An Efficient Algorithm for the 2-Central Path Problem

In this paper we consider the following 2-Central Path Problem (2CPP): Given a set of m polygonal curves = {P1,P2,...,Pm} in the plane, find two curves Pu and Pl, called 2-central paths, that best represent all curves in . Despite its theoretical interest and a wide range of practical applications, 2CPP has not been well studied. In this paper, we first establish criteria that Pu and Pl ought to meet in order for them to best represent . In particular, we require that there exists parametrizations fu(t) and fl(t) (t [a,b]) of Pu and Pl respectively such that the maximum distance from {fu(t),fl(t)} to curves in is minimized. Then an efficient algorithm is presented to solve 2CPP under certain realistic assumptions. Our algorithm constructs Pu and Pl in O(nmlog⁴n2^α(n)α(n)) time, where n is the total complexity of (i.e., the total number of vertices and edges), m is the number of curves in , and α(n) is the inverse Ackermann function. Our algorithm uses parametric search technique and is considerably faster than arrangement-related algorithms (i.e. ω(n²)) when m ≪ n as in most real applications.

Federated Learning (FL) has significant potential to protect data privacy and mitigate network burden in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. However, due to the system and data heterogeneity of mobile clients (MCs), client selection and bandwidth allocation is key for achieving cost-efficient FL in MEC networks with limited bandwidth. To address these challenges, we investigate the issue of joint client selection and bandwidth allocation for reducing the cost (i.e., latency and energy consumption) of FL training. We formulate the problem and decompose it into a holistic subproblem to reduce the number of rounds and a partial subproblem to reduce the costs of FL each round. We propose a joint class-balanced client selection and bandwidth allocation (CBCSBA) framework to address the whole problem. Specifically, for the holistic subproblem, CBCSBA combines MCs into groups, each having data distribution as close as possible to class-balanced distribution;For the partial subproblem, CBCSBA reduces costs by exploratively selecting a group and sequentially optimizing the latency and energy consumption of MCs within the group. Experimental results show that CBCSBA outperforms the baseline frameworks in reducing latency by 28.2% and energy consumption by 25.3% on average in the considered four datasets. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The concept of fog networking has been introduced to provide Cloud-based services to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. One of the crucial tasks in this paradigm is network telemetry, which plays a vital role in ensuring comprehensive monitoring and management. It helps in coordinating the fog resources between the cloud services and the IoT devices, thus ensuring efficient and effective operations of the entire system. However, the existing network measurement still exhibits some drawbacks, such as a lack of measurement granularities and excessive bandwidth overhead. In the fog network, it remains undefined how to achieve network-wide performance between any links. In this work, We propose FogEye, a network-wide performance telemetry system applied in the fog network. Additionally, we propose a Hierholzer-based algorithm for graph coverage. It effectively reduces the telemetry overhead while ensuring accurate measurement. We conduct experiments in an actual enterprise cloud environment. The result shows that our algorithm can reduce at least 20% of probing packets. FogEye allows operators to query network performance for any link, achieving more cost-efficient traffic monitoring and management under centralized network control. © 2023 IEEE.

When an individual’s behavior has rational characteristics, this may lead to irrational collective actions for the group. A wide range of organisms from animals to humans often evolve the social attribute of cooperation to meet this challenge. Therefore, cooperation among individuals is of great significance for allowing social organisms to adapt to changes in the natural environment. Based on multi-agent reinforcement learning, we propose a learning strategy for achieving coordination by incorporating a simple learning rate model that can balance exploration and exploitation. We demonstrate that agents that use the strategy improve a relatively collective return in a decision task called the intertemporal social dilemma, where the conflict between the individual and the group is particularly sharp. We also explore the effects of the diversity of learning rates on the population of reinforcement learning agents and show that agents trained in heterogeneous populations develop particularly coordinated policies relative to those trained in homogeneous populations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2023.

RLDR: Reinforcement Learning-Based Fast Data Recovery in Cloud-of-Clouds Storage Systems

Cloud-of-clouds storage systems are widely used in online applications, where user data are encrypted, encoded, and stored in multiple clouds. When some cloud nodes fail, the storage systems can reconstruct the lost data and store it in the substitute nodes. It is a challenge to reduce the latency of data recovery to ensure data reliability. In this paper, we adopt a Reinforcement Learning-based Data Recovery (RLDR) approach to reduce the regeneration time. By employing the Monte-Carlo method, our approach can construct the tree-topology-based regeneration process, a.k.a. regeneration tree, to effectively reduce the regeneration time. Through rigorous analysis, we apply the information flow graph to optimize the inter-cloud traffic for a given regeneration tree. To verify the merit of RLDR, We conduct extensive experiments on real-world traces. Experiments demonstrate that RLDR can significantly accelerate the regeneration process. Specifically, RLDR can reduce the regeneration time by up to 92% and increase the throughput by up to twelve-fold, compared to the prior art. © 2013 IEEE.

The rapid advancements in time-series forecasting have led to the emergence of datasets with increasingly diverse characteristics. Researchers typically focus on designing robust algorithms to handle these datasets. However, model performance can vary across different datasets. Existing studies commonly use Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Squared Error (MSE) to evaluate model performance. These metrics often need to fully account for the impact of dataset quality on forecast accuracy and reliability, leading to insufficient explanations of model forecasts and even dataset dependence. Furthermore, the lack of dataset evaluation makes it difficult to determine whether forecast results are influenced by data characteristics or model architecture, significantly hindering model improvement. To address this problem, this study proposes a new dataset evaluation paradigm-Multiscale Temporal Entropy Evaluation Paradigm. This paradigm aims to tackle the problem of data feature ambiguity affecting model forecast interpretability. By evaluating nine time-series datasets from domains such as weather, economics, transportation, and networks and comparing these evaluations with the forecast results from six different models, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of this method in explaining the relationship between dataset features and model performance. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2025.

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) necessitates efficient resource management to meet the growing demands for high data rates, low latency, and real-time communication in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This paper presents a novel multiagent reinforcement learning framework based on the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm for optimizing resource allocation in clusters of cells within IoV networks. The framework dynamically allocates transmission power and bandwidth across base stations, each acting as a collaborative agent. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the multi-agent PPO approach outperforms other reinforcement learning algorithms, including Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) and Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), regarding throughput, power efficiency, dynamic bandwidth allocation, and overall network performance. © 2024 IEEE.
