In this paper, using the fuzzy theory and gray theory, a concept of the degree of fuzzy infection and a new reliability analysis method based on the relation of fuzzy infection were proposed, and the mathematical mode of series connection and parallel connection system was first set up and their rationalities were proven. An illustrational example was given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this theory. © 2005 IEEE.

The alterability of rule is studied in this paper. Two ways are put forward: one is applying the technology of data mining to get it, here the theory of rough set and flow graph are mainly used, and the other is estimating it by the experience, so impedance and attractive functions are mentioned, and two types of optimized models are put forward. These ways can enrich the theory of data mining and help people get more acknowledge and use it to facilitate decision making. © 2005 IEEE.

We present a receding horizon control algorithm for compensation of backlash at the input of a stable linear system under control rate constraints. The problem is first posed as a receding horizon optimal control problem by modelling backlash as a piecewise affine system with a state space partition consisting of three regions. This optimal control problem involves solving, at each step, 3N quadratic programmes, where N is the optimisation horizon. As an alternative to solving the quadratic programmes, we propose a strategy based on a recently devised suboptimal receding horizon control algorithm which utilises a singular value decomposition of the Hessian of the quadratic programme. This alternative strategy leads, at the cost of some performance degradation, to much smaller computational load since a feasible rather than optimal solution has to be obtained at each step. A new method based on rough set theory to classify goods is put forward in this paper. Firstly, we set up a decision table of goods classification;secondly we get some certain rules from this decision table and get a new totally disharmonious decision table by deleting the objects which can be identified by these certain rules;finally, we get the classification rules from the harmonious decision table according to the principle of minimum risk. By applying these rules, we can classify new goods into its specific class, and decide which method we should employ in the management. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate a new type of hybrid element to realize a human-friendly support device. The element is a flexible actuator (called Sponge Core Soft Rubber Actuator) and its structure is a soft mechanism in which a sponge rubber is covered with silicone rubber. In addition to its actuation capability, the element can estimate external forces by making use of the relation between inner pressure and external force. Therefore, the element can be used as a hybrid element that has both actuator and force sensor functions. This paper discusses the hybrid element design, actuator characteristics, and force control and sensing abilities of the element. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the practical effectiveness of the proposed hybrid element. © 2005 IEEE.

Recently, the capsule endoscope has been developed to observe image from the inside intestine. Such a capsule endoscope does not have locomotion or hold by it self. To get proper diagnosis and meditation, it is necessary to control capsule from outside to enable to guide locomotion. The designed and implemented capsule has feasibility to contracts the small intestine by electrical stimulus from stimulus pad. When the small intestine is contracted by electrical stimulus, the capsule can move to opposite direction which can boost moving speed of the capsule or change moving direction. The implemented stimuli capsule always monitors excessive energy transmit and automatically shut down electrical stimuli to make more secure. Also the stimuli capsule goes to stand by mode to save battery, and reset by comparator circuit which is connected to two stimulus pad. To verify the design and implement stimuli capsule, in-vitro experiments are performed with pig's small intestine.

The goal of this work is to develop a robot-assisted surgery system for spinal fusion, which is composed of a robot, a surgical planning system, and an optical tracking system. The system plays roles of assisting surgeon for inserting a pedicle screw in spinal fusion. Compared to pure navigation systems as well as conventional methods for spinal fusion, it is able to achieve better accuracy through compensating for the portending movement of the surgical area. Furthermore, the robot can position and guide needles, drills, and other surgical instruments or conducts drilling/screwing directly. In preoperative surgery, the desired entry point, orientation, and depth of surgical tools for pedicle screw insertion are determined by the surgical planning system based on CT or MR images. Intra-operatively, the position information on the surgical instruments and the targeted surgical areas are obtained by the tracking system and, using that information, a robot conducts the preplanned operation depending on its role while compensating the movement of the surgical area. Two exemplary experiments employing the developed robot-assisted surgery system are conducted. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper a novel approach to the impulsive noise removal in color images is presented. The proposed technique employs the switching scheme based on the impulse detection mechanism using the so called peer group concept. Compared to the vector median filter, the proposed technique consistently yields better results in suppressing both the random-valued and fixed-valued impulsive noise. The main advantage of the proposed noise detection framework is its enormous computational speed, which enables efficient filtering of large images in real-time applications. © 2005 IEEE.
