The emergence of new machine learning methods has led to their widespread application across various domains, significantly advancing the field of artificial intelligence. However, the process of training and inferring machine learning models relies on vast amounts of data, which often include sensitive private information. Consequently, the privacy and security of machine learning have encountered significant challenges. Several studies have demonstrated the vulnerability of machine learning to privacy inference attacks, but they often focus on specific scenarios, leaving a gap in understanding the broader picture. We provide a comprehensive review of privacy attacks in machine learning, focusing on two scenarios: centralized learning and federated learning. This article begins by presenting the architectures of both centralized learning and federated learning, along with their respective application scenarios. It then conducts a comprehensive review and categorization of related inference attacks, providing a detailed analysis of the different stages involved in these attacks. Moreover, the article thoroughly describes and compares the existing defense methods. Finally, the article concludes by highlighting open questions and potential future research directions, aiming to contribute to the ongoing competition between privacy attackers and defenders. © 2020 IEEE.

An Enhancement of Object Detection Using YOLO V8 and Mobile Net in Challenging Conditions

Autonomous drones and deep learning neural networks are becoming popular tools to revolutionize aircraft operations by partially automating visual inspection processes in aircraft maintenance. The research aims to provide a trustworthy method for locating and classifying surface flaws on aircraft, such as dents, fractures, corrosion, and a few other anomalies. To assess the model performance with and without a lightweight network integration, the implementation merges YOLOv8 and Mobile Net architectures, using dropout regularization and data augmentation approaches. To guarantee the model's performance in low-light situations, the dataset has been carefully selected to contain images replicating such settings. Annotation, environment setup, model training, and online dataset scraping are all covered by the thorough technique. A web-scraped dataset is used to train and validate two popular semantic segmentation algorithms, YOLOv8 and Mobile Net, which show enough performance for segmenting and grading aircraft surface problems in practical settings. The results show that precision and recall values are improved using a hybrid technique that ensembles trained Mobile Net and YOLOv8 models. Using COCO metrics, in the proposed approach an assessment of Ensemble WBF, Mobile Net-YOLO, and YOLOv8 outcomes on test and validation sets, guaranteed reliable object recognition and classification abilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer high mobility and flexible deployment capabilities, making them ideal for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, the substantial amount of data generated by various applications within the existing low-altitude network requires processing through Deep Neural Networks (DNN) on UAVs, which is challenging due to their limited computational resources. To address this issue, we propose a two-stage optimization method for flight path planning and task allocation based on a mother-child UAV swarm system. In the first stage, we employ a greedy algorithm to solve the path planning problem by considering the task size of the target area to be inspected and the shortest flight path as constraints. The goal is to minimize both the flight path of the UAV and the overall cost of the system. In the second stage, we introduce a novel DNN task assignment algorithm that combines Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) and Generative Diffusion Models (GDM), named GDM-MADDPG. This algorithm takes advantage of the reverse denoising process of GDM to replace the actor network in MADDPG. It enables UAVs to generate specific DNN task assignment actions based on agents' observations in a dynamic environment, thereby improving the efficiency of task assignment and overall system performance. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the benchmarks in terms of path planning, Age of information (AoI), task completion rate, and system utility, demonstrating its effectiveness. © 2014 IEEE.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) considerably enhances the capabilities and performance of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) by deploying edge servers (ESs) on roadside units (RSUs) near CAVs, thereby ensuring low-latency services. Given the constrained and costly nature of ES resources (computing, storage, and bandwidth), equitable ES utilization is critical for CAV operations. However, fairness considerations are often overlooked in current budgeted edge server placement (ESP) strategies, potentially worsening resource imbalances and compromising user experience. This paper investigates the fairness-aware budgeted edge server placement (FESP) problem within RSUs, proving its NP-hardness. To address FESP, we first propose FESP-O, an integer programming-based optimal approach for small-scale problems, followed by FESP-APX, an approximation approach for large-scale scenarios that provides near-optimal solutions. We analyze the time complexity and approximation ratio of our proposed algorithms and validate their efficacy through experiments on real-world datasets. Extensive experimental results demonstrate significant performance improvements over baseline and state-of-the-art methods, indicating practical suitability and efficiency. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence-inspired comprehensive framework for desertification prediction

Desertification greatly affects land deterioration, farming efficiency, economic growth, and health, especially in Gulf nations. Climate change has worsened desertification, making developmental issues in the area even more difficult. This research presents an enhanced framework utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) for ongoing monitoring, data gathering, and analysis to evaluate desertification patterns. The framework utilizes Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to categorize IoT data, while a low-latency processing method on edge computing platforms enables effective detection of desertification trends. The classified data is subsequently analyzed using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) optimized with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for forecasting decisions. Using cloud computing infrastructure, the ANN-GA model examines intricate data connections to forecast desertification risk elements. Moreover, the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is employed to predict desertification over varied time intervals. Experimental simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested framework, attaining enhanced performance in essential metrics: Temporal Delay (103.68 s), Classification Efficacy—Sensitivity (96.44 %), Precision (95.56 %), Specificity (96.97 %), and F-Measure (96.69 %)—Predictive Efficiency—Accuracy (97.76 %) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) (1.95 %)—along with Reliability (93.73 %) and Stability (75 %). The results of classification effectiveness and prediction performance emphasize the framework's ability to detect high-risk zones and predict the severity of desertification. This innovative method improves the comprehension of desertification processes and encourages sustainable land management practices, reducing the socio-economic impacts of desertification and bolstering at-risk ecosystems. In the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), the role of vehicle detection and classification is indispensable for streamlining transportation management, refining traffic control, and conducting in-depth accident analyses. However, the intricate task of accurately detecting multi-oriented vehicles in diverse scenarios remains a challenge, even with the advancements in ITS. Factors such as vehicle morphology, design, road conditions, structural details, and climatic variables provide a significant part in the detection. To address this, our study introduces an advanced YOLOv8n model, specifically the YOLOv8n-CGW, which is built upon pre-trained deep learning frameworks. This model is meticulously tailored to enhance the detection capabilities for multi-oriented vehicles. Comprehensive evaluations on esteemed datasets like MtV, MERGED, Custom dataset, DAWN, WEDGE, and UA-DETRAC underscore the superiority of our approach over existing models. Notably, our YOLOv8n-CGW model achieves a remarkable mAP of 83.3% and boasts a swift inference time of 0.0019s, setting a new benchmark in the domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

One of the internationally known oldest script is Brahmi whose digitisation may be helpful for the archaeologists as well as it may help in the digitisation of other languages. Optical character recognition techniques with genetic algorithms will be quite useful for this purpose. In this paper, a review of the work, done on the images of Brahmi letters using CNN till now, is presented. It will be useful to check the possibility of improvement in the performance of a model used for character recognition. The rapid evolution of wireless communication technologies and the increasing demand for multi-functional systems have led to the emergence of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) as a key enabler for future 6G networks. Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) have recently garnered significant attention for their ability to enhance signal coverage and improve system efficiency. This paper investigates a STAR-RIS-assisted ISAC system designed to secure communication for multiple legitimate users (LUs) while safeguarding against multiple eavesdroppers (Eves). By jointly optimizing the base station (BS) transmit beamforming, STAR-RIS transmission and reflection coefficients, and receive filters, the proposed framework aims to maximize the long-term average secrecy rate for all LUs. Constraints are imposed to ensure minimum echo signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for sensing and meet the achievable rate requirements of LUs. To address the inherent complexity of this non-convex problem, two deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms are proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves significant improvements in secrecy rate compared to conventional RIS setups. This work provides a scalable and efficient approach for secure multi-user ISAC systems, making it highly relevant for future 6G networks, smart cities, and IoT applications. © 2025 The Authors.

Decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based tool used to improve decision-making capabilities for any organization, using analysis of the available *** heart-kidney (HK) model proposed in this paper as a DSS simulates the physiological processes of the heart and kidneys in the human body to support cancer detection. The first part of the HK algorithm is inspired by the functions of the heart, where blood molecules (solutions) are sent to the heart, simulating the processes of oxygenation and the pumping of oxygenated blood to the kidneys as a local search. The solutions generated by the heart are then fed into the kidney-inspired algorithm (KA), which performs filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion. The heart component enhances the KA's local search capability, guiding the algorithm toward optimal solutions. The HK model is evaluated on eight test functions, with results compared to those of the heart algorithm and KA alone. Additionally, the HK algorithm's effectiveness as a decision support system is tested on benchmark classification and time series prediction problems, with statistical analysis against existing methods in the literature. Finally, the HK algorithm is applied to cancer detection from microRNA data, demonstrating its potential in optimizing decision-making processes in healthcare. © 2013 IEEE.
