In this paper, we advocate Crowdlet, a novel self-organized mobile crowdsourcing paradigm, in which a mobile task requester can proactively exploit a massive crowd of encountered mobile workers at real-time for quick and high-quality results. We present a comprehensive system model of Crowdlet that defines task, worker arrival and worker ability models. Further, we introduce a service quality concept to indicate the expected service gain that a requester can enjoy when he recruits an encountered worker, by jointly taking into account worker ability, real-timeness and task reward. Based on the models, we formulate an online worker recruitment problem to maximize the expected sum of service quality. We derive an optimal worker recruitment policy through the dynamic programming principle, and show that it exhibits a nice threshold based structure. We conduct extensive performance evaluation based on real traces, and numerical results demonstrate that our policy can achieve superior performance and improve more than 30% performance gain over classic policies. Besides, our Android prototype shows that Crowdlet is cost-efficient, requiring less than 7 seconds and 6 Joule in terms of time and energy cost for policy computation in most cases.

This paper investigates generation undulatory locomotion of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) in a crawling robot via biomimetic learning. Firstly, the anatomy and the morphology of C. elegans are explored. Then, the locomotion of C. elegans is analyzed from cellular level by using dynamic neuron networks (DNNs) and center pattern generations (CPGs). Based on these biological analyses, a biomimetic crawling robot is developed and a digital approximation method is adopted for the robot mimicking the locomotion of C. elegans. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of the robotic system and the motion generation approach.

This paper investigates the asymptotic stability of a class of switched linear time-invariant discrete-time systems. Without the restriction of switching signals, a novel result is first proposed to guarantee uniform global asymptotic stability. Then, it is applied to studying some consensus problems of linear multi-agent systems under switching network topology. The proposed result modifies some insufficient condition assumed in a related paper and establishes the exponentially fast convergence rate of the multi-agent system. An interesting example illustrates the effectiveness of the derived results. © 2016 IEEE.

The process of using one image to guide the filtering process of another one is called Guided Image Filtering (GIF). The main challenge of GIF is the structure inconsistency between the guidance image and the target image. Besides, noise in the target image is also a challenging issue especially when it is heavy. In this paper, we propose a general framework for Robust Guided Image Filtering (RGIF), which contains a data term and a smoothness term, to solve the two issues mentioned above. The data term makes our model simultaneously denoise the target image and perform GIF which is robust against the heavy noise. The smoothness term is able to make use of the property of both the guidance image and the target image which is robust against the structure inconsistency. While the resulting model is highly non-convex, it can be solved through the proposed Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares (IRLS) in an efficient manner. For challenging applications such as guided depth map upsampling, we further develop a data-driven parameter optimization scheme to properly determine the parameter in our model. This optimization scheme can help to preserve small structures and sharp depth edges even for a large upsampling factor (8× for example). Moreover, the specially designed structure of the data term and the smoothness term makes our model perform well in edge-preserving smoothing for single-image tasks (i.e., the guidance image is the target image itself). It performs well in several challenging applications in avoiding halos, gradient reversals and properly preserving edges with noise/texture being well smoothed. Through extensive experimental results, we show that the proposed RGIF can have promising performance in many applications such as guided depth map upsampling, flash/no flash filtering, detail enhancement, HDR tone mapping, structure smoothing and clip-art JPEG compression artifact removal. Hazy images hinder image understanding in many applications such as autonomous vehicle. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to improve image quality of hazy images. Our method estimates the transmission function based on a linear model that allows efficient computation and employs quadtree to search for a region that best represents the scatter of airlight. Experiments were conducted using publicly available images. It is demonstrated that our proposed method achieved comparable results to the state-of-the-art ones. In the estimation of sunlight radiance, the quadtree that integrates local brightness and gradient as well as spatial constraint provide a robust means to identify region of sky. Most significantly, our proposed method greatly improved the efficiency. When dealing with moderate and large size image, the improvement could be more than thirty-fold.

In a directional modulation network, a general power iterative (GPI) based beamforming scheme is proposed to maximize the secrecy rate (SR), where there are two optimization variables required to be optimized. The first one is the useful precoding vector of transmitting confidential messages to the desired user while the second one is the artificial noise (AN) projection matrix of forcing more AN to eavesdroppers. In such a secure network, the paramount problem is how to design or optimize the two optimization variables by different criteria. To maximize the SR (Max-SR), an alternatively iterative structure (AIS) is established between the AN projection matrix and the precoding vector for confidential messages. To choose a good initial value of iteration process of GPI, the proposed Max-SR method can readily double its convergence speed compared to the random choice of initial value. With only four iterations, it may rapidly converge to its rate ceil. From simulation results, it follows that the SR performance of the proposed AIS of GPI-based Max-SR is much better than those of conventional leakage-based and null-space projection methods in the medium and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, and its achievable SR performance gain gradually increases as SNR increases. Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Encryption algorithms are applied to a variety of fields and the security of encryption algorithms depends heavily on the computational infeasibility of exhaustive key-space search. RC4 algorithm has an extensive application for stream encryption, however, the disadvantages of traditional RC4 serial algorithm are large computational quantity and slow computation speed, which means a great challenge for throughput of computing system. Graphics processors recently have been widely used as accelerators for high throughput computing. In this paper, GPU is used to improve the efficiency and performance of attacking RC4 algorithm. First, we revised RC4 algorithm to make it easier to parallelize on a GPU. Then we take advantage of constant memory and shared memory in GPU to search the key space of RC4 algorithm efficiently. Besides, we solved the bank conflict problem in shared memory to further improve the performance. Our approach was evaluated in the whole key space of 40-bit, and the results show it can complete searching of the whole key space within 12.8 hours. © 2016 IEEE.

Semi-tensor product approach to controllability and stabilizability of finite automata

Using semi-tensor product of matrices, the controllability and stabilizability of finite automata are investigated. By expressing the states, inputs, and outputs in vector forms, the transition and output functions are represented in matrix *** on this algebraic description, a necessary and sufficient condition is proposed for checking whether a state is controllable to another one. By this condition, an algorithm is established to find all the control sequences of an arbitrary length. Moreover, the stabilizability of finite automata is considered, and a necessary and sufficient condition is presented to examine whether some states can be stabilized. Finally, the study of illustrative examples verifies the correctness of the presented results/algorithms.
