Intelligent IoT-Driven Advanced Predictive Maintenance System for Industrial Applications

Predictive Maintenance (PdM) aims to ensure the continuous operation of high-risk industrial systems. This challenge is especially critical in environments where equipment failure can cause major financial losses and disrupt operations. Traditional PdM approaches, while fairly effective, often fall short in accurately predicting failures due to their reliance on simple statistical methods and predefined rules. The proposed work introduces an Intelligent IoT-Driven Advanced Predictive Maintenance System (APdM) that addresses these limitations. By integrating advanced machine learning techniques, including supervised and reinforcement learning, with IoT technologies to enhance predictive accuracy as well as the operational efficiency. The system leverages Explainable AI (XAI) to ensure transparency in decision-making and employs federated learning for distributed model training, preserving data privacy across multiple edge devices. The proposed APdM system was evaluated using the Kaggle "Air Compressor Predictive Maintenance" Dataset, which provided extensive sensor data from heavy vehicle operations. Comparative analysis against four prevailing PdM approaches—Traditional PdM, Decision Support System-PdM, Genetic Algorithm-based PdM, and AI-based PdM—demonstrated the superior performance of our system. The results show that the APdM system, powered by intelligent IoT integration, diminishes the Mean Error Percentage (MEP) by up to 38.4% compared to traditional methods and decreases the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) by 36.7% relative to DSS-PdM. Additionally, the system achieves a 78% improvement in Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error (SMAPE) over GA-PdM, underscoring its robust performance in real-world industrial scenarios. KDTL: knowledge-distilled transfer learning framework for diagnosing mental disorders using EEG spectrograms

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a well-known modality in neuroscience and is widely used in identifying and classifying neurological disorders. This paper investigates how EEG data can be used along with knowledge distillation-based deep learning models to detect mental disorders like epilepsy and sleep disorders. The EEG signals are converted into time–frequency plots using short-time Fourier transforms. Further, we propose a novel methodology for using knowledge distillation-based transfer learning (KDTL). Knowledge distillation is becoming quite prevalent in the machine learning field and is associated with various applications in our work;we propose its use in the detection of mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. We convert the EEGs using short-term Fourier transform to obtain time–frequency representation and apply teacher-student by first training a large teacher model and use knowledge distillation to train a student model. In our experiments, we found that ConvNext teacher and MobileNet student combination obtained better results. Our proposed KDTL approach is tested on two datasets with multiple cases, namely the Bonn and ISRUC datasets and obtain 98% and 95% accuracies, respectively. Further experimental results show that the overall KDTL methodology can obtain high classification accuracy across both datasets in binary and multiclass classifications and proves to be better than multiple prior works. Further, our KDTL approach provides a way to train lightweight models which have a smaller number of trainable parameters and thereby constitute lower training time overall. Our proposed KDTL-based approach obtained accurate results in diagnosing mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. Compared to other related methods, KDTL outperformed across tasks with obtained good results in both binary and multiclass classifications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

The emergence of different computing methods such as cloud-, fog-, and edge-based Internet of Things (IoT) systems has provided the opportunity to develop intelligent systems for disease detection. Compared to other machine learning models, deep learning models have gained more attention from the research community, as they have shown better results with a large volume of data compared to shallow learning. However, no comprehensive survey has been conducted on integrated IoT- and computing-based systems that deploy deep learning for disease detection. This study evaluated different machine learning and deep learning algorithms and their hybrid and optimized algorithms for IoT-based disease detection, using the most recent papers on IoT-based disease detection systems that include computing approaches, such as cloud, edge, and fog. Their analysis focused on an IoT deep learning architecture suitable for disease detection. It also recognizes the different factors that require the attention of researchers to develop better IoT disease detection systems. This study can be helpful to researchers interested in developing better IoT-based disease detection and prediction systems based on deep learning using hybrid algorithms. © 2024 Xi'an Jiaotong University

The importance of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), its prodromal form, for patient care, has made it a new study focus because of AD's high prevalence and huge social impact on health. Existing research have used machine learning approaches to diagnose AD early by looking at numerous biomarkers. However, in the bulk of current research, the diagnosis performance is hampered by the inability to efficiently extract high-level brain features that indicate the primary abnormalities of anatomical brain regions connected to AD. In order to diagnose AD brain pictures, the suggested model combines a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN).The dataset is preprocessed to create a clear representation of the brain's grey matter, and the cGAN is utilised to create more training instances for the model to improve accuracy. According to the limitations of the discriminator, the generator in cGAN-ADD learns to include the illness category feedback from the classifier into the 2D-brain slice image reconstruction process for image improvement in the training phase. In the prediction phase, the stacked CNN layers extract high-level brain properties from category-enhanced 2D-brain slice pictures. The classifier gets the collected brain features in order to output the posterior probability of disease conditions (Normal, AD, Mild and Very Mild). Tensorflow is used to train the model, and Keras is used to evaluate classification accuracy. The model is trained and tested on ADNI dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the group of disorder occurs on heart and blood vessel, and they are coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, etc. Particularly people under the age of 70 are mostly affected by this disease. Earlier cardiologist analyse phonocardiography (PCG) signals to know the condition of heart. Because of the undesirable noise present in PCG signal makes complication in diagnosis by experts. This study analyse and denoising heart sound using five different techniques namely Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), weiner filter (WF), adaptive Wiener-Kalman filtering (AWKF). There are Lot of noise removal techniques available as discussed in the literature, failed to achieve higher performance in denoising audio signal. The developed denoising techniques were applied on various pathological heart sounds and on heart sound recorded in a noisy environment. The AWKF filtering has great impact on removing distortion and interference present on the signal. This method reserves the major characteristics of heart beat sound. The experimental results showed that AWKF acquired higher SNR, PSNR, lower RMSE and great denoising effect. © 2024 IEEE.

Comparing with neural network method to more known methods, this article assesses their simplicity and effectiveness. Our approach uses new network pruning, interpretability-based regularization, and gradient-based sensitivity analysis. Numerous dataset trials show that the suggested method is more accurate, faster, and more durable than others. Also easier to understand. It turns out that small neural networks may simplify models without compromising accuracy. This comparative study shows how neural networks can handle complex data and make good predictions. These networks will be increasingly accessible in daily life. © 2024 IEEE.

Aphasia is one of the brain disorders that affects the part of the brain that is responsible for communication. This work deals with the detection of aphasia from speech features. The features extracted from the speech samples are MFCC, mel spectrogram, zero crossing rate, chroma, energy, spectral centroid, spectral roll-off, fundamental frequency and utterance duration. These different speech features were then ranked based on the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs), and the most important features were retained in an optimized feature set that was given to various machine learning models like support vector machine and decision trees and deep learning models like LSTM, LSTM with GRU, Bi-LSTM and Bi-LSTM with GRU. These models were then evaluated based on their train and test set accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, plots of training loss and validation loss and confusion matrix. Based on the analysis of the performance metrics, Bi-LSTM with GRU was found to be the best model among all the models used. The model’s performance was evaluated using metrics like accuracy, F1 score, recall and precision when trained and tested with the optimal feature set which were 87.5%, 79.7%, 90% and 75%, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
