In this paper we present a page segmentation algorithm based on mathematical morphology. Usually, text and picture regions in a document image are different in size and continuity. Making use of these distinctive differences, a set of morphology operations are applied to segment document images. The whole algorithm contains mainly two stages: coarse text extraction and post processing. Experimental results show that this algorithm performances effectively on regular document image. It is also robust to irregular images, such as degraded images and images whose picture and text are intertwined or skewed.

In the NH3·H3O-NH4Cl buffer medium of pH 11.0, in the presence of the non-ionic surfactant OP, the optimum conditions of the steady complex formed by salicylidene-5-iodo-8 aminoquinoline (SA-IAQ) with Ga(III) were studied. The maximum absorption wavelength of the complex is at 470 nm with a molar absorptivity of 1.85 × 105 L·mol-1 ·m-1. The mole ratio of Ga(III) to SAIAQ is 1 : 2. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0-400 μ g/L for Ga(III). Combined with n-butyl acetate extraction separation, the method has been applied to the determination of trace gallium in fly ash with satisfactory results.

For the purpose of predicting the danger of coal and gas outburst in mine coal layer correctly, a kind of modified BP neural network based on the VLBP and LMBP algorithm in MATLAB neural network toolbox was put forth to speed up the network convergence speed in this paper. According to the characteristics of coal and gas outburst, five key influencing factors such as excavation depth, pressure of gas, and geologic destroy degree are selected as the judging indexes of coal and gas outburst. Then the model for predicting coal and gas outburst is built. Practical application demonstrates that the modified BP prediction model based on the MATLAB neural network toolbox can overcome the disadvantages of constringency and has fast convergence speed and good prediction accuracy. The analysis and computing show that the computing speed by LMBP algorithm is faster than by VLBP algorithm but needs more memory. And the results show that the model is a very efficient prediction method for mine coal and gas outburst, compared with the popular predicting methods, and has an important practical meaning for the mine production safety.

Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is increasingly important for wheeled mobile robots (WMRs). One of the most promising approaches is the so-called particle filter (also known as sequential Monte Carlo) method. In this paper, rule based inference and multiple particle filters are integrated to diagnose hard faults of WMR's dead reckoning system. The rule based inference method is employed to determine the states of the movement of the robot in plane and each state of movement is monitored with a particle filter. This approach presents a general framework to combine domain knowledge with particle filters. The key advantage of the proposed method is that it decreases the size of the state space for each particle filter. As a result, it decreases particle number and increases efficiency and accuracy for each particle filter. Experiment performed on a mobile robot shows the improvement in accuracy and efficiency.

Dielectric photonic band gap (PBG) structures have many promising applications in laser acceleration. For these applications, accurate determination of fundamental and high order band gaps is critical. We present the results of our recent work on analytical calculations of two-dimensional (2D) PBG structures in rectangular geometry. We compare the analytical results with computer simulation results from the MIT Photonic Band Gap Structure Simulator (PBGSS) code, and discuss the convergence of the computer simulation results to the analytical results. Using the accurate analytical results, we design a mode-selective 2D dielectric cylindrical PBG cavity with the first global band gap in the frequency range of 8.8812 THz to 9.2654 THz. In this frequency range, the TM01-like mode is shown to be well confined.

In this paper, a method for calculating the quantity of heat and the temperature of indoor fires is presented, which is based on the energy equation of indoor fires and other interrelated theories. Through using some computer imitate technology, the emphasis of this paper is the curve of temperature and time on actual indoor fires for studying the varying regularity of the curve which is leaded to by the fire load, the open factor, the rate between the window's area and the total area of room, and the coefficient of conduction of heat and temperature of the wall. At last, a parameter named equivalent time is used to evaluate the damage of the construction structure, and some opinions for the prevention of building fire are presented.

Based on monitoring of blasting vibration safety of the 2nd term engineering for a tunnel in Shengzhen city, which is a newly excavated tunnel close to the existing one on the condition of small clear spacing. Blasting vibration analysis of concrete lining tunnel is described by analyzing the peak particle velocity (PPV) and its main frequency. First, it is mentioned how to settle monitoring line and position according the principles, which are the principles of the position and direction of the maximum PPV, the principle of monitoring of blasting seismic effects, and the principle of the blasting vibration waves decay. Then, the information and results of monitoring are given, in which results of blasting vibration velocity monitoring of different blasting methods are emphasized, and the attenuation formula of the PPV and explosives with distance between blasting center and monitoring position are obtained, and that the V-ρ relationship of blasting vibration is pointed out too. The results show that the maximum PPV appeared in radial direction and the position of the minimum distance between blasting center and monitoring position, and appeared in the center point of wall and the apex of arch in same section, and the main frequency is focused on 15-75 Hz which differs from various concrete linings, mainly 22-50 Hz. Finally, it is pointed out by analysis and discussion of the PPV and its main frequency of three kinds of blasting methods, which are semi-face blasting and bench stopping blasting and full-face blasting, that the PPV and its main frequency have close relation with explosive mode and distance between blasting center and monitoring position, and that degree of blasting seismic effects is affected mainly by distance and degree of blasting, and that full-face blasting is the best blasting method to control the blasting seismic effects.
