uFOIL: An Unsupervised Fusion of Image Processing and Language Understanding

In academic institutions, processing and evaluating documents such as exam scripts remains a labor-intensive process susceptible to human error. Traditional digitization systems face significant challenges in handling the complexities of mixed handwritten and printed text and varying document structures. These challenges are exacerbated by the absence of annotated datasets due to privacy concerns, particularly in contexts involving sensitive exam evaluations. To address these issues, this study introduces uFOIL, an unsupervised ensemble-based framework that integrates advanced image and language processing techniques to automate the extraction and validation of key information. The framework employs a majority voting mechanism that combines four state-of-the-art optical character recognition systems. Furthermore, a transformer architecture is incorporated to enhance contextual understanding and the structured formatting of extracted text that follows a post-processing confidence scoring mechanism. The proposed framework achieves high performance, with accuracies of 95.77% and 96.48% for student names and IDs, respectively;and 95.07% for total mark validation based on a dataset of exam script samples. Additionally, experiments on the benchmark ICDAR2013 dataset suggest the framework’s strong applicability achieving precision, recall, and F1-scores of 95.89%, 97.86%, and 96.87%, respectively. © 2025 The Authors.

Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms for Predicting Thyroid Disorders in Diabetic Patients

Machine Learning (ML), a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been used successfully in the healthcare domain for disease diagnosis. Thyroid disorders and diabetes are two of the most prevalent and interconnected chronic diseases, as both play critical roles in regulating various physiological processes in the body. This study aims to predict thyroid disorders in diabetes patients using six machine learning algorithms: Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Naïve Bayes (NB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). A locally sourced dataset comprising 44,539 instances of diabetic patients was utilized, undergoing preprocessing steps including data cleaning, encoding, and balancing. Two balancing techniques were employed: manual balancing and RandomUnderSampler. The dataset was partitioned into training and testing sets using a Stratified K-Fold cross-validation approach with 10 folds to ensure robust evaluation. Each algorithm’s performance was assessed using metrics such as accuracy and F1-score. Among the models, the RF algorithm outperformed the others, achieving the highest accuracy of 95% on the manually balanced dataset and 84% when the RandomUnderSampler technique was employed. Additionally, the F1-scores for RF were 95% and 82%, respectively, indicating its robustness in handling imbalanced datasets. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate preprocessing techniques and machine learning methods for healthcare datasets. The findings can assist healthcare providers in making early diagnoses and interventions for thyroid disorders in diabetic patients, potentially improving their quality of life and overall healthcare outcomes. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. Emotion recognition from EEG (electroencephalogram) signals is crucial in mental health diagnostics and human-computer interaction but is often hindered by high dimensionality, noise, and complex temporal dependencies in the data. This paper presents a novel approach that integrates transformer models, attention mechanisms, and transfer learning to enhance emotion recognition accuracy from EEG signals. The proposed methodology consists of two phases: Attention Enhanced Base Model Development (AE-BMD) and Cross-Dataset Fine Tuning Adaptation (CD-FTA). In the AE-BMD phase, the base model is developed and trained on the SEED-IV dataset (15 participants, 62 EEG channels), achieving an accuracy of 84%, with an average precision of 84.75%, recall of 84% and F1-score of 84%. This phase employs optimized feature extraction from key EEG frequency bands (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma) using techniques such as MFCC, GFCC, power spectral density, and Hjorth parameters. A transformer encoder with integrated spectral and temporal attention mechanisms captures intricate patterns and long-range dependencies within the EEG signals. In the CD-FTA phase, the model undergoes fine-tuning on the SEED-V dataset (20 participants, 62 channels) leading to an improved accuracy of 90%, with an average precision of 90.6%, recall of 90.6%, and F1-score of 90.6%. The model’s generalization is further validated on the MPED dataset (23 participants, 62 channels, seven emotion classes), achieving 79%, with an average precision of 79.3%, recall of 79.3% and F1-score of 79.1% across diverse emotional states. This cross-dataset adaptation leverages transfer learning to enhance the model’s generalization across different emotional states and EEG datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms traditional methods, achieving superior accuracy and robustness in emotion recognition tasks. As healthcare services have become increasingly digitized, Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have become widely adopted, providing seamless data exchange among providers. Conventional EHRs, however, are extremely vulnerable to cyber threats because patients' sensitive data is centralized and transmitted electronically. The paper proposes a decentralized, privacy-preserving framework for managing EHRs on blockchains in order to address these security and privacy concerns. Using cryptographic techniques, such as homomorphic encryption and zero-knowledge proofs, the proposed system enhances security and ensures data integrity. Additionally, the model facilitates scalable, efficient, and secure access to patient records through the integration of cloud-based storage and blockchain. Using smart contracts, we also ensure compliance with healthcare regulations by regulating access control and authentication. As a result of performance evaluations, the proposed approach is demonstrated to be feasible, and the advantages it offers in terms of security, privacy, and efficiency are highlighted. © 2025 The Authors

Optimizing therapy and rehabilitation for Parkinson's disease (PD) requires early identification and precise evaluation of the illness's course. However, there is disagreement about the best way to use gait analysis to categorize the severity of motor symptoms and identify early-stage Parkinson's disease. The precision of machine learning (ML) models in identifying early and intermediate stages of Parkinson's disease was assessed in this study. Six ML models are used in this study for the prediction of PD. Different metrics are used to evaluate ML models such as accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and AUC score. Then we propose a multi-criteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) to evaluate the ML models and select the best one. Two MCDM methods are used such as CRITIC method to compute the criteria weights and the TOPSIS method to rank the alternatives. These methods are used under the bipolar neutrosophic sets (BNSs) to deal with uncertainty information. The results show the support vector machine is the best ML model for the prediction of PD. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

Blockchain-based knowledge-aware semantic communications for remote driving image transmission

Remote driving, an emergent technology enabling remote operations of vehicles, presents a significant challenge in transmitting large volumes of image data to a central server. This requirement outpaces the capacity of traditional communication methods. To tackle this, we propose a novel framework using semantic communications, through a region of interest semantic segmentation method, to reduce the communication costs by transmitting meaningful semantic information rather than bit-wise data. To solve the knowledge base inconsistencies inherent in semantic communications, we introduce a blockchain-based edge-assisted system for managing diverse and geographically varied semantic segmentation knowledge bases. This system not only ensures the security of data through the tamper-resistant nature of blockchain but also leverages edge computing for efficient management. Additionally, the implementation of blockchain sharding handles differentiated knowledge bases for various tasks, thus boosting overall blockchain efficiency. Experimental results show a great reduction in latency by sharding and an increase in model accuracy, confirming our framework's effectiveness.

Facing the growing menace of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, there’s a critical demand for enhanced detection mechanisms. This necessitates a shift from traditional methodologies to more advanced, dynamic detection techniques. The significance of advanced computational methods in pinpointing DDoS threats is increasingly recognized. This paper delves into the crucial role these techniques play in detecting DDoS activities, with a focus on the adaptability of network-based algorithms and the proficiency of advanced models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and autoencoders in identifying complex attack patterns that traditional methods may overlook. Our findings reveal that while advanced computational strategies offer considerable benefits over conventional methods in terms of detection accuracy and adaptability to evolving threats, they also present unique challenges, including higher computational demands and the need for continuous model training to keep pace with new attack vectors. The comparative analysis underscores the operational advantages and potential limitations of these approaches, providing a nuanced understanding of their application in real-world scenarios. This investigation aims to present a current view of advancements in digital security techniques and to serve as a basis for future research and the development of innovative, practical solutions. It suggests that enhancing the resilience of digital infrastructures against DDoS attacks will require not only technological innovation but also a comprehensive strategy that includes ongoing research, collaboration among stakeholders, and the adoption of adaptive, scalable detection systems capable of responding to the dynamic nature of cyber threats. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
