Quite operation of home appliances is one of the most significant criteria used by customers, when they select the exact device among several devices with similar functionality. In such circumstances, even minor noise, which happens quite rarely, may negatively impact on the choice of customers. Thus, makers of various device for home wage a war on every excessive noise. As a result, various methods for noise control became an attractive and popular topic, involving talented researchers. This paper studies acoustic noise in preheating mode of compressors, where motor does not rotate thus decreasing background noise. In these conditions other minor noises become notable and significantly impact noise profile of the compressors. In the preheating mode of compressor, the dC current is injected into motor windings warming them. This heat transfers through the motor parts and compressor shell to the oil located at the bottom of compressor. This operation is required in order to decrease oil viscosity and guarantee normal operation of mechanical part. However injected current produces noise, which is undesired and should be decreased as much as possible. This research proposes and analyzes several approaches to compressor preheating and select the most silent one. © 2023 IEEE.

An endfire antenna is developed in this work. A step structure fed from the middle layer to the aperture is formed in the multilayer substrate. The lengths of the steps are approximately a quarter wavelength in the substrate to operate as an impedance transformer. The lengths of the steps are optimized to match over wide frequency bandwidth. The matching characteristics and the radiation performances are presented in this paper. © 2024 IEEE.

Hydrogen fuel is a flexible and clean secondary energy source or carrier enabling renewable energy transition. In existing markets, hydrogen is generated from coal, fossil fuels, and natural gas, resulting in brown or grey hydrogen. However, renewable energy sources can improve the color index of hydrogen. This research article presents the optimal and economical operation of a green hydrogen production plant with an electrolyzer, solar photovoltaic (PV), grid connection, renewable Energy Certificates (rECs), and Virtual Battery Ledger (VBL). rECs concept tracks the renewable energy generation from the PV plant. VBL keeps an accounting of rECs creation, expiration, and trading. rECs are expired when used by an electrolyzer or transacted on the block-chain enabled trading platform (e.g., Singapore Power rECs Marketplace). The study demonstrates the possibility of generating green hydrogen with an efficient virtual accounting method and energy management strategy. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents, compact wideband orthogonal polarized omnidirectional antenna. The proposed antenna is the combination of a Halo antenna with double-shell structure and a dipole antenna. The antenna characteristics are clarified by the simulation. To improve the directivity deviation between both polarizations, this antenna is loaded with two short elements on the opposite side of the aperture of the Halo antenna and parasitic element so as not to contact each other. As a result of the simulation, the characteristics of the proposed antenna are that the relative bandwidth is 9.0%, and the antenna height and diameter are 0.46λ0 and 0.14λ0 (λ0 the wavelength of the center operational frequency), respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Autonomous robots can solve different issues of delivery services, by guaranteeing less traffic congestion, less pollution, and lower operational costs. designing such type of delivery system based on autonomous robots requires the collaboration of different stakeholders, having different concerns: the store utilising the delivery service that is interested in costs and customer satisfaction, the municipality where the service is operated that is interested in the safety of the service, and the robotic company providing the service that is interested in all previous concerns. Our industrial partner from the robotic domain is designing this type of service in a smart town, and using a simulator for assessing different configurations providing different levels of performance. Since manually designing the configurations is time consuming for engineers, in this paper, we propose a search-based approach (All) that is able to explore the space of service configurations and find the optimal ones that show the tradeoff existing among the different concerns, so that stakeholders can make an informed decision. Since assessing one configuration requires to simulate the service multiple times over different types of customer requests, the approach suffers from scalability issues. Therefore, we propose two improvements of the approach that reduce the number of required simulations (IncrSim), and the duration of the simulation (IncrTime). Ex-periments on different settings show that IncrSim and IncrTime can find results as good as those of All in less time, and better than versions of All executed for the same budget. © 2023 IEEE.

Cellular distributed multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) is a system, in which a wide service area is divided into a number of base station (BS) coverage areas (cells), multiple user-clusters are formed by grouping neighborhood users together in each cell, and small-scale cluster-wise distributed MU-MIMO cooperative transmission/reception is performed in parallel. The use of cellular structure is to ensure the system scalability and the use of cluster-wise distributed MU-MIMO in parallel is to ensure reduced complexity spatial multiplexing of users in each cell. In such a system, the inter-cell interference and the inter-cluster interference are produced and limit the system capacity improvement achievable by distributed MU-MIMO. The inter-cluster interference can be suppressed by minimum mean square error (MMSE) pre/postcoding technique. So far, we have proposed interference aware MMSE (IA-MMSE) and interference suppression MMSE (IS-MMSE) techniques. The former considers the inter-cluster interference as an equivalent noise, while the latter takes the instantaneous channel correlation matrix of the inter-cluster interference into the MMSE weight vector. In this paper, we evaluate by computer simulation the uplink user capacities achievable with two MMSE techniques and show that the IS-MMSE provides higher user capacity than the IA-MMSE when compared at the same computational complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

Shapelets are time-series segments effective for classifying time-series instances. Joint learning of both classifiers and shapelets has been studied in recent years because this approach provides both superior classification performance and interpretable results. However, the optimization formulation is nonconvex, so bad local minima must be avoided. Very recently, this issue has been tackled by introducing Self-Paced Learning (SPL) into these methods. With the aim of intelligently discovering initial shapelets, we introduce two steps into this binary classification method so as to consistently optimize the same loss function of interest: optimizing discovery of discriminative initial shapelets from many time-series segments by using supervised feature selection, and jointly optimizing shapelets, model parameters, and latent instance weights in SPL. Using UCr datasets, we demonstrate improved area under the curve, and interpretability of shapelets where the number of shapelets is small. © 2021 by SIAM.

Autonomous robots have recently been employed for goods delivery, with the goal of reducing traffic congestion, pollution, and operational costs. The design of such a delivery service requires to select the number of robots, their operating hours, and speed. requirements from different stakeholders must be considered: customer satisfaction, cost, and safety. To assist with said design, our industry partner Panasonic is employing a search-based approach that tries to find service configurations that optimise the three requirements, on average, across different possible sets of customer requests. The obtained Pareto fronts of solutions show the trade-off existing among the different requirements. Such Pareto fronts, albeit very useful, do not always facilitate an informed decision for the stakeholders, for they provide too many solutions (some of them very similar to each other). To tackle this issue, in this paper we propose two approaches to prune and simplify Pareto fronts. Our approaches consider the standard deviation of objective values across the different sets of customer requests;the intuition is that, if two solutions (expressed in terms of average objective values) overlap based on their standard deviations, they can be considered similar. Based on this intuition, the two pruning approaches group similar solutions and select only one representative for each partition. We assessed these pruning methods on the Pareto fronts obtained with the search-based approach employed by Panasonic. We found that they can significantly reduce the size of the Pareto fronts while retaining a reasonable amount of their unpruned quality (measured in terms of Hypervolume). © 2023 IEEE.

The airborne debris of the brake pad composite pollutes the air and makes the environment hazardous. researchers develop organic and natural materials to replace such crucial materials without compromising the performance. Therefore, this research delves into the critical parameters of friction material: pressure, temperature fade, and breakaway torque conditions. The unique aspect of this study is the comprehensive analysis of Allium sativum's impact on the frictional performance of brake pads. The friction composites were scrutinized for their pressure and temperature fade at 5, 10, and 15 bar pressure at a constant speed of 660 +/- 10 rPM and 100 degrees C-200 degrees C, 200 degrees C-300 degrees C, and 300 degrees C-400 degrees C temperature at a constant pressure of 11.7 bar in a Krauss test machine for 25 drag braking applications. Further breakaway torque tests (the low speed at 1 rpm at a constant pressure of 11.7 bar) for 100 drag braking applications were conducted and analyzed. The morphological changes were extensively studied using SEM & EdAX analysis, and 3d microscopy was employed to analyze the brake pads' surface topography and surface roughness.
