The articles in this special section is to find out what lies beyond the fascination toward robots that we have inherited from popular culture, the pleasure of learning with robots derived from the gamification of learning, and the strong appeal for robotics technologies given by its aura of innovation. Are there authentic ways in which robotics can improve education, and what affordances does robotics, in particular, provide for such educational transformation? Indeed, one of the biggest gray areas of educational robotics concerns the lack of empirical evidence on the educational (pedagogical as well as psychological) effectiveness of robots that is related to both the lack of standardized evaluation criteria and the methodological difficulties in conducting sound scientific tests.

A few months ago I took part in a gloomy debate about the housing crisis with the celebrated modernist architect Kate Macintosh. All the speakers had referred despairingly to the demolition of dozens upon dozens of London's housing estates—the ‘London clearances’ written about so cogently by Simon Elmer and Geraldine Dening in this Special Feature. When Kate got up to speak she talked about her experience of designing South London's landmark Dawson's Heights in the 1960s and the success of recent community projects in bringing North London's once troubled Broadwater Farm Estate together. ‘Does she not know it's also under threat of demolition?’, I wondered to myself. It turns out she did, with her voice cracking as she continued, breaking down in tears at the thought of what the community now had to face, despite all their efforts. Then she composed herself and continued. But as she returned to her seat she was tripped up by a misplaced lead and fell, breaking her arm. It was an upsetting incident and felt to me like a disturbing metaphor for London's housing crisis. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Statistical Interconnect Crosstalk Noise Model and Analysis for Process Variations

When operating frequency is over several gigahertz, the effect of inductance plays an important role and should be included for accurate and speed crosstalk noise analysis. And for new generation IC(Integrated circuit) design tools, the crosstalk noise analysis tools should consider the influence of process variations. In this paper, we propose coupled RLC crosstalk noise distributed parameter model with capacitive load termination. And we develop the framework that how to use the crosstalk noise model for process variations. Our results show that compare with HSPICE, the critical data errors of proposed model are within 1% and the relative errors occurred between calculated values for process variations and HSPICE Monte Carlo simulation values are less than 5%. The key features of the new model include:(1) The impact of inductance on crosstalk noise is considered;(2) The model can be used for process variations analysis;(3) The model reflect the effects of load capacitance directly;(4) The numerical inversion of Laplace transform is introduced for improving speed. So the proposed model meets the needs of future IC design both in speed and accuracy.

The paper details on-chip inductor optimization for a reconfigurable continuous-time delta-sigma (Δ-Σ) modulator based radio-frequency analog-to-digital converter. Inductor optimisation enables the Δ-Σ modulator with Q enhanced LC tank circuits employing a single high Q-factor on-chip inductor and lesser quantizer levels thereby reducing the circuit complexity for excess loop delay, power dissipation and dynamic element matching. System level simulations indicate at a Q-factor of 75 Δ-Σ modulator with a 3-level quantizer achieves dynamic ranges of 106, 82 dB and 84 dB for RFID, TETRA, and Galileo over bandwidths of 200 kHz, 10 MHz and 40 MHz respectively.

Test and prediction of chloride diffusion in recycled aggregate concrete

Recycled aggregate concrete （RAC） specimens with different recycled zoarse aggregate replacement ratios by mass （R） are fully immersed in a 10% chloride solution for 235 days. Both free chloride concentration （CI） and total chloride concentration （Ct） are then measured employing a rapid chloride test （RCT） system. The Fick＇s second diffusion law is verified by the test data and used to predict chloride concentration distribution at different immersion periods. Addilionally, pore structures of the new and old mortar in RAC are tested by mercury intrusion porosimetrV （MIP）. It is found that bind- ing chloride concentration （Cb） linearly increases with Cf. In natural aggregate concrete （NAC）, Cf is obviously smaller than that in the RAC in the same testing environment and this is different from the test results of Ct and Cb. Furthermore, the effects of R on the chloride concentration of RAC become severe for specimens subjected to long immersion periods, which can be explained in terms of the pore structures of the new mortar and old adhesive mortar in RAC.

Computational methods have been successfully applied in structural analysis and drawings of large spatial structures. However, there are still huge challenges in performing conceptual design of structures using computers for what the human brain is able to do. A computational method, named performance-based structural synthesis, has been proposed and validated to generate and realize planar truss structures. However, it is insufficient for more general spatial truss structures whose geometries and load-carrying requirements are more complex compared with those of a planar truss. Therefore, this computational synthesis method based on planar shape grammar was extended and presented in this paper to generate three-dimensional spatial truss structures through building 3D shape grammars and multi-objective hybridized optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, techniques of load-generation were employed in the structural synthesis method to realize its engineering application. In the aspect of structural configuration, the method integrates structural topology, geometry and section size allocation. In the aspect of structural design and optimization, it takes into account the combining effects of safety, economy, construction and architectural elegance. Thus, the structure generated by this synthesis method must be the best design in terms of the overall structural performance and cost compared with that obtained by the traditional design method. © ASCE 2014.

This article aims to understand what does the duty of utmost good faith (uberrimae fidei) in insurance contract mean for the construction industry. In construction insurance contracts, the duty of utmost good faith (uberrimae fidei) plays an important role. The analysis of case law shows that an insurer has the right in law to avoid the contract of insurance in its entirety if the insured was guilty of fraud, non-disclosure or misrepresentation before the contract was entered into. It seems to be unjust because even though the insured may be honest, he could still be in breach of duty. Utmost here means that both the insurer and the insured have the duty beyond the reasonable integrity and honesty. Furthermore, the insurer may also have a claim in the case of a breach of utmost good faith during the contract. It proceeds on the basis that the insurer likewise owes the insured a duty of good faith. While sounding good in theory, it can be argued that it may mean very little in practice. In the last decade, the English courts are turning their eyes towards the mutuality of the duty of good faith owed by the insurers to the insured. There is a new practical focus in the construction industry on inducement to balance the risk on the insured and insurer, where the mutuality of the duty of good faith is shifting towards the obligations on the insurers.

Is expert witness immunity from suit a thing of the past in construction law? This article explores whether immunity for expert witness should be abolished or not;whether there is a need to distinguish between immunity from suit from actions in negligence, and immunity from suit from actions in defamation. The analysis from case law shows that it is most likely that in the future, immunity will be largely curtailed. It may be considered just and fair for immunity from suit to remain a significant legal and moral obligation for expert witness in view of human rights and right to a fair trial, although we can see there is evidence of a change in the concept of immunity. It can be argued that parties should ensure they employ competent experts to give them appropriate advice, experts should be accountable for the evidence they provide for the court at trials, and immunity from suit should not be enjoyed by expert witness if Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights on the right to a fair trial cannot be upheld. Therefore, it is necessary for the courts to modernise their approach to this particular area of law, and to comply with Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights. However, it can be argued that if immunity from suit is removed, very few experts will be prepared to be an expert witness for fear of being liable for negligent evidence. In most circumstances, it would be challenging to please the clients as well as carrying out the overriding duty to the court simultaneously. It makes more sense for the expert witness immunity from suit to be maintained but establishing criteria for departures instead of granting blanket immunity.
