Joint Feature Encoding and Task Alignment Mechanism for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction

A screening model for predicting the potential of soil colloids-enhanced leaching of hydrophobic organic contaminants to groundwater at contaminated sites

Modeling the fate and transport of organic pollutants at contaminated sites is critical for risk assessment and management practices,such as establishing realistic cleanup standards or remediation *** the conventional wisdom that highly hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants(POPs)(e.g.,polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)in surface soils are essentially immobile,mounting evidence has demonstrated the potential of these contaminants leaching into the groundwater,due to enhanced transport by soil ***,we develop a Colloids-Enhanced Transport(CET)model,which can be used as a simple screening tool to predict the leaching potential of POPs into groundwater,as mediated by soil *** CET model incorporates several processes,including the release of POPs-bearing colloids into the porewater,the vertical transport of colloids and associated POPs in the vadose zone,themixing of POPs-containing soil leachate with groundwater,and the migration of POPs-bearing colloids in saturated ***,using parameters that can be easily obtained(e.g.,annual rainfall,soil type,and common hydrogeological properties of the subsurface porous media),the CET model can estimate the concentrations of POPs in the saturated zone from the observed POPs concentrations in surface or shallow subsurface *** CET model can also be used to derive soil quality standards or cleanup endpoints by back-calculating soil concentrations based on groundwater protection limits.

Polybromodiphenyl ethers(PBDEs),the widely used flame retardants,are common contaminants in surface soils at e-waste recycling *** association of PBDEs with soil colloids has been observed,indicating the potential risk to groundwater due to colloid-facilitated ***,the extent to which soil colloidsmay enhance the spreading of PBDEs in groundwater is largely ***,we report the co-transport of decabromodiphenyl ester(BDE-209)and soil colloids in saturated porous *** colloids released froma soil sample collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin,China,contain high concentration of PBDEs,with BDE-209 being the most abundant conger(320±30 mg/kg).The colloids exhibit relatively high mobility in saturated sand columns,under conditions commonly observed in groundwater ***,under all the tested conditions(i.e.,varying flow velocity,pH,ionic species and ionic strength),the mass of eluted BDE-209 correlates linearly with that of eluted soil colloids,even though the mobility of the colloids varies markedly depending on the specific hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions ***,the mass of BDE-209 retained in the columns also correlates strongly with themass of retained ***,the PBDEs remain bound to soil colloids during transport in porous *** in this study indicate that soil colloidsmay significantly promote the transport of PBDEs in groundwater by serving as an effective *** might be the reason why the highly insoluble and adsorptive PBDEs are found in groundwater at some PBDE-contaminated sites.

Preferential association of PBDEs and PAHs with mineral particles *** organic carbon:Implications for groundwater contamination at e-waste sites

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers(PBDEs)and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are commonly detected contaminants at e-waste recycling *** the conventional wisdom that PBDEs and PAHs are highly immobile and persist primarily in shallowsurface soils,increasing evidence shows that these compounds can leach into the ***,we compare the leachabilities of PBDEs *** from contaminated soils collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin,*** amounts of BDE-209(0.3–2 ng/L)and phenanthrene(42–106 ng/L),the most abundant PBDE and PAH at the site,are detected in the effluents of columns packed with contaminated soils,with the specific concentrations varying with hydrodynamic and solution chemistry ***,the leaching potential of BDE-209 appears to be closely related to the release of colloidal mineral particles,whereas the leachability of phenanthrene correlates well with the concentration of dissolved organic carbon in the effluent,but showing essentially no correlation with the concentration of mineral *** surprisingly different trends of the leachability observed between BDE-209 and phenanthrene is counterintuitive,as PBDEs and PAHs often co-exist at e-waste recycling sites(particularly at the sites wherein incineration is being practiced)and share many similarities in terms of physicochemical *** possible explanation is that due to its extremely low solubility,BDE-209 predominantly exists in free-phase(i.e.,as solid(nano)particles),whereas the more soluble phenanthrene is mainly sorbed to soil organic *** in this study underscore the need to better understand the mobility of highly hydrophobic organic contaminants at contaminated sites for improved risk management.

Using join learning of multi-level features for automated essay scoring

Recently, the approach of extracting features of essays at different levels for joint learning and scoring using hybrid models has achieved excellent results. However, there are still some issues that need to be improved: (1) Splitting the essays into sentences of the same length when extracting sentence-level features may result in the truncation of sentence-level semantics;(2) multi-level representations of essays obtained through pre-trained language models (PLMs) are not sufficiently comprehensive and in depth to provide limited improvement in model performance;and (3) in extracting features from multi-level essay representations, finer-grained local features in sentences and dependencies among features are ignored. To address these issues, we propose an improved method for joint learning of multi-level features based on PLMs. Specifically, we first split the essays according to different semantic scales through a text splitter to maximize the retention of semantic and structural features at sentence level;secondly, we integrate the essay representations derived from the PLM and mine more comprehensive and deeper multi-level features from it;and finally, we aggregate sentence-level features and construct dependencies among them by a feature extraction fusion method. The value of average quadratic weighted kappa (QWK) on the Kaggle ASAP competition dataset is 0.809, which validates the effectiveness of our proposed method in the automated essay scoring (AES) task. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Harnessing Trend Theory to Enhance Distributed Proximal Point Algorithm Approaches for Multi-Area Economic Dispatch Optimization

This article proposes an approach to addressing the problem of minimum initial marking (MuIM) estimation for labeled Petri nets (LPNs). We introduce the important concept of a label synthesis net for LPNs and develop a method for predicting the minimum number of tokens. By using this prediction method, we develop an algorithm that has polynomial complexity in the length of the observed label sequence for estimating MuIMs. An illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach. Moreover, experimental results demonstrate its advantage over existing work. Finally, we provide a comparison of some representative studies in the literature for MuIM estimation. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Neuroadaptive Containment control for Nonlinear Multiagent Systems With Input Saturation: An Event-Triggered Communication Approach

In this article, a neuroadaptive event-triggered containment control strategy combined with the dynamic surface control (DSC) approach is proposed for nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) with input saturation. Based on the event-triggered communication mechanisms, the updates of neural network weight and controllers are implemented solely under triggering conditions of violation, which markedly reduces unnecessary communication resources and minimizes inefficient control costs compared with the traditional control method. Radial basis function neural networks (RBF NNs) are employed to handle the nonlinear uncertainties of MASs. Simultaneously, an adaptive compensatory mechanism is incorporated within the backstepping process to address the nonlinear effect posed by input saturation. Additionally, we demonstrate the system stability by extending the Lyapunov theorem to jump and continuous scenarios while excluding Zeno behavior, realizing that all followers can enter the convex hull constructed by leaders. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified through application simulations. © 2013 IEEE.

CRT and PUF-based Self/Mutual-healing Key Distribution Protocol with Collusion Resistance and Revocation Capability

Self-healing group key distribution (SGKD) protocols guarantee the security of group communications by allowing authorized users to independently recover missed previous session keys from the current broadcast without retransmission. However, existing SGKD protocols have flaws: (1) collusion resistance and revocable nodes are both upper-bounded by the degree of polynomials used, (2) the disclosure of personal secrets enables the recovery of group key, (3) temporary revocation of a group member is not possible, and (4) a revoked node may obtain the session key when initiating mutual healing, moreover, a malicious node may cause the recovery of false group keys. To address these limitations, we propose an SGKD protocol using the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) and Physical Unclonable Function (PUF). Our proposed SGKD protocol generates a PUF-based dynamic secret by stimulating nodes' PUF using a polynomial-based encrypted challenge. This secret is then employed to retrieve a CRT-based encrypted group key. By combining PUF and CRT, we can generate dynamic secrets on the fly and reduce computation time significantly. Utilizing such a technique, our protocol achieves superior security goals, including resistance to any coalition of group nodes even if nodes' personal secrets were disclosed. Furthermore, the proposed protocol provides an unlimited number of revocable nodes. Additionally, a revoked node can rejoin its group in later sessions without affecting backward secrecy. Moreover, the protocol provides a backward secrecy guaranteed mutual-healing feature free from desynchronization. Our performance and security analyses (i.e., theorem-based formal analysis, NS3-based experiment, and formal verification using the AVIPSA tool) show that our proposed protocol achieves stronger security goals and better efficiency in terms of computation, communication, and storage costs compared to existing SGKD schemes. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Data-driven output regulation control for constrained linear systems

This study introduces a data-driven approach for state and output feedback control addressing the constrained output regulation problem in unknown linear discrete-time systems. Our method ensures effective tracking performance while satisfying the state and input constraints, even when system matrices are not available. We first establish a sufficient condition necessary for the existence of a solution pair to the regulator equation and propose a data-based approach to obtain the feedforward and feedback control gains for state feedback control using linear programming. Furthermore, we design a refined Luenberger observer to accurately estimate the system state, while keeping the estimation error within a predefined set. By combining output regulation theory, we develop an output feedback control strategy. The stability of the closed-loop system is rigorously proved to be asymptotically stable by further leveraging the concept of λ-contractive sets.
