This article discusses Blockchain and Generative AI in healthcare, including their uses, difficulties, and solutions. Blockchain technology improves EHR security, privacy, and interoperability, while smart contracts streamline supply chain management and administrative procedures. Blockchain verifies and secures IoT data, improving medical care and treatment, according to case studies. Generative AI systems like ChatGPT have transformed healthcare by personalizing therapy, diagnostics, and predictive analytics. AI systems can examine massive databases to diagnose diseases early, anticipate dangers, and personalize therapies. By providing timely information, boosting treatment adherence, and giving continuous support, AI-powered virtual health assistants have enhanced patient involvement. Generative AI has additionally enhanced medical research and drug development, cutting the time and expense of introducing new medicines. Generative AI and Blockchain provide safe patient data storage, high-quality AI training datasets, and efficient healthcare operations. Scalability, energy usage, and interoperability issues remain. Scalable Blockchain designs and standardized data integration and exchange protocols are suggested by this study. These technologies could improve medical research and therapy by making them safer, more effective, and more individualized. © The Author(s) 2025.

A Framework for IoT-Enabled Smart Manufacturing for Energy and Resource Optimization

The increasing demands for sustainable and efficient manufacturing systems have driven the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into smart manufacturing. This study investigates IoT-enabled systems designed to enhance energy efficiency and resource optimization in the manufacturing sector, focusing on a multi-layered architecture integrating sensors, edge computing, and cloud platforms. MATLAB Simulink was utilized for modeling and simulation, replicating typical manufacturing conditions to evaluate energy consumption, machine uptime, and resource usage. The results demonstrate an 18% reduction in energy consumption, a 22% decrease in machine downtime, and a 15% improvement in resource utilization. Comparative analyses highlight the superiority of the proposed framework in addressing operational inefficiencies and aligning with sustainability goals. The study underscores the potential of IoT in transforming traditional manufacturing into interconnected, intelligent systems, offering practical implications for industrial stakeholders aiming to optimize operations while adhering to global sustainability standards. Future work will focus on addressing identified challenges such as high deployment costs and data security concerns, aiming to facilitate the broader adoption of IoT in industrial applications. © 2025, CC BY.

Indoor localization (IL) plays a critical role in various applications, including asset tracking, emergency response, and indoor navigation. Traditional methods relying on one-dimensional (1D) representations of received signal strength indicator (RSSI) data often suffer from limitations such as low accuracy, environmental sensitivity, and susceptibility to interference. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes Scalogram-Based Transfer Learning for Indoor Localization (STL-IL), a novel framework that significantly enhances localization performance. The proposed approach transforms 1D RSSI signals into two-dimensional (2D) representations using scalogram-based time-frequency analysis, coupled with advanced transfer learning (TL) techniques. By leveraging the scalogram method to generate image representations of the data and employing diverse wavelet types. Furthermore, pre-trained deep learning models, including GoogleNet and SqueezeNet, are utilized to achieve state-of-the-art performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the STL-IL system achieves remarkable accuracy levels of 95% and 96% for SqueezeNet and GoogleNet, respectively. The proposed framework not only improves localization accuracy but also enhances robustness in dynamic and challenging environments, making it a promising solution for real-world indoor localization applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

BRAINGUARD: Privacy-Preserving Multisubject Image Reconstructions from Brain Activities

Reconstructing perceived images from human brain activity forms a crucial link between human and machine learning through Brain-Computer Interfaces. Early methods primarily focused on training separate models for each individual to account for individual variability in brain activity, overlooking valuable cross-subject commonalities. Recent advancements have explored multisubject methods, but these approaches face significant challenges, particularly in data privacy and effectively managing individual variability. To overcome these challenges, we introduce BRAINGUARD, a privacy-preserving collaborative training framework designed to enhance image reconstruction from multisubject fMRI data while safeguarding individual privacy. BRAINGUARD employs a collaborative global-local architecture where individual models are trained on each subject’s local data and operate in conjunction with a shared global model that captures and leverages cross-subject patterns. This architecture eliminates the need to aggregate fMRI data across subjects, thereby ensuring privacy preservation. To tackle the complexity of fMRI data, BRAINGUARD integrates a hybrid synchronization strategy, enabling individual models to dynamically incorporate parameters from the global model. By establishing a secure and collaborative training environment, BRAINGUARD not only protects sensitive brain data but also improves the image reconstructions accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BRAINGUARD sets a new benchmark in both high-level and low-level metrics, advancing the state-of-the-art in brain decoding through its innovative design. © 2025, CC BY.

Image Compressive Sensing With Scale-Variable Adaptive Sampling and Hybrid-Attention Transformer Reconstruction

Recently, a large number of image compressive sensing (CS) methods with deep unfolding networks (DUNs) have been proposed. However, existing methods either use fixed-scale blocks for sampling that leads to limited insights into the image content or employ a plain convolutional neural network (CNN) in each iteration that weakens the perception of broader contextual prior. In this paper, we propose a novel DUN (dubbed SVASNet) for image compressive sensing, which achieves scale-variable adaptive sampling and hybrid-attention Transformer reconstruction with a single model. Specifically, for scale-variable sampling, a sampling matrix-based calculator is first employed to evaluate the reconstruction distortion, which only requires measurements without access to the ground truth image. Then, a Block Scale Aggregation (BSA) strategy is presented to compute the reconstruction distortion under block divisions at different scales and select the optimal division scale for sampling. To realize hybrid-attention reconstruction, a dual Cross Attention (CA) submodule in the gradient descent step and a Spatial Attention (SA) submodule in the proximal mapping step are developed. The CA submodule introduces inter-phase inertial forces in the gradient descent, which improves the memory effect between adjacent iterations. The SA submodule integrates local and global prior representations of CNN and Transformer, and explores local and global affinities between dense feature representations. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed SVASNet achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods. © 1999-2012 IEEE.

Background: Clinical studies have shown that facial expressions and body posture in depressed patients differ significantly from those of healthy individuals. Combining relevant behavioral features with artificial intelligence technology can effectively improve the efficiency of depression detection, thereby assisting doctors in early identification of patients. This study aims to develop an end-to-end multimodal recognition model combining facial expressions and body posture via deep learning techniques, enabling rapid preliminary screening of depression. Methods: We invited 146 subjects (73 in the patient group and 73 in the control group) to participate in an emotion-stimulus experiment for depression recognition. We focused on differentiating depression patients from the control group by analyzing changes in body posture and facial expressions under emotional stimuli. We first extracted images of body position and facial emotions from the video, then used a pre-trained ResNet-50 network to extract features. Additionally, we analyzed facial expression features using OpenFace for sequence analysis. Subsequently, various deep learning frameworks were combined to assess the severity of depression. Results: We found that under different stimuli, facial expression units AU04, AU07, AU10, AU12, AU17, and AU26 had significant effects in the emotion-stimulus experiment, with these features generally being negative. The decision-level fusion model based on facial expressions and body posture achieved excellent results, with the highest accuracy of 0.904 and an F1 score of 0.901. Conclusions: The experimental results suggest that depression patients exhibit predominantly negative facial expressions. This study validates the emotion-stimulus experiment, demonstrating that combining facial expressions and body posture enables accurate preliminary depression screening. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

– Brain tumors (BT), both benign and malignant, pose a substantial impact on human health and need precise and early detection for successful treatment. Analysing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image is a common method for BT diagnosis and segmentation, yet misdiagnoses yield effective medical responses, impacting patient survival rates. Recent technological advancements have popularized deep learning-based medical image analysis, leveraging transfer learning to reuse pre-trained models for various applications. BT segmentation with MRI remains challenging despite advancements in image acquisition techniques. Accurate detection and segmentation are essential for proper diagnosis and treatment planning. This study aims to enhance BT detection and segmentation accuracy and effectiveness of categorization through the implementation of an advanced stacking ensemble learning (SEL) approach. This study explores the efficiency of SEL architecture in augmenting the precision of BT segmentation. SEL, a prominent approach within the machine learning paradigm, combines the predictions of base-level models and improves the overall performance of predictions in order to reduce the errors and biases of each model. The proposed approach involves designing a stacked DenseNet201 as the meta-model called SEL-DenseNet201, complemented by six diverse base models such as mobile network version 3 (MobileNet-v3), 3-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D-CNN), visual geometry group network with 16 and 19 layers (VGG-16 and VGG-19), residual network with 50 layers (ResNet50), and Alex network (AlexNet). The strengths of the base models are calculated to capture distinct aspects of the BT MRI, aiming for enhanced segmentation performance. The proposed SEL-DenseNet201 is trained using BT MRI datasets. Federated Learning (FL) has attracted the interest of researchers since it hinders inefficient resource utilization by developing a global learning model based on local model parameters (LMP). This study introduces a novel optimal stopping theory (OST) based online node selection scheme for low complex and multi-parameter FL procedure in IoT networks. Global model accuracy (GMA) in FL depends on the accuracy of the LMP received by the central entity (CE). It is therefore essential to choose trusty nodes to guarantee a certain level of global model accuracy without inducing additional system complexity. For this reason, the proposed technique in this study utilizes the secretary problem (SP) approach as an OST to perform node selection considering both received signal strength (RSS) and local model accuracy (LMA) of available nodes. By leveraging the SP, the proposed technique employs a stopping rule that maximizes the probability of selecting the node with the best quality, and thereby avoids testing all candidate nodes. To this end, this work provides a mathematical framework for maximizing the selection probability of the best node amongst candidate nodes. Specifically, the developed framework has been used to calculate the weighting coefficients of the RSS and LMA to define the node quality. Comprehensive analysis and simulation results illustrate that the OST based proposed technique outperforms state-of-the-art methods including the random node selection and the offline node selection (exhaustive search methods) in terms of GMA and computational complexity, respectively. © 2023 CCBY.

Colorectal intraepithelial neoplasia is a precancerous lesion of colorectal cancer, which is mainly diagnosed using pathological images. According to the characteristics of lesions, precancerous lesions can be classified into four different grades, i.e., background, normal, low and high level. However, due to the continuity of lesion development, tissue in different stages has high similarity. Recently, visual transformers have achieved impressive results in different visual tasks, due to their capacity of capturing long-range dependencies. However, due to computational cost, transformer cannot well extract detailed feature, which is important for lesion grading. To accurately segment pathological tissues with high similarity, in this work, we embed the multi-head MLP mixer module in the transformer network to extract cell and edge information. Furthermore, we propose a hierarchical MLP decoder to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion. The proposed transformer, namely MLPFormer, achieves remarkable results against competitive baselines on the Histo-CRC Biopsy dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that MLPFormer significantly outperforms the competitive baselines, i.e., a 3% dice improvement is achieved over the SegFormer series. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Coupled-mode phase matching on a silicon chip

Phase matching lies at the heart of the classical nonlinear process for frequency conversion and all-optical processing, as well as the spontaneous parametric process for the quantum light sources generation. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the coupled-mode phase-matching (CMPM) engineered by the two-paralleled-coupled waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip, extending the converted beam and entangled photons to the S band and L band. We measure the spectrum and efficiency of wavelength conversion, which successfully validates the designed CMPM scheme. We further measure the pairs generation rate of the biphoton based on the spontaneous four-wave mixing, which features a narrow bandwidth consistent well with the theoretical simulations. Multiple CMPM conditions can be achieved by exploiting the combinations of even and odd supermodes of the coupled system and tuned by designing a proper coupling gap between the two waveguides. The CMPM can extend the FWM nonlinear process ranging from the O band to the U band and even the midinfrared, enriching the working wavelength to a large extent. In addition, the CMPM features a discrete-band narrow bandwidth, which will greatly enhance the encoding density of frequency and the spectral purity of generated photon. In addition, our methods can be easily extended to a wide range of materials such as silicon nitride, dispensing with the dispersion engineering for phase matching.
