Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world. The paper will share plans to help members learn from each other's best practices and even failures and how those organizations that have been in existence for quite some time (ASEE was founded in the late 19th century) can contribute to the institutio

We have addressed the improvement of production efficiency in an automobile parts supplier, and have revised the business processes to develop the knowledge-based production scheduling software as final goal. This paper focuses on the printing process from the whole of production processes, and describes the result of business process analysis to obtain the worker's implicit knowledge. Until now the whole of business processes in the parts supplier have been examined by our previous researches, and we have mainly discussed the operation in printing process as a lot sizing scheduling problem only by theoretical aspect. However the previous approaches cannot flexibly respond to the change of production conditions such as the dispersion of order, the interrupt of urgent task, and the change of inventory quantity in spite of the actual field can handle these. Therefore this paper regards that the expert's technical know-how of tacit knowledge in the actual printing field is mostly important factor in response to the change of production conditions, and the realities of lot sizing is grasped by the production performance records.

We have developed a well-balanced menu planning system to supply dishes to someone's taste. The system implements fuzzy mathematical programming logic and rough set theory. The fuzzy mathematical programming is mainly used to select menu among database, and the rough set theory provides user's selection rule for menu. This paper particularly focuses the method of rough set theory with fuzzy weight. So far we have used an information system with fuzzy weights adopted to only each tuple data. This paper discusses the method that is evaluated each attribute including both of condition and decision using a fuzzy number, in order to cover all uncertainties and noises in a menu database. On rough set procedure, some invisible elements are visualized i.e., it takes notice of the visualization of nutritional information which hid behind a user's favorite. Each user's characteristic is grasped and well-balanced menus are presented for each user after filling constraints such as the affinity of cooking.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. The contribution of this article is a complete overview of the principal research directions in rough set theory and its applications in China. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In today's CPU Voltage Regulator (VR) industry, coupled inductor VRs have begun to replace the non-coupled VRs for their better performances. However, today's coupled inductor implementations have long winding paths, which is not preferred in the high current CPU VR application. In this paper, several short winding path coupled inductor structures for 2 and more phase coupled inductors are proposed. Their precise reluctance models are illustrated and their design guidelines based on their precise reluctance models are also shown. The experimental results verify the proposed structures, their models and their design procedures.

Digital image watermarking algorithm based on wavelet packets decomposition

An adaptive digital watermarking algorithm based on wavelet packets decomposition is presented. The best bases of the wavelet packets are selected according to Shannon entropy criterion. The host image and the original watermark image are decomposed into two levels wavelet packets decomposition. The wavelet packets not only decompose the scaling space, but also the wavelet space, so the wavelet packets decomposition can decompose images in finer and flexible way. In the proposed watermarking algorithm, the noise visibility function (NVF) is used for the adaptive watermarking embedding. The experimental results show that proposed method has a good performance at the invisibility and robustness to JPEG image compression.

In this paper, a new speed sensorless control based on a fuzzy compensator is proposed for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The conventional proportional plus integrate (PI) control are very sensitive to a step change of the command speed, parameter variations and load disturbance. To settle these problems of the PI control, the estimated speeds are compensated by using the fuzzy logic controller (FLC). In the FLC used for compensating the speed error of the IPMSM, the system control parameters are adjusted by the fuzzy rule based system, which is a logical model of the human behavior for process control. The effectiveness of algorithm is confirmed by the experiments.

To protect the environment and enhance the human health, the lead-free process is speeded up rapidly in recent years. However, on the way to lead-free process, lead and lead-free materials will be used within the same mounting process for the manufacturers of electronic products. Therefore it is necessary to study the reliability of the mixed solder joints. Based on BGA device, this paper analyzes the reliability of the mixed solder joints with thermal cycling loading by ANSYS software, and predicts the thermal life fatigue life of the joints by modified Coffin-Manson equation. The order of the thermal fatigue life of the joints is: lead-free solder joints >FWC solder joints >BWC solder joints (uniform structure) >lead solder joints >BWC solder joints (non-uniform structure). A case study is given. The result shows that the reliability of lead-free solder joints and mixed solder joints (uniform structure) are better than that of lead solder joints. ©2007 IEEE.

An intelligent algorithm based on genetic algorithm search for selecting an optimal gene subset was presented and applied it to the Chinese gastric cancer mRNA microarray data to discover the feature genes. Firstly, an improved genetic algorithm was proposed to learn the optimal subsets of genes. Then a support vector machine (SVM) was employed to find the gene subset with best classification performance for distinguishing cancerous tissues and their counterparts. Some of the obtained feature genes have been validated by Beijing Molecular Oncology Laboratory. Both of the biological and computational experiments have shown that the improved genetic algorithm has good performance in both the quality of obtained feature subsets and computation efficiency. © 2007 IEEE.
