The Design and Realization of Smart Energy Management System based on Supply-Demand Coordination

Sub-Saharan Africa in recent years have been faced with many power challenges including limited and unreliable power supply, high cost of power supply and underdeveloped power infrastructures with serious negative impacts on the socio-economic development. This paper presents the development of Smart Energy Management Solution (SEMS) for buildings. The work seeks to propose a generic algorithm that supports existing wiring infrastructure of buildings in Africa to provide 24/7 reliable power supply and efficient management of limited power supply in buildings. SEMS focuses on the use of robust, distributed and heterogeneous power sources connected in islanding phenomenon to ensure reliability and also using a dynamic approach with energy efficiency measures to provide a balance between power supply and demand in buildings. A demonstration of SEMS for buildings was performed in MATLAB Simulink using actual data obtained from selected buildings at Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana. SEMS revealed higher power reliability and efficiency in energy usage. © 2017

Background Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Methods We used the Cause of Death Ensemble modelling strategy to analyse vital registration data, verbal autopsy data, mortality surveillance data, and minimally invasive tissue sampling data. We used DisMod-MR (version 2.1), a Bayesian meta-regression tool, to analyse incidence and prevalence data identified via systematic reviews, population-based surveys, and claims and inpatient data. We calculated diarrhoeal disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) as the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) for each location, year, and age-sex group. For aetiology estimation, we used a counterfactual approach to quantify population-attributable fractions (PAFs). Additionally, we estimated the diarrhoeal disease burden attributable to the independent effects of risk factors using the comparative risk assessment framework. Findings In 2021, diarrhoeal diseases caused an estimated 1.17 million (95% uncertainty interval 0.793-1.62) deaths globally, representing a 60.3% (50.6-69.0) decrease since 1990 (2.93 million [2.31-3.73] deaths). The most pronounced decline was in children younger than 5 years, with a 79.2% (72.4-84.6) decrease in diarrhoeal deaths. Background: Although mental health challenges disproportionately affect people in humanitarian contexts, most refugee youth do not receive the mental health support needed. Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa, hosting over 1.58 million refugees in 2022, with more than 111,000 living in the city of Kampala. There is limited information about effective and feasible interventions to improve mental health outcomes and mental health literacy, and to reduce mental health stigma among urban refugee adolescents and youth in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Virtual reality (VR) is a promising approach to reduce stigma and improve mental health and coping, yet such interventions have not yet been tested in LMICs where most forcibly displaced people reside. Group Problem Management Plus (GPM+) is a scalable brief psychological transdiagnostic intervention for people experiencing a range of adversities, but has not been tested with adolescents and youth to date. Further, mobile health (mHealth) strategies have demonstrated promise in promoting mental health literacy. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of two youth-tailored mental health interventions (VR alone and VR combined with GMP+) in comparison with the standard of care in improving mental health outcomes among refugee and displaced youth aged 16-24 years in Kampala, Uganda. Methods: A three-arm cluster randomized controlled trial will be implemented across five informal settlements grouped into three sites, based on proximity, and randomized in a 1:1:1 design. Approximately 330 adolescents (110 per cluster) are enrolled and will be followed for approximately 16 weeks. Data will be collected at three time points: baseline enrollment, 8 weeks following enrollment, and 16 weeks after enrollment. As an important research topic in computer vision, fine-grained classification which aims to recognition subordinate-level categories has attracted significant attention. We propose a novel region based ensemble learning network for fine-grained classification. Our approach contains a detection module and a module for classification. The detection module is based on the faster R-CNN framework to locate semantic regions of the object. The classification module using an ensemble learning method, trains a set of sub-classifiers for different semantic regions and combines them together to get a stronger classifier. In the evaluation, we implement experiments on the CUB-2011 dataset and the result of experiments proves our method is efficient for fine-grained classification. We also extend our approach to remote scene recognition and evaluate it on the NWPU-RESISC45 dataset.

Artificial Gas Lift (AGL) technology is used in mature oil wells to increase the oil production rate. Improper control of this system can produce casing heading instability resulting in slug flow and problems in downstream equipment. The AGL system has very complex nonlinear dynamics, which makes the tuning of the controller parameters difficult on a real system. In this paper, an AGL simulator is developed to test and tune the controllers before installation in the field. The simulator uses the concept of Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) which emulates the real behavior of gas lift system and connects to a Programmable Logic controller (PLC) or Distributed control System (DCS) to design and optimize control algorithms. The AGL simulator uses accurate model and high performance processing. It is equipped with a Human Machine Interface (HMI), which displays the status of AGL system using animation and trending so that slugging can be easily identified. The HIL can be operated in two modes: real time and accelerated time. An example of control tuning method using Modified Relay Feedback Test (MRFT) is used to demonstrate controller gain tuning in accelerated mode, based on its performance on the AGL simulator. The proposed HIL simulator can prove to be a convenient practical tool used for testing automation solutions before connecting them to real gas lift process in the field. © 2017, Society of Petroleum Engineers

Crowd counting problem aims to count the number of objects within an image or a frame in the videos and is usually solved by estimating the density map generated from the object location annotations. The values in the density map, by nature, take two possible states: zero indicating no object around, a non-zero value indicating the existence of objects and the value denoting the local object density. In contrast to traditional methods which do not differentiate the density prediction of these two states, we propose to use a dedicated network branch to predict the object/non-object mask and then combine its prediction with the input image to produce the density map. Our rationale is that the mask prediction could be better modeled as a binary segmentation problem and the difficulty of estimating the density could be reduced if the mask is known. A key to the proposed scheme is the strategy of incorporating the mask prediction into the density map estimator. To this end, we study five possible solutions, and via analysis and experimental validation we identify the most effective one. Through extensive experiments on five public datasets, we demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach over the baselines and show that our network could achieve the state-of-the-art performance. Since the development of twenty-first Century, the theory and methods of robot control have become more and more mature. With the continuous development of control methods, various kinds of controllers have been innovating and breaking through the production. The performance of the control devices is becoming more and more powerful and the price is getting cheaper and cheaper. In terms of robot control methods, the robot control method can be divided into two categories: PID control method and control method based on robot dynamics model. In this chapter, the feasibility analysis of the control method of rehabilitation robot is discussed, and the control effect of the rehabilitation robot control system is optimized by adding fuzzy control on the basis of sliding mode variable structure.

Recently, advanced control methods like machine leaning are increasingly applied to autonomous vehicle. This paper focuses on velocity control in a right-turn traffic scenario. A Markov Decision Processes(MDPs) is modeled and the actor-critic reinforcement learning architecture is employed. Then the kernel-based least squares policy iteration algorithm(KLSPI) is applied. Simulation results show that the proposed method can perform different policy in different cases, which preliminarily verify the rationality. © 2017 IEEE.
