The paper investigates the closed-loop stability issue of finite-precision realizations for digital controllers implemented in floating-point arithmetic. Unlike the existing methods which only address the effect of the mantissa bits in floating-point format to the sensitivity of closed-loop stability, the sensitivity of closed-loop stability is analyzed with respect to both the mantissa and exponent bits of floating-point format. A computationally tractable finite word length (FWL) closed-loop stability measure is defined, and the optimal controller realization problem is posed as searching for a floating-point realization that maximizes the proposed measure. A numerical optimization approach is adopted to solve for the resulting optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed design procedure yields computationally efficient controller realizations with enhanced FWL closed-loop stability performance.

In order to improve the pointing accuracy of a small satellite, the attitude control system is controlled with pitch-axis momentum and three-axis magnetic torquerods. The satellite dynamics equation and kinematic equation are built with the method of quaternion. For each of the three body axes, well-known PD control torque equations are adopted. Three position, three rate, and a dumping control gains are optimally found by building up the optimal attitude control model. In the model, two single objectives: the minimum of the transient time and the minimum of the sum of both the square sum of the attitude angle error and the square sum of the angle rate error are integrated into the multi objectives with multiobjective optimization method. The constraints require that the attitude angle, the angle rate, the three-axis dipole moment and the pitch wheel momentum should not exceed the required value. Finally, an application to the attitude control of a small satellite is presented as an example. Results show that the optimal control algorithm is feasible, effective, and reliable, and attitude control performance is also significantly improved after optimization, compared to the traditional PD control.

This paper addresses complexity and coupling issues in cooperative decision and control of distributed autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) teams. In particular, the recent results obtained by the inhouse research team are presented. Hierarchical decomposition is implemented where team vehicles are allocated to sub-teams using the set partition theory. Results are presented for single assignment and multiple assignments using the network flow and auction algorithms. Simulation results are presented for wide area search munitions where complexity and coupling are incrementally addressed in the decision system, yielding a radically improved team performance.

In order to detect small reverse-side cracks existing on 5 mm thick steel plates, we have measured strength of residual magnetization at 1 mm above 5 mm thick steel plates. A differential type magneto-impedance effect sensor (a gradio-MI sensor) is applied to measure it. Because the gradio-MI sensor is suitable for detection of localized micro magnetic field. From results of our experiments, a distribution of the residual differential magnetic field at 1 mm above a specimen is clearly changed near a reverse-side crack of 1 mm depth with 5 mm length. In this paper, experimental results utilizing the distribution of a residual differential magnetic field measured by gradio-MI sensors is shown. And, validity of the residual magnetic field method for inspection of small reverse-side cracks on thick steel plates is discussed.

In the past, when there were few vehicles on the road, the TOD (time of day) traffic signal worked very well. The TOD signal operates on a preset signal cycling which cycles on the basis of the average number of average passenger cars in the memory device of an electric signal unit. Nowadays, with increasing vehicles on restricted roads, the conventional traffic light creates prove startup-delay time and end-lag-time. The conventional traffic light loses the function of optimal cycle, so 30-45% of the conventional traffic cycle is not matched to the present traffic cycle. We propose an electrosensitive traffic light using a fuzzy look up table method which will reduce the average vehicle waiting time and improve average vehicle speed. computer simulation results prove that reducing the average vehicle waiting time is better than than fixed signal method which doesn't consider vehicle length.
