Farmers all over the world struggle to fight plant diseases. However, the incorrect use of pesticides can waste time, effort, and money and can also be very harmful to the environment and human health. In this work, we present an empirical study that involves identifying two pathogens related to Cucumbers plant diseases: Powdery Mildew and Alternaria Cucumerina. The study aims to develop a computer-based solution based on deep learning and machine learning algorithms to detect these diseases. To achieve this, a dataset of hundreds of samples was collected from ordinary farms in Beqaa, an agricultural region 15 KM north of Amman, Jordan. Three machine learning models were created in this study using Support Vector Machines (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), and Multi-layer perceptron algorithms. The constructed models were applied to the dataset after embedding the dataset images using the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) InceptionV3 pre-trained model. The model was tested and evaluated using cross-evaluation and F1-Score, CA, AUC, Precision, Recall, and Specificity, which all showed excellent results, particularly using the SVM algorithm. The constructed methods are intended to be deployed to farms in their field condition environments using a CCTV system that can capture images of plants during growth, which can help identify plant diseases at that right stage, which would save time, effort, and money and reduce the impact of wrong and overuse of pesticides on consumers and the environment. © 2024 IEEE.

The application on a blockchain cannot maintain secrecy because its data is replicated across all peers in the network. To remedy this problem, Hyperledger Fabric introduces private data collection (PDC) into its smart contract (i.e. chaincode) to facilitate applications that require privacy. However, recent studies have revealed that PDC is too complex for chaincode developers to fully understand and use correctly, leading to privacy leaks vulnerabilities. In this paper, we present an empirical study on the prevalence of PDC misuse in chaincodes by extracting privacy leakage cases from StackOverflow posts and Hyperledger Fabric repositories on GitHub. Subsequently, we systematically categorize the misuse of PDC into three categories of vulnerabilities resulting in the leakage of private data and provide formal definitions for them. Furthermore, we develop PDChecker, an automated security analysis framework for identifying the privacy and security vulnerabilities in Fabric chaincodes. We evaluated PDChecker on 956 real-world chaincodes applying PDC and found that 67.78% of them contain at least one privacy leakage vulnerability. In addition, PDChecker uncovered 10 zero-day vulnerabilities documented by the China National Vulnerability database. © 2024 IEEE.

Edge computing is a novel computing paradigm that offers kinds of resources at the network edge. In edge computing, terminal users are connected to edge servers via the wireless network and there are various channels in each wireless link. These wireless channels are limited resource while different channel has different cost and service ability. The dynamic changes of users' status make it harder to find an appropriate method to satisfy the BPM requirements of channel deployment. With this observation, it is a tricky challenge to make a trade-off between the system cost(rental price) and the service ability(number of users). In view of this challenge, an intelligent resource scheduling method, named EdgeIRS, is proposed in this paper. In the technical sense, the EdgeIRS method can accommodate most users at the edge with a minimum cost of deploying channel resources in an online way. Its performance is analyzed theoretically and the experiments verify the superiority of the method. © 2022 IEEE.

TIGER: A Generating-Then-Ranking Framework for Practical Python Type Inference

Python’s dynamic typing system offers flexibility and expressiveness but can lead to type-related errors, prompting the need for automated type inference to enhance type hinting. While existing learning-based approaches show promising inference accuracy, they struggle with practical challenges in comprehensively handling various types, including complex parameterized types and (unseen) user-defined types. In this paper, we introduce TIGER, a two-stage generating-then-ranking (GTR) framework, designed to effectively handle Python’s diverse type categories. TIGER leverages fine-tuned pre-trained code models to train a generative model with a span masking objective and a similarity model with a contrastive training objective. This approach allows TIGER to generate a wide range of type candidates, including complex parameterized types in the generating stage, and accurately rank them with user-defined types in the ranking stage. Our evaluation on the ManyTypes4Py dataset shows TIGER’s advantage over existing methods in various type categories, notably improving accuracy in inferring user-defined and unseen types by 11.2% and 20.1% respectively in Top-5 Exact Match. Moreover, the experimental results not only demonstrate TIGER’s superior performance and efficiency, but also underscore the significance of its generating and ranking stages in enhancing automated type inference. © 2024, CC BY.

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it not only a global health crisis but also an infodemic characterized by the rampant spread of misinformation on social media platforms. In response to the urgent need for effective misinformation detection, this study presents a comprehensive approach harnessing machine learning and deep learning techniques, culminating in ensemble methods, to combat the proliferation of COVID-19 misinformation on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Drawing from a rich dataset comprising user comments on these platforms, encompassing diverse COVID-19-related discussions, our research applies SVM, decision tree, logistic regression, and neural networks to perform in-depth analysis and classification of comments into two categories: positive and negative information. The innovation of our approach lies in the final phase, where we employ ensemble methods to consolidate the strengths of various machine learning and deep learning algorithms. After applying ensemble learning, accuracy reached 91% for Facebook content, 79% for Instagram, 80% for Twitter, and 95% for YouTube. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This study establishes an intelligent medical system for diagnosis and treatment of Chinese medicine. Temperature and heart rate were measured using a variety of Internet of things technologies, including the WeMos D1 Mini with ESP8266 integrated and thermistors, and then the resistance was learned to relate to temperature via a neural network. In addition, the AD8232 biomedical sensor and the WeMos D1 Mini were used for ECG measurements and heart rate conversion. A self-written mobile application designed with multiple units to collect data from a variety of patients. The tongue diagnosis unit can recognize the characteristics of tongue substance and coating. The pulse examination unit adopts the five layer pulse method of Yaowangmai pulse. The inquiry unit adopts the syndrome differentiation method of Dr. Shaogong Shen. These IoT data, information if the patient's tongue diagnosis, five-layer pulse examination data and various inquiry data can all be read and transmitted to the cloud. The intelligent medical system of Chinese medicine in this study can also make preliminary treatment recommendations based on a variety of patient data and provide corresponding treatment drugs © 2022 IEEE.

CMCache: An Adaptive Cross-Level data Placement Method for Multi-Level Cache

Multi-level cache systems enhance I/O performance by optimizing data placement across various cache levels from a global perspective. However, existing methods often struggle to place data at the optimal cache level promptly due to their reliance on historical access patterns and inflexible placement strategies. These methods face two main challenges: (1) For already cached data with sufficient access history, existing approaches only optimize movement between adjacent cache levels, potentially delaying data arrival at its globally optimal cache level and leading to unnecessary bandwidth consumption and increased latency. (2) For newly entered data without access history, current methods cannot accurately predict their future hotness and simply place them at a fixed cache level (i.e. first or last level), overlooking future accesses of new data and potentially resulting in high cache miss rates or cache pollution. To address these issues, we propose CMCache, an adaptive cross-level data placement method for multi-level cache. CMCache applies distinct placement strategies for cached and new data to reach the optimal level timely, considering their different characteristics. It also logically divides cache space into two sections to manage cached and new data separately, dynamically adjusting section sizes based on access patterns. This approach significantly improves data placement efficiency, achieving up to an 89% reduction in miss rates and a 79% decrease in average response times compared to existing methods. © 2025 IEEE.

data centers are critical infrastructures that support a multitude of business loads such as big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. While providing the necessary computing power, the problem of high energy consumption in data centers has become a major obstacle limiting their scale-up, reliability and quality of service. Improving the power usage effectiveness (PUE) of data centers is an important way to improve the energy efficiency of data centers. With the development of theories and methods of machine learning, modeling, analysis and prediction of data center energy consumption using machine learning techniques has become a feasible option. In this study, several accurate PUE prediction models are constructed using neural networks and machine learning techniques for the PUE of a small air-cooled data center in actual operation, among which the mean absolute error of the optimal model reaches 0.29%. In addition, this paper also uses Random Forest and Sobol methods to model and conduct sensitivity analyses of key factors affecting data center PUE, revealing the relationship between data center operating parameters and PUE, and finding that the cooling system exhibits different energy consumption patterns under different IT equipment power conditions, which has a decisive impact on PUE. Based on these sensitivity analyses, we argue that for small air-cooled data centers, improving internal insulation and humidity is an important strategy for optimizing PUE. © 2024 IEEE.

Endangered animal resources are crucial for biodiversity conservation and research. The detection and identification of endangered animals is a significant means to achieve this. However, the recognition accuracy of endangered animals is often affected by complex environmental conditions in the field. This paper proposes an improved algorithm named Endangered Animals-You Only Look Once (EA-YOLO) to address the issues of low target recognition accuracy and lack of feature extraction caused by complex environmental conditions and small target proportions in the picture. The algorithm is based on YOLOv8. This paper proposes two improvements to YOLOv8. Firstly, a multi-scale object detection head is introduced to fuse more image feature information, enhancing the network's ability to perceive and localize small targets. Secondly, a Global Attention Mechanism (GAM) module is added to learn richer feature information. The network can focus on important features and ignore irrelevant ones, leading to improved performance. The EA-YOLO model was evaluated on the LoTE-Animal dataset through extensive experiments. Results indicate that the improved model achieved an average accuracy of 95%, which is a 9% improvement over the original algorithm while maintaining competitive detection accuracy.

Community discovery can help discover potential community structures in the network, which is a fundamental and important issue in network science. Graph neural network-based algorithms are receiving increasing attention. However, there is relatively little work on community discovery directly using graph neural networks in reconstruction design. This paper presents an Unsupervised Community Discovery Algorithm based on reconstructed graph neural network (UCDA) to resolve the above issues. To be specific, this paper proposes a framework that learns the representation based on network structure and attribute information. By designing input network features, encoders, decoders, this algorithm uses an unsupervised loss function to train neural networks to extract communities in an integrated way. These designs integrate higher-order modularity information with network features and use variational graph auto-encoders to train data end-to-end under the graph neural network framework. Based on a series of experiments with a wide range of datasets and advanced algorithms, UCDA has achieved superior performance and shows strong competitiveness. Finally, the last section reports the results analysis, t-SNE visualization and hyperparameter analysis, which depicts stable performance and powerful network modularity ability. © 2023 IEEE.
