The influence of sustainable physical factors on Hajj crowd perception among internal pilgrim group in Mina

Devotional and ritual observance by internal pilgrims to Hajj presents a constant journey towards fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam. Although, internal pilgrims are within their geographical domain, the large number of pilgrims visiting Mina at a given time stimulates crowding perception. Internal pilgrims perform such rituals in Mina for a minimum of three days. The local authorities are constantly expected to provide adequate amenities which require constant assessment to enable internal pilgrims perform their rituals without the stress of feeling crowded. In the quest for sustainable best practices, this paper examines the effects of sustainable physical factors (coding and signage, disorientation cause, spatial anxiety, orientation strategies and routing strategies) on perceived crowding levels among internal group of pilgrims in Mina. Data was collected via self-Administered questionnaire from 473 internal pilgrims to Hajj. The data was analysed using SPSS for descriptive analysis and AMOS for Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Internal consistency of the developed research instrument, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy and exploratory factor analysis revealed that the research instrument was suitable. The internal pilgrim group measurement model revealed that orientation strategies and routing strategies had the highest correlation. Furthermore, disorientation cause (0.63), spatial anxiety (-0.59), orientation strategies (0.60) and routing strategies (-0.61) were all significantly affecting level of crowding perception except coding and signage (-0.52). In summary, the findings will aid in directing policies aimed at improving crowd control by authorities in Mina. Copyright © 2017, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l..

Reducing Synchronization Cost for Single-Level Store in Mobile Systems

Emerging byte-addressable non-volatile memory technologies, such as phase change memory （PCM） and spin- transfer torque RAM （STT-RAM）, offer both the byte-addressability of memory and the durability of storage, thus making it feasible to build single-level store systems. To ensure the consistency of persistent data structures in the presence of power failures or system crashes, it requires flushing cache lines to persistent memory frequently, thus incurring non-trivial synchronization overhead. To mitigate this issue, we propose two techniques. First, we use non-volatile STT-RAM as scratchpad memory on chip to store recovery information, thereby eliminating synchronization cost in the logging phase due to the avoidance of off-chip logging operations. Second, we present an adaptive synchronization policy based on caching modes in terms of data access patterns, thereby eliminating unnecessary synchronization cost in the checkpoint phase. Evaluation results indicate that the two techniques improve the overall performance from 2.15x to 2.39x compared with conventional transactional persistent memory.

The term Tactile Internet broadly refers to a communication network which is capable of delivering control, touch, and sensing/actuation information in real-time. The Tactile Internet is currently a topic of interest for various standardization bodies. The emerging IEEE P1918.1 standards working group is focusing on defining a framework for the Tactile Internet. The main objective of this article is to present a reference architecture for the Tactile Internet based on the latest developments within the IEEE P1918.1 standard. The article provides an in-depth treatment of various architectural aspects including the key entities, the interfaces, the functional capabilities and the protocol stack. A case study has been presented as a manifestation of the architecture. Performance evaluation demonstrates the impact of functional capabilities and the underlying enablers on user-level utility pertaining to a generic Tactile Internet application. The high-cycle fatigue behavior of Q345B structural steel was investigated experimentally. Highfrequency vibration fatigue testing machine and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the high-cycle fatigue S–N curve characteristics and crack initiation mechanism at ambient temperature. The surface temperature of the specimens was monitored. The relation between the fatigue limit and the amount of heat dissipation was also investigated. It was found that the fatigue life changed inversely with the stress amplitude in the high-cycle range. The fatigue limit in high cycle range was obtained from heat dissipation in the specimen and found to have good agreement with the S–N curve. The crack initiation was attributed to the surface defects and the persistent slip bands due to the cycle slip in fatigue loading.

Towards memory-efficient processing-in-memory architecture for convolutional neural networks

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely adopted in artificial intelligent systems. In contrast to conventional computing centric applications, the computational and memory resources of CNN applications are mixed together in the network weights. This incurs a significant amount of data movement, especially for highdimensional convolutions. Although recent embedded 3D-stacked Processing-in-Memory (PIM) architecture alleviates this memory bottleneck to provide fast near-data processing, memory is still a limiting factor of the entire system. An unsolved key challenge is how to efficiently allocate convolutions to 3D-stacked PIM to combine the advantages of both neural and computational processing. This paper presents Memolution, a compiler-based memory efficient data allocation strategy for convolutional neural networks on PIM architecture. Memolution offers thread-level parallelism that can fully exploit the computational power of PIM architecture. The objective is to capture the characteristics of neural network applications and present a hardware-independent design to transparently allocate CNN applications onto the underlining hardware resources provided by PIM. We demonstrate the viability of the proposed technique using a variety of realistic convolutional neural network applications. Our extensive evaluations show that, Memolution significantly improves performance and the cache utilization compared to the baseline scheme. © 2017 ACM.

This paper outlines an investigation into the effect upon edge quality and flexural strength in 10mm float and sintered recycled container glass of different methods of cutting: hand diamond-scoring, diamond sawing and abrasive waterjet cutting. The research made use of a four-point-loading method to determine flexural strength and a surface roughness meter to assess the cut edge quality. We present the result of a cross-disciplinary collaboration between the California college of the Arts, San Francisco and the KM3NeT Collaboration. The project involved creating an analog sound producing instrument which was installed within a standard KM3NeT pressure resistant glass sphere housing along with sound and video recording equipment. The instrument, titled "Bathysphere", was deployed in the sea for the first time adjacent to the ORCA array of KM3NeT off the coast of Toulon, France on September 23, 2021. One outcome of this project is the video work "Below the Surface". It incorporates sound and video recorded from within the "Bathysphere" as it floated on the surface of the Mediterranean and then as it dived down to 300 m depth. As the "Bathysphere" dived, the analog instrument it contained quietened. The sound in the dive portion of the video is created from the sonification of data from the KM3NeT array that was recorded during the deployment of the "Bathysphere". "Below the Surface" highlights the extraordinary environment in which the KM3NeT array is being created and operates. Extracting centerlines of coronary arteries is challenging but important in clinical applications of cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA). Since manual annotation of coronary arteries is time-consuming, laborintensive and subject to intra- and inter-variations, we propose a new method to fully automatically extract the coronary centerlines. We first develop a new image filter which generates pixels with salient vessel features within a given window. This filter hence can capture sparsely distributed but important vessel points, enabling the minimal path (MP) process to track the key centerline points at different resolution of the images. Then, we reformulate the filter for multi-resolution fast marching, which not only can speed up the coronary tracking process, but also can help the front propagation to step over the indistinct segments of the coronary artery such as at the locations of stenosis. We embed this scheme into the MP framework to develop a multi-resolution multi-model approach (MMP), where the extracted centerlines from low-resolution MP serve as prior and constraints for the high-resolution process. We evaluated the performance of this method using the Rotterdam CTA training data and the coronary artery algorithm evaluation framework. The average inside of our extraction was 0.51 mm and the overlap was 72.9 %. The mean runtime on the original resolution CTA images was 3.4 min using the MMP method. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.
