A recent study revealed that fake articles spread considerably faster than factual content on Twitter, specifically at a 70% higher rate of retweets and reaching the first 1,500 users six times faster. This highlights the urgent need for scalable automated detection solutions to combat the pervasive threat of fake news online. While machine learning methods often rely solely on semantic text analysis, evolving fake news campaigns mimic genuine news, employing tactics like bot networks and sophisticated language imitation. This renders text-based meth- ods increasingly vulnerable. To address this challenge,we propose a heterogeneous deep learning model that incorporates richer information beyond text, specifically dissemination structure features from social networks. These features capture aspects like user interactions, sharing patterns, and network topology, providing valuable insights into the spread of information. Our model leverages the sentiment and affects the enriched Alt dataset for text analysis. Instead of using a popular language model called BERT, we explore alternative pre-trained language models like the Sentence Transformer, which focuses on capturing con- textual sentence embeddings, or the Universal Language Model (ULMFiT), which excels at understanding semantic relationships within text. Additionally, we consider spaCy, a versatile NLP library offering similar functionalities for text processing and feature extraction. While The Quint Dataset Challenge Dataset lacks sentiment annotations, it could be a potential alternative to Alt depending on research goals. This network-aware approach achieves an impressive 95.27% accuracy on The Boom Live dataset and demonstrates generalizability to The Quint dataset with 92.1% accuracy, highlighting its effectiveness in combatting evolving fake news tactics. © 2024 IEEE.

Passive-state preparation for quantum secure direct communication

Quantum secure direct communication(QSDC)can transmit the secret message ***-photon-based QSDC protocol requires the active modulation of the quantum state of the source,potentially introducing various side-channel *** this paper,we propose a passive-state preparation QSDC *** utilizing a passive-state preparation method,we remove the need for active modulation,thus eliminating the side-channel risks associated with the source *** evaluate the performance of the protocol,we develop a system model and improve the decoy state *** parameter optimization,we identify the optimal secrecy message capacity for various communication distances and compare it with active modulation *** a communication distance of 10(15)km,the secrecy message capacity of passive-state preparation QSDC reaches3.894×10^(-4)(3.715×10^(-5))bit/pulse,achieving 95.3%(91.5%)of the active case’s ***,we consider the resource consumption and optimize the secrecy message transmission rate of passive-state preparation *** a coherent light source with a frequency of 10^(6)Hz,at communication distances of 5,10,and 15 km,the secrecy message transmission rates for passive-state preparation QSDC reach 2.370×10^(2),4.218×10,and 2.504 bit/s,respectively.

One of themost prominent research areas in information technology is the Internet of Things (IoT) as its applications are widely used, such as structural monitoring, health care management systems, agriculture and battlefield management, and so on. Due to its self-organizing network and simple installation of the network, the researchers have been attracted to pursue research in the various fields of IoTs. However, a huge amount of work has been addressed on various problems confronted by IoT. The nodes densely deploy over critical environments and those are operated on tiny batteries. Moreover, the replacement of dead batteries in the nodes is almost impractical. Therefore, the problem of energy preservation and maximization of IoT networks has become the most prominent research area. However, numerous state-of-The-Art algorithms have addressed this issue. Thus, it has become necessary to gather the information and send it to the base station in an optimized method to maximize the network. Therefore, in this article, we propose a novel quantum-informed ant colony optimization (ACO) routing algorithm with the efficient encoding scheme of cluster head selection and derivation of information heuristic factors. The algorithm has been tested by simulation for various network scenarios. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm show its efficacy over a few existing evolutionary algorithms using various performance metrics, such as residual energy of the network, network lifetime, and the number of live IoT nodes. Impact Statement-Toward IoT-based applications, here we presented the Quantum-inspired ACO clustering algorithm for network lifetime. IoT nodes in the clustering phase choose theirCH through the distance between cluster member IoT nodes and the residual energy. Thus, CH selection reduces the energy consumption of member IoT nodes. Modified Bat Algorithm: a newly proposed approach for solving complex and real-world problems

Bat Algorithm (BA) is a nature-inspired metaheuristic search algorithm designed to efficiently explore complex problem spaces and find near-optimal solutions. The algorithm is inspired by the echolocation behavior of bats, which acts as a signal system to estimate the distance and hunt prey. Although the BA has proven effective for various optimization problems, it exhibits limited exploration ability and susceptibility to local optima. The algorithm updates velocities and positions based on the current global best solution, causing all agents to converge toward a specific location, potentially leading to local optima issues in optimization problems. On this premise, this paper proposes the Modified Bat Algorithm (MBA) as an enhancement to address the local optima limitation observed in the original BA. MBA incorporates the frequency and velocity of the current best solution, enhancing convergence speed to the optimal solution and preventing local optima entrapment. While the original BA faces diversity issues, both the original BA and MBA are introduced. To assess MBA’s performance, three sets of test functions (classical benchmark functions, CEC2005, and CEC2019) are employed, with results compared to those of the original BA, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Dragonfly Algorithm (DA). The outcomes demonstrate the MBA’s significant superiority over other algorithms. In addition, MBA successfully addresses a real-world assignment problem (call center problem), traditionally solved using linear programming methods, with satisfactory results. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Nonreciprocal wide-angle bidirectional absorber based on one-dimensional magnetized gyromagnetic photonic crystals

We propose magnetized gyromagnetic photonic crystals(MGPCs)composed of indium antimonide(InSb)and yttrium iron garnet ferrite(YIGF)layers,which possess the properties of nonreciprocal wide-angle bidirectional *** defects in the MGPCs work as *** bands(ABs)for the positive and negative propagations arise from the optical Tamm state and resonance in cavities respectively,and they prove to share no overlaps in the studied frequency ***ω=2.0138 THz,for the positive propagation,the ABs in the high-frequency range are localized in the interval between 0.66ωand 0.88ω.In the angular range,the ABs for the TE and TM waves reach 60°and 51°,*** the negative propagation,the ABs in the low-frequency range are localized in the interval between 0.13ωand 0.3ω.The AB s extend to 60°for the TE waves and 80.4°for the TM *** also exists a narrow frequency band in a lower frequency *** relevant factors,which include the external temperature,the magnetic fields applied to the YIGF,the refractive index of the impedance matching layer,and the defect thickness,are adjusted to investigate the effects on the *** the numerical simulations are based on the transfer matrix *** work provides an approach to designs of isolators and so on.

A hybrid convolutional neural network and support vector machine classifier for Amharic character recognition

Optical character recognition is a way of converting scanned images of printed or handwritten documents into machine-encoded text, making it easier to store, browse, retrieve, and process electronic data. In this research, a Printed Amharic Characters Recognition dataset is prepared to train and test a model. Images in the dataset only contain 231 basic Amharic characters that are normalized to 32 × 32 pixels. In this work, a hybrid model of the two super classifiers is developed: the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the support vector machine (SVM). In this novel hybrid CNN-SVM model, CNN works as an automatic feature extractor from the raw images, and then, the extracted feature vectors are given as input to SVM for classification and recognition. A 99.84% accuracy was achieved on the own-prepared dataset and 95.59% accuracy on the benchmark Amharic Optical Character Recognition Database in classifying the testing dataset images. The proposed hybrid CNN-SVM model gave better results than the CNN with a fully connected layer. Moreover, the proposed model outperforms previously existing works attempted by others to recognize printed Amharic characters on the same and different datasets. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
