asymptotic stability of the sub-models’ disease-free and endemic equilibria. Using the fmincon function in the Optimization Toolbox of MATLAB, the model is fitted to real COVID-19 data set from South Africa. The impact of intervention measures, namely, COVID-19 and HIV prevention interventions and COVID-19 treatment are incorporated into the model using time-dependent controls. It is observed that HIV prevention measures can significantly reduce the burden of co-infections with COVID-19, while effective treatment of COVID-19 could reduce co-infections with opportunistic infections such as HIV/AIDS. In particular, the COVID-19 only prevention strategy averted about 10,500 new co-infection cases, with similar number also averted by the HIV-only prevention control. © 2022 The Author(s)

Today it is very common for software systems to be built by teams located in more than one country. For example, a project team may be located in the US while the team lead resides in Sweden. How then should students be trained for this kind of work? Senior design or capstone projects offer students real-world hands-on experience but rarely while working internationally. One reason is that most instructors do not have international business contacts that allow them to find project sponsors in other countries. Another reason is the fear of having to invest a huge amount of time managing an international project. In this paper we present the general concepts related to "International Capstone Project Exchanges", the basic model behind the exchanges (student teams are led by an industry sponsor residing in a different country) and several alternate models that have been used in practice. We will give examples from projects in the US, Germany, Sweden, Australia, and Colombia. We have extended the model beyond software projects to include engineering projects as well as marketing, and journalism. We conclude with a description of an International Capstone Project Exchange website that we have developed to aid any university in establishing their own international project exchange.

Exhausting power from the hot fusion core to the plasma-facing components is one fusion energy’s biggest challenges. The MAST Upgrade tokamak uniquely integrates strong containment of neutrals within the exhaust area (divertor) with extreme divertor shaping capability. By systematically altering the divertor shape, this study shows the strongest evidence to date to our knowledge that long-legged divertors with a high magnetic field gradient (total flux expansion) deliver key power exhaust benefits without adversely impacting the hot fusion core. These benefits are already achieved with relatively modest geometry adjustments that are more feasible to integrate in reactor designs. Benefits include reduced target heat loads and improved access to, and stability of, a neutral gas buffer that ‘shields’ the target and enhances power exhaust (detachment). Analysis and model comparisons shows these benefits are obtained by combining multiple shaping aspects: long-legged divertors have expanded plasma-neutral interaction volume that drive reductions in particle and power loads, while total flux expansion enhances detachment access and stability. Containing the neutrals in the exhaust area with physical structures further augments these shaping benefits. These results demonstrate strategic variation in the divertor geometry and magnetic topology is a potential solution to one of fusion’s power exhaust challenge. Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. The long geological time needed for landform development and evolution poses a challenge for understanding and appreciating the processes involved. The Web-based Interactive Landform Simulation Model—Grand Canyon (WILSIM-GC, http://***/landform/) is an educational tool designed to help students better understand such processes, using the Grand Canyon as an example. Although the project is still ongoing, here, we present the I nitial results of using the WILSIM-GC in an introductory physical geography laboratory course. We used a quasiexperimental design to assess the efficacy of WILSIM-GC as a tool for teaching landform development and evolution. Students were assigned to a control group or a treatment group, alphabetically by last name. Pretests and posttests were administered to measure students’ understanding of the concepts and processes related to Grand Canyon formation and evolution. Results show that, although both the interactive simulation and a more-traditional, paper-based exercise were effective in helping students learn landform evolution processes, there were several advantages and affordances to the simulation approach. The improvement effect from pretest to posttest scores was large for the treatment group, but small to moderate for the control group. In addition, for those questions requiring higher-level thinking, the percentage of students answering correctly was higher in the treatment group than it was in the control group. Furthermore, responses to the attitudinal survey indicate that students generally favor the interactive simulation approach. We can leverage these advantages to enhance students’ learning by integrating interactive simulation exercises into curricular materials, including materials for online or hybrid courses and flipped classrooms. © 2016 National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

Due to the increasing number of conferences, researchers need to spend more and more time browsing through the respective calls for papers (CFPs) to identify those conferences which might be of interest to them. In this paper we study several content-based techniques to filter CFPs retrieved from the web. To this end, we explore how to exploit the information available in a typical CFP: a short introductory text, topics in the scope of the conference, and the names of the people in the program committee. While the introductory text and the topics can be directly used to model the document (e.g. to derive a tf-idf weighted vector), the names of the members of the program committee can be used in several indirect ways. One strategy we pursue in particular is to take into account the papers that these people have recently written. Along similar lines, to find out the research interests of the users, and thus to decide which CFPs to select, we look at the abstracts of the papers that they have recently written. We compare and contrast a number of approaches based on the vector space model and on generative language models. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We consider a generic non-linear consensus model and prove convergence results to a common value together with prescribed rate of convergence. Instead of a Lyapunov approach we consider a functional metric space and make a fixed point theory argument using contraction mappings. We are restricted to the case of static networks. © IFAC.
