Monitoring COVID-19 environment: a real-time facial mask detection using YOLO models

Purpose: The rapid spread of COVID-19 has resulted in significant harm and impacted tens of millions of people globally. In order to prevent the transmission of the virus, individuals often wear masks as a protective measure for themselves and others. Coronavirus protection guidelines have been published by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO standards, COVID-19 can be prevented by wearing a mask in public places and congested regions. In these places, it is very difficult to personally check to see if people are wearing face masks or not. Methods: The objective of this research work is to build a powerful, efficient, and real-time approach for detecting people not wearing masks. Three cutting-edge object identification models, namely YOLOv4, Tiny-YOLOv4, and YOLOv5, are employed in this study for the identification of masked faces. Result: The proposed YOLOv5 model is evaluated using real-time images captured using a smartphone or tablet. The test images include both single and multiple people with and without masks. The YOLOv5 model achieved recognition accuracy of 88.90% with an average detection speed of 0.0316 s per image, whereas the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4 produced recognition accuracy of 82.24% and 74.80% with an average detection speed of 0.0530 s and 0.0541 s per image, respectively. Conclusion: The comparative performance suggests that the YOLOv5 model has a maximum recognition accuracy of 88.90% in face mask identification tasks compared to other models such as the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering 2025.

Multi-Task Chinese Speech Recognition Method Based on the Squeezeformer Model

End-to-end training has emerged as a prominent trend in speech recognition, with Conformer models effectively integrating Transformer and CNN architectures. However, their complexity and high computational cost pose deployment challenges. To address these issues, we propose a multi-task Chinese speech recognition method based on the Squeezeformer model. We replace the FMCF structure in Conformer with an MF/CF structure, leveraging the convolutional module as a local Multi- Head Attention (MHA) module to enhance efficiency. Multilevel down-sampling and up-sampling using a time-series U-Net further reduce computational costs. By eliminating redundant LayerNorm layers and employing depthwise separable convolutions, we streamline the model, reduce parameters, and lower deployment costs. An Adaptor Layer is integrated into the MHSA module to mitigate the vanishing gradient problem, and a ScaleVar Layer is added to enhance flexibility. Additionally, the RealFormer module is introduced on the decoding side to improve context understanding. Combining Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) with attention-based encoding and decoding models for multi-task learning improves performance and accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the parameters on AISHELL-1 dataset by 16% and reduces the character error rate to 5.50%. Explainable Business Process Remaining Time Prediction Using Reachability Graph

With the recent advances in the field of deep learning, an increasing number of deep neural networks have been applied to business process prediction tasks, remaining time prediction, to obtain more accurate predictive results. However, existing time prediction methods based on deep learning have poor interpretability, an explainable business process remaining time prediction method is proposed using reachability graph,which consists of prediction model construction and visualization. For prediction models, a Petri net is mined and the reachability graph is constructed to obtain the transition occurrence vector. Then, prefixes and corresponding suffixes are generated to cluster into different transition partitions according to transition occurrence vector. Next,the bidirectional recurrent neural network with attention is applied to each transition partition to encode the prefixes, and the deep transfer learning between different transition partitions is performed. For the visualization of prediction models, the evaluation values are added to the sub-processes of a Petri net to realize the visualization of the prediction models. Finally, the proposed method is validated by publicly available event logs.

Privacy-Preserving Knowledge Distillation in Latency-Critical Federated Task Offloading for Consumer IoT Networks

Along with the explosive demand for massive data computation, federated local-edge-cloud computing enables many IoT task offloading processes and has recently gained widespread attention in consumer-centric healthcare. However, existing approaches for latency-critical task offloading do not pay sufficient attention to patient privacy data and thus are far from being ready for large-scale practical deployment. In this paper, a novel local-edge-cloud based federated learning framework with one-way knowledge distillation for latency-critical and security-aware task offloading is proposed, while a task offloading scheme based on deep reinforcement learning is presented. Then, based on the consideration of privacy guarantees, computing resources and offloading decisions, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the overall latency of all tasks for local medical devices. Additionally, a pseudo-task mechanism is adopted in the federated framework for the uploaded weights to aggregate the models on the edges and the cloud. Besides, a one-way knowledge distillation mechanism is proposed to transfer knowledge from a teacher model to student models, which compresses the network parameters and reduces the model latency. Finally, experiments based on Chest X-Ray Images of Pneumonia are conducted for corroborating the theoretical results. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Underwater Biological Target Detection Algorithm and Research Based on YOLOv7 Algorithm

Underwater target detection is an important method for detecting marine organisms. However, due to the image occlusion of underwater targets, blurred water quality, poor lighting conditions, small targets, and complex backgrounds, the detection of underwater biological targets has posed significant challenges. In the intricate underwater environment, the conventional feature extraction method has a few drawbacks, including imprecise feature extraction, sluggish detection speed, and inadequate robustness. Consequently, an underwater target detection method based on the enhanced You Only Look Once 7 (YOLOv7) is proposed in this study. The network architecture is reconstructed, and the Deformable Convolutional Network (DCN) modules replace some 3×3 convolutional blocks in the ELAN structure to offset sampling points and reduce background interference. Skip connections and 1× 1 convolutional architecture are added to the DCN module to improve the model’s perception of image details. In addition, Contextual Transformer 3 (COT3) is also incorporated to improve visual performance. Finally, to improve the detection efficiency of small objects, the CIoU loss function is finally replaced by the Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) algorithm. The mAP of DCCN-YOLOv7 on the URPC dataset is 80.4%, according to the experimental results, 2.8% higher than the YOLOv7 network model that is used as a baseline. Furthermore, in contrast to the original YOLOv7 algorithm, the detection speed and accuracy are higher, making it more appropriate for target recognition underwater. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). This systematic review gave special attention to diabetes and the advancements in food and nutrition needed to prevent or manage diabetes in all its forms. There are two main forms of diabetes mellitus: Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D). The loss of beta cells brought on by an autoimmune reaction causes the pancreas to be unable to produce enough insulin, which leads to Type 1 diabetes. A deficiency of insulin could arise as the illness worsens. The most frequent cause is a combination of excessive body weight and inadequate exercise. Currently, 90–95% of patients have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Age-specific normal blood sugar ranges exist and knowing them is crucial for determining a target blood sugar level that is both healthy and appropriate. The main takeaway is that diet regimens ought to be tailored to the patient’s requirements and should account for their capacity for change. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that have the biggest impact on the rise in blood glucose. In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for glucose monitoring and diet recommendations for diabetic patients using fog computing. A paradigm known as fog computing makes use of the benefits that come from using both cloud and edge devices to support modern computing systems by offering high-quality services, cutting latency, facilitating mobility, supporting multi-tenancy, and many other features. © 2025 by Begell House, Inc.

An optimized congestion control protocol in cellular network for improving quality of service

In recent decades, Cellular Networks (CN) have been used broadly in communication technologies. The most critical challenge in the CN was congestion control due to the distributed mobile environment. Some approaches, like mobile edge computing, congesting controlling systems, machine learning, and heuristic models, have failed to prevent congestion in CN. The reason for this problem is the lack of continuous monitoring function at every time interval. So, in this present study, a novel Golden Eagle-based Primal–dual Congestion Management (GEbPDCM) has been developed for the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Ad hoc On-demand Vector (AODV) network. Here, the Golden Eagle function features will afford the continuous monitoring function to monitor data congestion. Hence, the main objective of this research is to improve the Quality of service (QoS) by optimizing congestion controls. Here, the QoS is measured by different metrics, such as delay, packet delivery ratio (PDR), throughput, packet loss, and energy consumption. Initially, the nodes were created in the MATLAB environment, and the GEbPDCM was activated to predict the data load and estimate the node density to measure the node status. Then, the high data overload was migrated to another free status node to control congestion. Finally, the proposed model efficiency was measured regarding delay, packet delivery ratio (PDR), throughput, packet loss, and energy consumption. The proposed model has scored high throughput at 97.1 Mbps and 97.1 PDR, reducing delay to 67.4 ms and 50.6 mJ energy consumption.
