The characteristics of corona discharge in needle to plane electrodes have been simulated by a two-dimensional fluid method. It was assumed that the transport coefficients of nitrogen gas were only the function of reduced electric field. In this discharge mechanism, Townsend first ionization and a secondary electron emission were considered. The spatio-temporal distributions of electron and ion densities at three discharge steps were obtained by solving continuity equations using FCT algorithm. This paper also describes the effect of space charge on the electric field distribution.

New filter class for multichannel image processing is introduced and analyzed. The new technique of image enhancement is capable of reducing impulsive and Gaussian noise and it significantly outperforms the standard methods of noise reduction. In the paper a smoothing operator, based on a random walk model and a fuzzy similarity measure between pixels connected by a digital geodesic path is introduced. The efficiency of the proposed method was tested on the standard color images using the objective image quality measures. Obtained results show that the new method not only outperforms standard noise reduction algorithms, but has some interesting features useful for segmentation of noisy color images.

An electromagnetic-type vibratory feeder of is a typical transportation device used in automatic weighers. As existing feeders are driven by feedforward control, the so-called "firing angle control", the driver cannot negate sudden disturbances. In this study, we consider applying a feedback control for such a feeder system. First, we give the two details of modelings for the vibration part and for the electromagnetic force part. Next, a feedback control system is constructed for the electromagnetic vibration feeder for which we propose a two-degrees-of-freedom proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) controller with nonlinear elements. Next, we apply the feedback control to the feeder with a standard trough. Finally, we consider a method compatible with many varieties of troughs by adjusting a nonlinear element. On the basis of the results of some experiments, we confirm that the two-degrees-of-freedom PID control is more effective than the conventional firing angle control.

A database called the transportation information system for evaluating the graphical and non-graphical data for the city of Istanbul has been formed. Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) is very useful technology to prevent accidents. Since previous magnetic sensors for NDE cannot clearly distinguish adjacent reverse-side cracks on a metallic plate, existence of adjacent reverse-side cracks is a serious problem. Up to now, there are not many discussions about space resolution of the magnetic sensor. So, it is important that adjacent small reverse-side cracks are clearly resolved in to two cracks by the magnetic sensor. The rotational magnetic flux sensor with a differential search coil is characterized by the rotational excitation and three differential output signals. And, it shows high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to detection of a small reverse-side crack on a 5 mm thick steel plate (SS400). In this paper, we present the new NDE system such as the rotational magnetic flux sensor with the differential search coil with the neural network. And, space resolution of this NDE system is discussed. It can clearly separate adjacent reverse-side cracks (the depth of cracks is 2 mm, the distance between two cracks is 2 mm). The new NDE system shows a good capability for separation of adjacent reverse-side cracks on a 5 mm thick steel plate.

Presents a control strategy of a one link flexible arm for the contact motion with a moving object. Our purpose is to accomplish the smooth transition from the free space to the constraint space without changing control laws at collision. We design the controller based on the model following servo system with two additional compensators. One is the stabilizing compensation based on strain feedback and the other is the approaching velocity compensation based on a relative displacement feedback. In order to improve the force tracking performance, we determine the relative displacement feedback gain so as to minimize a performance index. Moreover, we virtually adjust the desired force to realize the high-speed approaching motion. Some experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

The application of a nonlinear predictive controller in the cascade control structure of a boost converter is investigated. The neuro-predictive controller is realized as a nonlinear optimizer, using the Levenberg-Marquardt unconstrained optimization procedure. For the prediction of future process responses, two MLP neural networks are used. One network is used for modeling the converter dynamics and the other for online estimation of the converter's input voltage. This structure ensures good system performance in all operating regions and inherent compensation of ripples in the converter's input current caused by variations of the input voltage. The advantages of the proposed control structure are demonstrated through experimental comparison with a linear GPC with manually adjusted feedforward compensator.

This paper present a new effective algorithm for the optimal realization of state estimate feedback controller structures for discrete time systems subject to finite-word-length constraints. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear programming to provide an easy and efficient optimization tool to solve such a complex problem. Simulation results of the optimum realizations of state estimate feedback controller structures are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
