Passive radar imaging has been extensively studied and is based on an illuminator-of-opportunity, such as a wireless access point, providing a signal that scatters from targets and is incident on a receiving node(s) in order to infer information on the range and velocity of the target scene. Such systems universally require reference signal regeneration, from a dedicated channel, that is cross-correlated with the received signal in order to extract the range/Doppler information of the target. This paper presents one of several techniques developed by the authors to achieve passive radar (or RF) imaging without any requirement for extraction of the reference signal. The concept is analogous to optical systems in which various source(s) provide general illumination of a target scene, the scattered signals of which are gathered and processed at an optical sensor in order to reconstruct the image, but without any requirement to extract the illumination (reference) source itself. Such an approach offers numerous practical advantages in achieving imaging from a single passive sensor without the additional requirement of precise, or indeed any, regeneration of the illuminating source: a reference-free approach. This paper presents one such technique based on sampling of the complex signal distribution over an antenna aperture and near-field processing to form a two/three-dimensional reconstruction of the target scene. The fundamental principles of the technique are described along with analysis of basic performance limits. Modelling is presented to illustrate the capability of the technique, which is validated by experimental measurement with a WiFi access point-based prototype system.

The Soft-PVTOL: modeling and control

This paper presents, for the first time, the soft planar vertical take-off and landing (Soft-PVTOL) aircraft. This concept captures the soft aerial vehicle’s fundamental dynamics with a minimum number of states and inputs but retains the main features to consider when designing control laws. Unlike conventional PVTOL and multi-rotors, where altering position inevitably impacts orientation due to their underactuated design, the Soft-PVTOL offers the unique advantage of separating these dynamics, opening doors to unparalleled maneuverability and precision. We demonstrate that the Soft-PVTOL can be modeled using the Euler-Lagrange equations by assuming a constant curvature model in the aerial robot’s arms. Such a mathematical model is presented in detail and can be extended to several constant curvature segments in each Soft-PVTOL arm. Moreover, we design a passivity-based control law that exploits the flexibility of the robot’s arms. We solve the tracking control problem, proving that the error equilibrium globally exponentially converges to zero. The controller is tested in numerical simulations, demonstrating robust performance and ensuring the efficacy of the closed-loop system. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Social media is profoundly changing our society with its unprecedented spreading power. Due to the complexity of human behaviors and the diversity of massive messages, the information spreading dynamics are complicated, and the reported mechanisms are different and even controversial. Based on data from mainstream social media platforms, including WeChat, Weibo, and Twitter, cumulatively encompassing a total of 7.45 billion users, we uncover a ubiquitous mechanism that the information spreading dynamics are basically driven by the interplay of social reinforcement and social weakening effects. Accordingly, we propose a concise equation, which, surprisingly, can well describe all the empirical large-scale spreading trajectories. Our theory resolves a number of controversial claims and satisfactorily explains many phenomena previously observed. It also reveals that the highly clustered nature of social networks can lead to rapid and high-frequency information bursts with relatively small coverage per burst. This vital feature enables social media to have a high capacity and diversity for information dissemination, beneficial for its ecological development. © 2025, CC BY.

Place recognition is the foundation for enabling autonomous systems to achieve independent decision-making and safe operations. It is also crucial in tasks such as loop closure detection and global localization within SLAM. Previous methods utilize mundane point cloud representations as input and deep learning-based LiDAR-based Place Recognition (LPR) approaches employing different point cloud image inputs with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or transformer architectures. However, the recently proposed Mamba deep learning model, combined with state space models (SSMs), holds great potential for long sequence modeling. Therefore, we developed OverlapMamba, a novel network for place recognition, which represents input range views (RVs) as sequences. In a novel way, we employ a stochastic reconstruction approach to build shift state space models, compressing the visual representation. Evaluated on three different public datasets, our method effectively detects loop closures, showing robustness even when traversing previously visited locations from different directions. Relying on raw range view inputs, it outperforms typical LiDAR and multi-view combination methods in time complexity and speed, indicating strong place recognition capabilities and realtime efficiency. A public cloud is a computing service offered by third-party service providers to Internet users. Some cloud service providers offer both free and paid services, where the prices are scaled to meet the needs and offered more benefits to clients than free cloud services. This paper aims to study the familiarity of public cloud services among respondents of multiple age groups and to find out the advantages and disadvantages of using the public cloud. The survey was taken randomly through google form media. Respondents are the public who use cloud services in Malaysia. A Google Form is used to gather data from the public among multiple age groups, from individuals aged 12 to 45 years and above. Based on the conducted survey, respondents show positive responses towards their knowledge and the usage of public cloud services. Findings from the survey revealed that almost 90.3% of the respondents use public cloud services, and about 75% of them think that the public cloud is reliable and safe to store data. Most respondents have indicated that Google Drive is their preferred public cloud, and the majority them use the public cloud for academic purposes. In conclusion, public cloud services are rather efficient for users with diverse usage necessities. Some public cloud services are reliable and affordable for students, as students need cloud storage for academic purposes, especially during pandemics where everything is conducted online. © 2022 IEEE.

This work presents a high-performance approach for 3D lung segmentation tasks in computer tomography images using a new intelligent machine learning algorithm called Floor of Log(FoL). The Support Vector Machine was used to learn the better parameter of the FoL algorithm using the parenchyma and its border as labels. Sensitivity, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), Hausdorff Distance (HD), Dice, Accuracy (ACC), and Jaccard were used to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The FoL was compared with recent 3D region growing, 3D Adaptive Crisp Active Contour, 3D OsiriX toolbox, and Level-set algorithm based on the coherent propagation method algorithms. The FoL algorithm achieves good results with approximately 19 s in the most significant result in an exam with 430 slices and presents similarity indexes achieving HD 3.5, DICE 83.63, and Jaccard 99.73 and qualitative indexes achieving Sensitivity 83.87, MCC 83.08, and ACC 99.62. The proposed approach of this work showed a simple and powerful algorithm to segment lung in computer tomography images of the chest region by combining similar textures, highlighting the lung structure. The FoL was presented as a new supervised clustering algorithm which can be trained to achieve better results and attached to other approaches as Convolutional Deep Neural Networks applications. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the criticality of timely intervention in a situation exacerbated by a shortage in medical staff and equipment. Pain-level screening is the initial step toward identifying the severity of patient conditions. Automatic recognition of state and feelings help in identifying patient symptoms to take immediate adequate action and providing a patient-centric medical plan tailored to a patient's state. In this paper, we propose a framework for pain-level detection for deployment in the United Arab Emirates and assess its performance using the most used approaches in the literature. Our results show that a deployment of a pain-level deep learning detection framework is promising in identifying the pain level accurately.
