Aspect-based sentiment analysis in MOOCs: a systematic literature review introducing the MASC-MEF framework

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) in massive open online courses (MOOCs) offers a powerful tool to understand student experiences and improve the quality of online education. As MOOCs grow in popularity, there is an increasing need to analyze student feedback at a granular level, focusing on specific course aspects rather than just overall sentiment. Despite ABSA’s potential in MOOCs, research in this specific domain remains limited. Thus, this review of the literature seeks to fill this gap by systematically examining ABSA within the realm of MOOCs. We utilized a PRISMA framework to guide the search process. Consequently, this review covered 57 studies conducted between 2019 and 2024, retrieved from eight electronic research databases. The studies included in this analysis were examined on the basis of their datasets, data preprocessing, ABSA tasks in MOOCs, evaluation aspects in online courses, fusion approach in ABSA, techniques of word representations, and evaluation criteria utilized to evaluate the proposed models. Additionally, this review introduces the multiaspect sentiment classification using multiembedding and fusion (MASC-MEF) framework, a novel approach that uniquely incorporates multiword embeddings and multifeature extraction along with advanced classification techniques. Results shed light on several critical issues and various limitations, pointing towards future directions for ABSA research within the realm of MOOCs. This review underscores significant contributions to improving ABSA in educational technology, with a focus on course effectiveness and advancements in online learning, guiding researchers towards innovative techniques to tackle this challenge in the future. © The Author(s) 2025.

Leukemia, a malignant disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of specific types of white blood cells (WBC), has prompted increased interest in leveraging automatic WBC classification system. This study presents the design of a robust WBC classification system, integrating deep learning with microscopic image analysis. The proposed classification model is designed to categorize blood cells into four distinct groups: eosinophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and neutrophil. The study employs a Kaggle image dataset for comprehensive learning. The dataset comprises 12,500 microscopic images used to categorize the four blood cell groups. To enhance performance and reduce the likelihood of overfitting, transfer learning techniques are employed. Six deep transfer learning models namely VGG16, ResNet50, AlexNet, MobileNet, GoogLeNet, and EfficientNetBO are used for feature extraction and classification. The results of the experiments show that VGG16 and MobileNet demonstrated enhancements compared to other pre-trained models when evaluated on both augmented and original datasets. A diverse set of evaluation criteria was employed to thoroughly assess the effectiveness of medical image classification. Notably, the VGG16 and MobileNet models accurately predicted Lymphocytes and Monocytes with a 100% accuracy rate, and Eosinophil and Neutrophil with rates of 99.35% and 99.81%, respectively. This research work empower medical practitioners, particularly in the field of pathology and hematology by providing advanced tools for accurate blood cell classification. The proposed VGG16 and MobileNet models hold promise for simplifying WBC classification, improving decision-making processes, and ultimately advancing patient care in the medical domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Energy and QoS-aware virtual machine placement approach for IaaS cloud datacenter

Virtualization technology enables cloud providers to abstract, hide, and manage the underlying physical resources of cloud data centers in a flexible and scalable manner. It allows placing multiple independent virtual machines (VMs) on a single server in order to improve resource utilization and energy efficiency. However, determining the optimal VM placement is crucial as it directly impacts load balancing, energy consumption, and performance degradation within the data center. Furthermore, deciding on VM placement based on a single factor is usually insufficient to improve data center performance because many factors must be considered, and ignoring them may be too expensive. This paper improves a new multi-objective VM placement (MVMP) algorithm using a quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) technique. We call it QPSO-MOVMP, and its objective is to find the Pareto optimal solution for the VM placement problem by balancing different goals. This algorithm generates Pareto optimal solutions that save power by minimizing the number of running physical machines, avoid performance degradation by maintaining service level agreement (SLA), and improve load balancing by keeping server loads at optimal utilization. The experimental results show that QPSO-MOVMP had superior performance in terms of power consumption and performance degradation compared to three other multi-objective algorithms and three conventional single-objective algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed QPSO-MOVMP achieves a consumption of 2.4 × 104 watts in power. Furthermore, it outperformed the others, achieving a minimum of 12% SLA breaches while experiencing a significant surge in requests from VMs. Moreover, the proposed model generated Pareto solutions that had a better distribution than those derived from a comparative method. © The Author(s) 2025.

Effective student management is crucial for fostering productive learning environments. This study presents a hybrid framework integrating machine learning (ML) techniques with rough set theory to enhance student management by identifying at-risk students and enabling personalized interventions. The model combines classification algorithms with rough set-based decision rules to analyze complex student data, including academic performance, behavior patterns, and levels of engagement. The ML layered approach detects patterns and outliers, supporting data-driven decisions to improve student well-being and educational outcomes. Evaluation on the Open University Learning Analytics Dataset (OULAD) demonstrated high accuracy (97.85%) in predicting student outcomes and precision (94.62%) in identifying students needing support. The hybrid approach outperformed conventional methods by approximately 15%, showcasing its transformative potential. This framework effectively monitors student performance and enables customized interventions to meet individual learning needs, fostering a more supportive educational environment. © 2013 IEEE.

Telerehabilitation systems leveraging depth video analysis provide an effective solution for remote physiotherapy, particularly for individuals with physical disabilities. This study presents an advanced exercise classification framework that integrates multi-modal feature extraction and attention-based transformation to enhance rehabilitation monitoring. The proposed pipeline begins with depth image preprocessing, followed by human detection using a pre-trained Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG)-Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. The human silhouette is segmented using the GrabCut algorithm, enabling robust region-of-interest extraction. We propose a novel Lightweight Two-tier Key Body Point Detection (LT-KBPD) algorithm to efficiently and accurately identify key skeletal points, which are then used to extract both static and dynamic kinematic features. In parallel, silhouette-based analysis is performed, where shape descriptors, dense optical flow, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM)-based body part segmentation, and contour analysis extract spatial and motion-related features. The extracted feature sets are fused into a comprehensive feature vector and further refined using an attention-based transformation mechanism to highlight salient features relevant to exercise classification. Finally, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is employed to model temporal dependencies and classify exercises with high accuracy. The proposed approach is validated on three benchmark depth-video datasets: Kimore, K3DA and MEx - Multi-modal Exercise Dataset, achieving classification accuracies of 92.19%, 91.35%, and 85.51%, respectively. These results demonstrate the system’s effectiveness in accurately recognizing rehabilitation exercises for individuals with physical disabilities. Future work aims to enhance the adaptability of the system through personalized rehabilitation feedback and improved temporal modeling techniques. © 2013 IEEE.

As technology continues to evolve rapidly, cybersecurity has become a critical global concern. The increasing sophistication of cyber threats poses significant risks to individuals, businesses, and governments. Secure Multiparty Computation (SMC) facilitates secure collaboration among multiple parties while safeguarding the privacy of their confidential data. This paper introduces a two-party quantum SMC protocol designed for evaluating binary Boolean functions using single qubits. Complexity analyses demonstrate a reduction of 66.7% in required quantum resources, achieved by utilizing single qubits instead of multi-particle entangled states. However, the quantum communication cost has increased by 40% due to the amplified exchange of qubits among participants. Furthermore, we bolster security by performing additional quantum operations along the y-axis of the Bloch sphere, effectively hiding the output from potential adversaries. We design the corresponding quantum circuit and implement the proposed protocol on the IBM Qiskit platform, yielding reliable outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Recent years have witnessed tremendous advancements in Al tools (e.g., ChatGPT, GPT 4, and Bard), driven by the growing power, reasoning, and efficiency of Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs have been shown to excel in tasks ranging from poem writing and coding to essay generation and puzzle solving. Despite their proficiency in general queries, specialized tasks such as metaphor understanding and fake news detection often require finely tuned models, posing a comparison challenge with specialized Deep Learning (DL). We propose an assessment framework to compare task-specific intelligence with general-purpose LLMs on suicide and depression tendency identification. For this purpose, we trained two DL models on a suicide and depression detection dataset, followed by testing their performance on a test set. Afterward, the same test dataset is used to evaluate the performance of four LLMs (GPT 3.5, GPT 4, Google Bard, and MS Bing) using four classification metrics. The BERT-based DL model performed the best among all, with a testing accuracy of 94.61%, while GPT 4 was the runner-up with accuracy 92.5%. Results demonstrate that LLMs do not outperform the specialized DL models but are able to achieve comparable performance, making them a decent option for downstream tasks without specialized training. However, LLMs outperformed specialized models on the reduced dataset. © 2015 IEEE.

The recent development of advanced machine learning methods for hybrid models has greatly addressed the need for the correct prediction of electrical prices. This method combines AlexNet and LSTM algorithms, which are used to introduce a new model with higher accuracy in price forecasting. Despite RNN and ANN being effective, they often fail to deal with forex time sequence data. The traditional methods do not accurately forecast the prices. These traditional methods only focus on demand and price which leads to insufficient analysis of data. To address this issue, using the hybrid approach, which focuses on external variables that also effect the predicted prices. Nevertheless, due to AlexNet's excellent feature extraction and LSTM's learning sequential patterns, the prediction accuracy is vastly increased. The model is built on the past data, which has been supplied with the most significant elements like demand, temperature, sunlight, and rain. For example, the model applies methods, such as minimum-maximum scaling and a time window, to predict the electricity prices of the future. The results show that this hybrid model is good than the standalone ones in terms of accuracy. Although we got our accuracy rating of 97.08, it shows higher accompaniments than remaining models RNN and ANN with accuracies of 96.64 and 96.63 respectively. © 2025 IEEE.
