Frequent road incidents cause significant physical harm and economic losses globally. The key to ensuring road safety lies in accurately perceiving surrounding road incidents. However, the highly dynamic nature of traffic introduces significant challenges, particularly in detecting sudden and temporary incidents. In this article, we propose a novel detection framework, multihead attention ResNet with dynamic bottleneck (DB_RESNET_MHA), to identify physical unsigned road incidents. Our approach introduces three key innovations. First, we develop a tailored data augmentation strategy to create images that closely mimic the complex variations found in real-world road environments. Second, we enhance model expressiveness by employing attention mechanisms to nonlinearly integrate convolutional kernels within the residual network. Furthermore, we refine the prediction head by applying spatially distinct attention weights, enabling the model to capture intricate correlations between different features more effectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we create a dataset for unsigned road incidents (UnsignRI), comprising a total of 16 323 images that capture 12 distinct types of incidents. It stands out as the most comprehensive dataset in the field, encompassing a wide range of geographical features and incident categories. Experimental results show that DB_RESNET_MHA achieves an average accuracy of 96.2% and a f1-score of 0.955 across various categories of unsigned incidents, surpassing other models. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper addresses the challenge of enhancing the quality of medical data interpretation, specifically using color microscopic medical images for effective visualization and further analysis. The method employed involves increasing contrast by adjusting the brightness intensity values within the Lab color model, which also considers the reference white point for horizontal light. To determine the parameters for the contrasting procedure, two strategies for selecting gamma correction of the input image are explored, based on the dynamics of the resulting image quality for various no-reference quality metrics. By analyzing these dynamics, the choice of correction conditions for the contrasting procedure can be justified, rather than relying on static metrics. The paper investigates the application of these proposed strategies on different types of images, presents a formal generalization of the strategies for selecting correction parameters, and offers practical recommendations for their use.

With the rapid development of document digitization, people have become accustomed to capturing and processing documents using electronic devices such as smartphones. However, the captured document images often suffer from issues like shadows and noise due to environmental factors, which can affect their readability. To improve the quality of captured document images, researchers have proposed a series of models or frameworks and applied them in distinct scenarios such as image enhancement, and document information extraction. In this paper, we primarily focus on shadow removal methods and open-source datasets. We concentrate on recent advancements in this area, first organizing and analyzing nine available datasets. Then, the methods are categorized into conventional methods and neural network-based methods. Conventional methods use manually designed features and include shadow map-based approaches and illumination-based approaches. Neural network-based methods automatically generate features from data and are divided into single-stage approaches and multi-stage approaches. We detail representative algorithms and briefly describe some typical techniques. Finally, we analyze and discuss experimental results, identifying the limitations of datasets and methods. Future research directions are discussed, and nine suggestions for shadow removal from document images are proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first survey of shadow removal methods and related datasets from document images.

CTNet: A Convolutional Transformer Network for Color Image Steganalysis

Compared with convolutional neural network (CNN), Transformer can obtain global receptive field features more effectively and has recently achieved great success in natural language processing and computer vision. Due to the particularity of steganography, however, almost all existing steganalytic networks just employ CNN with local receptive fields to detect embedding artifacts. In this paper, we propose a novel convolutional Transformer network for color image steganalysis. Specifically, we firstly obtain various image residuals for each color channel of an input image in the pre-processing module. To capture more comprehensive steganalytic features, the truncated residuals after channel concatenation will pass through a feature extraction module composed of a CNN group and a Transformer group. The CNN group aims to extract local receptive fields features, while the Transformer group with multi-head self-attention as the key tries to extract global steganalytic features. Finally, we employ a global covariance pooling (GCP) and two fully-connected (FC) layers with dropout for classification. Extensive comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the detection performances in color image steganalysis and achieve state-of-the-art results. Although the proposed method is originally designed for color images, it can also obtain competitive results for grayscale images compared with the current best detector. In addition, we provide numerous ablation studies to verify the rationality of the proposed network architecture. © Institute of Computing technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences 2025.

Interpersonal relationship quality is pivotal in social and occupational contexts. Existing analysis of interpersonal relationships mostly rely on subjective self-reports, whereas objective quantification remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel social relationship analysis framework using spatio-temporal patterns derived from dyadic EEG signals, which can be applied to quantitatively measure team cooperation in corporate team building, and evaluate interpersonal dynamics between therapists and patients in psychiatric therapy. First, we constructed a dyadic-EEG dataset from 72 pairs of participants with two relationships (stranger or friend) when watching emotional videos simultaneously. Then we proposed a deep neural network on dyadic-subject EEG signals, in which we combine the dynamic graph convolutional neural network for characterizing the interpersonal relationships among the EEG channels and 1-dimension convolution for extracting the information from the time sequence. To obtain the feature vectors from two EEG recordings that well represent the relationship of two subjects, we integrate deep canonical correlation analysis and triplet loss for training the network. Experimental results show that the social relationship type (stranger or friend) between two individuals can be effectively identified through their EEG data. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This paper proposes an improved cyber-physical false information detection model based on cross-modal ambiguous learning. This work introduced the IC2 LFD model with an emphasis on ‘text-image’ ambiguity, focusing on the main goal of intelligent multi-cross modal data fake information identification. The experiment revealed that the significance of text and images differs in intelligent multi-cross modal data fake information detection. The effectiveness of the model is verified on the twitter dataset, showing a 6% accuracy improvement compared to the baseline model and a 1.6% performance improvement over detection methods without dynamic weight allocation. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

EEG-based fatigue monitoring can effectively reduce the incidence of related traffic accidents. In the past decade, with the advancement of deep learning, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been increasingly used for EEG signal processing. However, due to the data’s non-Euclidean characteristics, existing CNNs may lose important spatial information from EEG, specifically channel correlation. Thus, we propose the node-holistic graph convolutional network (NHGNet), a model that uses graphic convolution to dynamically learn each channel’s features. With exact fit attention optimization, the network captures inter-channel correlations through a trainable adjacency matrix. The interpretability is enhanced by revealing critical areas of brain activity and their interrelations in various mental states. In validations on two public datasets, NHGNet outperforms the SOTAs. Specifically, in the intra-subject, NHGNet improved detection accuracy by at least 2.34% and 3.42%, and in the inter-subjects, it improved by at least 2.09% and 15.06%. Visualization research on the model revealed that the central parietal area plays an important role in detecting fatigue levels, whereas the frontal and temporal lobes are essential for maintaining vigilance. Coherent Photon Mapping on the Intel MIC Architecture

Photon mapping is a global illumination algorithm which is composed of two steps： photon tracing and photon searching. During photon searching step, each shading point needs to search the photon-tree to find k-neighbouring photons for reflected radiance estimation. As the number of shading points and the size of photon-tree are dramatically large, the photon searching step is time consuming. We propose a parallel photon searching algorithm by using radiance estimation approach for coherent shading points on the Intel Many Integrated Core （MIC） Architecture. In order to efficiently use single instruction multiple data （SIMD） units, shading points are clustered by similarity first （every cluster contains 16 shading-points）, and an initial neighbouring scope is searched from the photon-tree for each cluster. Then we use 16-wide SIMD units by performing k-NN searching from the initial neighbouring scope for those 16 shading-points in a cluster in parallel. We use the method to simulate some global illumination scenes on Intel Xeon processors and Intel Xeon Phi^TM coprocessors. The comparison results with existing photon mapping techniques indicate that our method gives significant improvement in speed with the same accuracy.

Improved locality-sensitive hashing method for the approximate nearest neighbor problem

In recent years, the nearest neighbor search （NNS） problem has been widely used in various interesting applications. Locality-sensitive hashing （LSH）, a popular algorithm for the approximate nearest neighbor problem, is proved to be an efficient method to solve the NNS problem in the high-dimensional and large-scale databases. Based on the scheme of p-stable LSH, this paper introduces a novel improvement algorithm called randomness-based locality-sensitive hashing （RLSH） based on p-stable LSH. Our proposed algorithm modifies the query strategy that it randomly selects a certain hash table to project the query point instead of mapping the query point into all hash tables in the period of the nearest neighbor query and reconstructs the candidate points for finding the nearest neighbors. This improvement strategy ensures that RLSH spends less time searching for the nearest neighbors than the p-stable LSH algorithm to keep a high recall. Besides, this strategy is proved to promote the diversity of the candidate points even with fewer hash tables. Experiments are executed on the synthetic dataset and open dataset. The results show that our method can cost less time consumption and less space requirements than the p-stable LSH while balancing the same recall.
