A key and difficult step of echo signal recognition is to extract the effective characteristic of target reflection signal. The research shows that it can limit Wigner's feature extraction for single frequency and single time. For these reasons, we have posed time-frequency analytical method based on Wigner's distribution transformation in the paper. Two kinds of targets True and False are classified by the method. We apply Fuzzy ART network to test the classification ability. When the ratio of signal and reverberation isn't less than 6 dB, the correct recognition ratio can arrive 81% to original echo signal.

A panel discussion with the title Whitherto Robust control was held during the IEEE Conference on Decision and control in Honolulu, HI, in December 1990. Organizers and Chairs were B.R. Barmish and P.P. Khargonekar, while the panelists were D.S. Bernstein, S.P. Bhattacharyya, S.P. Boyd, J.C. Doyle, I.M. Horowitz and R.E. Skelton. Today, the goals of researchers working on robust control are probably quite different than thirteen years ago. This seems true both in the progress of novel theoretic paradigms as well as in the developments of new tools required by emerging applications. This panel discussion addresses classical issues and outlines future directions within robust control. We hope that it will contribute to its growth in the years to come. The panelists’ viewpoint are presented in the next pages.

Improvement of numeral recognition using personal handwriting characteristics based on clustering

Correctly recognizing characters with peculiarities for each writer is a difficult problem. The process of absorbing variations in individual writing by creating an individual dictionary is also difficult when a writer is not specified and the total number of writers is large. In this paper the authors propose a method to improve the results of isolated character recognition in forms in which the same writer writes many characters by taking the characteristics of the writer's writing on a form as a character distribution in a character feature space. In concrete terms, the authors first perform isolated character recognition on all characters on the same form. Then, based on the results of isolated character recognition, clustering of input character groups is performed for each character category. Clusters which are very likely to include misrecognized characters from isolated character recognition are extracted based on the results of clustering. Then character categories in the extracted cluster are automatically amended based on the distance from all clusters in other categories. In the same fashion, automatic amending is performed for rejected characters. Based on experiments to evaluate handwritten numerals on OCR forms, the authors show that the precision of numeral recognition is improved by using this approach as a form of postprocessing for isolated character recognition. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to improve the pointing accuracy of a small satellite, the attitude control system is controlled with pitch-axis momentum and three-axis magnetic torquerods. The satellite dynamics equation and kinematic equation are built with the method of quaternion. For each of the three body axes, well-known PD control torque equations are adopted. Three position, three rate, and a dumping control gains are optimally found by building up the optimal attitude control model. In the model, two single objectives: the minimum of the transient time and the minimum of the sum of both the square sum of the attitude angle error and the square sum of the angle rate error are integrated into the multi objectives with multiobjective optimization method. The constraints require that the attitude angle, the angle rate, the three-axis dipole moment and the pitch wheel momentum should not exceed the required value. Finally, an application to the attitude control of a small satellite is presented as an example. Results show that the optimal control algorithm is feasible, effective, and reliable, and attitude control performance is also significantly improved after optimization, compared to the traditional PD control.

The paper investigates the closed-loop stability issue of finite-precision realizations for digital controllers implemented in floating-point arithmetic. Unlike the existing methods which only address the effect of the mantissa bits in floating-point format to the sensitivity of closed-loop stability, the sensitivity of closed-loop stability is analyzed with respect to both the mantissa and exponent bits of floating-point format. A computationally tractable finite word length (FWL) closed-loop stability measure is defined, and the optimal controller realization problem is posed as searching for a floating-point realization that maximizes the proposed measure. A numerical optimization approach is adopted to solve for the resulting optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed design procedure yields computationally efficient controller realizations with enhanced FWL closed-loop stability performance.

This paper addresses complexity and coupling issues in cooperative decision and control of distributed autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) teams. In particular, the recent results obtained by the inhouse research team are presented. Hierarchical decomposition is implemented where team vehicles are allocated to sub-teams using the set partition theory. Results are presented for single assignment and multiple assignments using the network flow and auction algorithms. Simulation results are presented for wide area search munitions where complexity and coupling are incrementally addressed in the decision system, yielding a radically improved team performance.

The proposed model is a secure system. Both sides in the communication system can depend on the proposed cryptosystem to fulfill the cryptography of the to-be-transmitted file and de-cryptograph of the cryptograph.

In this paper the robustness of the Smith predictor is discussed. An extension of the time delay tolerance is given for systems presenting an open-loop frequency response with multiple unity gain crossover frequencies. A two-degree-of-freedom decoupling scheme is proposed to independently adjust set point and load disturbance responses. Classical design tools (PI, PID) can be used to design the feedback part of the controller. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on a numerical example which shows that the nominal performance of our design is similar to the Smith predictor performance but with better robustness properties. © 2001 EUCA.

In the past, when there were few vehicles on the road, the TOD (time of day) traffic signal worked very well. The TOD signal operates on a preset signal cycling which cycles on the basis of the average number of average passenger cars in the memory device of an electric signal unit. Nowadays, with increasing vehicles on restricted roads, the conventional traffic light creates prove startup-delay time and end-lag-time. The conventional traffic light loses the function of optimal cycle, so 30-45% of the conventional traffic cycle is not matched to the present traffic cycle. We propose an electrosensitive traffic light using a fuzzy look up table method which will reduce the average vehicle waiting time and improve average vehicle speed. computer simulation results prove that reducing the average vehicle waiting time is better than than fixed signal method which doesn't consider vehicle length.
