Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with tt¯ (top antitop) pairs are reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1. The measured top quark branching ratios agree with the Standard Model predictions within the measurement uncertainties of a few percent.

This article describes a search for high-mass resonances decaying to a pair of photons using a sample of 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and limits are reported in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum model. This theory leads to the prediction of graviton states, the lightest of which could be observed at the Large Hadron Collider. A lower limit of 2.66 (1.41) TeV at 95% confidence level is set on the mass of the lightest graviton for couplings of k/M¯Pl=0.1 (0.01).

Results of a search for new phenomena in events with an energetic photon and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reported. Data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The observed data are well described by the expected Standard Model backgrounds. The expected (observed) upper limit on the fiducial cross section for the production of events with a photon and large missing transverse momentum is 6.1 (5.3) fb at 95% confidence level. Exclusion limits are presented on models of new phenomena with large extra spatial dimensions, supersymmetric quarks, and direct pair production of dark-matter candidates.

A search for the decay of neutral, weakly interacting, long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses the full data set recorded in 2012: 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=8 TeV. The search employs techniques for reconstructing decay vertices of long-lived particles decaying to jets in the inner tracking detector and muon spectrometer. Signal events require at least two reconstructed vertices. No significant excess of events over the expected background is found, and limits as a function of proper lifetime are reported for the decay of the Higgs boson and other scalar bosons to long-lived particles and for Hidden Valley Z′ and Stealth SUSY benchmark models. The first search results for displaced decays in Z′ and Stealth SUSY models are presented. The upper bounds of the excluded proper lifetimes are the most stringent to date.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is mH=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

We report the observation of Higgs boson decays to WW* based on an excess over background of 6.1 standard deviations in the dilepton final state, where the Standard Model expectation is 5.8 standard deviations. Evidence for the vector-boson fusion (VBF) production process is obtained with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. The results are obtained from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb−1 from s=7 and 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. For a Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV, the ratio of the measured value to the expected value of the total production cross section times branching fraction is 1.09−0.15+0.16(stat)−0.14+0.17(syst). The corresponding ratios for the gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production mechanisms are 1.02±0.19(stat)−0.18+0.22(syst) and 1.27−0.40+0.44(stat)−0.21+0.30(syst), respectively. At s=8 TeV, the total production cross sections are measured to be σ(gg→H→WW*)=4.6±0.9(stat)−0.7+0.8(syst) pb and σ(VBF H→WW*)=0.51−0.15+0.17(stat)−0.08+0.13(syst) pb. The fiducial cross section is determined for the gluon-fusion process in exclusive final states with zero or one associated jet.

The transverse polarization of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is measured. The analysis uses 760 μb−1 of minimum bias data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2010. The measured transverse polarization averaged over Feynman xF from 5×10−5 to 0.01 and transverse momentum pT from 0.8 to 15 GeV is −0.010±0.005(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ and 0.002±0.006(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ¯. It is also measured as a function of xF and pT, but no significant dependence on these variables is observed. Prior to this measurement, the polarization was measured at fixed-target experiments with center-of-mass energies up to about 40 GeV. The ATLAS results are compatible with the extrapolation of a fit from previous measurements to the xF range covered by this measurement.

The propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in an AlGaAs waveguide array is studied using frequency-resolved optical gating measurements. In the nonlinear regime, the measurements show that the pulses at the output of the array evolve toward a set chirp value that is independent of the input chirp. Simulations reproduce the experimental results. The observations can be described as a fixed-point attractor on a chirp-intensity map.

An Effective Over-sampling Method for Imbalanced Data Sets Classification

Imbalanced data sets in real-world applications have a majority class with normal instances and a minority class with abnormal or important instances. Learning from such data sets usually generates biased classifiers that have a higher predictive accuracy over the majority class, but a rather poorer predictive accuracy over the minority class. The Synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) is specifically designed for learning from imbalanced data sets. This paper presents a novel approach for learning from imbalanced data sets, based on an improved SMOTE algorithm. The approach deals with noise data by a hierarchical filtering mechanism, employs a selection strategy of the minority instances and makes full use of dynamic distribution density of the minority followed by the SMOTE process. This empirical analysis of the approach showed quantitatively competitive with SMOTE and series of its improved algorithm in terms of the receiver operating characteristic curve when applied to several highly and moderately imbalanced data sets.

The intrinsic thermodynamical factors that dominate the stability of nanocrystallines are investigated through the microcosmic process of grain *** results suggest that nanocrystallines grows at a certain temperature and the critical temperature is determined by the vacancy formation energy and diffusion activation energy of the *** on the hypothesis,a simple model is proposed to predict the size-dependent critical temperature of grain *** this model,we investigate the thermal stability of nanocrystallines V and Au,compared with the results *** is shown that the critical temperature decreases with decreasing size,showing an evident size *** research reveals that the thermal stability is dependent on the energetic state of the nanocrystallines and the mobility of the inner atoms.
