This paper deals with joint channel estimation and pseudo-noise code acquisition for ultra-wideband communications. The estimation and acquisition in a realistic frequency selective channel, and in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise are based on the maximum-likelihood criterion. In particular, three systems are considered, namely, time-hopping, direct-sequence, and bi-orthogonal time-hopping CDMA digital systems. The efficiency of the synchronization process and the quality of the channel estimates are assessed and compared via analysis and simulations. Specifically, the performance of different systems are compared in terms of probability of correct synchronization, mean-square error of the channel estimates, and bit-error-rate.

Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.

Many graph mining and network analysis problems rely on the availability of the full network over a set of nodes. But inferring a full network is sometimes non-trivial if the raw data is in the form of many small patches or subgraphs, of the true network, and if there are ambiguities in the identities of nodes or edges in these patches. This may happen because of noise or because of the nature of data;for instance, in social networks, names are typically not unique. Graph assembly refers to the problem of reconstructing a graph from these many, possibly noisy, partial observations. Prior work suggests that graph assembly is essentially impossible in regimes of interest when the true graph is Erdos-Rényi. The purpose of the present paper is to show that a modest amount of clustering is sufficient to assemble even very large graphs. We introduce the G(n,p;q) random graph model, which is the random closure over all open triangles of a G(n,p) Erdos-Rényi, and show that this model exhibits higher clustering than an equivalent Erdos-Rényi . We focus on an extreme case of graph assembly: the patches are small (1-hop egonets) and are unlabeled. We show that in realistic regimes, graph assembly is fundamentally feasible, because we can identify, for every edge e, a subgraph induced by its neighbors that is unique and present in every patch containing e. Using this result, we build a practical algorithm that uses canonical labeling to reconstruct the original graph from noiseless patches. We also provide an achievability result for noisy patches, which are obtained by edge-sampling the original egonets.

Recursive projection-aggregation decoding of Reed-Muller codes

We propose a new class of efficient decoding algorithms for Reed-Muller (RM) codes over binary-input memoryless channels. The algorithms are based on projecting the code on its cosets, recursively decoding the projected codes (which are lower-order RM codes), and aggregating the reconstructions (e.g., using majority votes). We further provide extensions of the algorithms using list-decoding and code concatenation techniques. We run our main algorithm for AWGN channels and Binary Symmetric Channels at the short code length (≤ 1024) and low code rate (≤ 0.5) regime. Simulation results show that the new algorithm not only outperforms the previous decoding algorithms for RM codes, it also outperforms the optimal decoder for polar codes (SCL+CRC) with the same parameters by a wide margin. The performance of the new algorithm for RM codes in those regimes is in fact close to that of the maximal likelihood decoder. Finally, the new decoder naturally allows for parallel implementations. The capacity of a secondary link in spectrum sharing systems has been recently investigated in fading environments. In particular, the secondary transmitter is allowed to adapt its power and rate to maximize its capacity subject to the constraint of maximum interference level allowed at the primary receiver. In most of the literature, it was assumed that estimates of the channel state information (CSI) of the secondary link and the interference level are made available at the secondary transmitter via an infinite-resolution feedback links between the secondary/primary receivers and the secondary transmitter. However, the assumption of having infinite resolution feedback links is not always practical as it requires an excessive amount of bandwidth. In this paper we develop a framework for optimizing the performance of the secondary link in terms of the average spectral efficiency assuming quantized CSI available at the secondary transmitter. We develop a computationally efficient algorithm for optimally quantizing the CSI and finding the optimal power and rate employed at the cognitive transmitter for each quantized CSI level so as to maximize the average spectral efficiency. Our results give the number of bits required to represent the CSI sufficient to achieve almost the maximum average spectral efficiency attained using full knowledge of the CSI for Rayleigh fading channels.

Modern powerful reconfigurable systems are suited in the implementation of various data-stream, dataparallel, and other applications. An application that needs real-time, fast, and reliable data processing is the global positioning system (GPS)-based vehicle tracking system (VTS). In this paper, we build on a recently produced VTS (The Aram Locator) offering a system-on-chip (SOC) replacement of the current microcontroller-based implementation. The proposed SOC is built on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) promising a cheaper design, a more cohesive architecture, a faster processing time and an enhanced system interaction. Different designs, and their hardware implementations, are proposed with different levels of integration. Performance analysis and evaluation of the investigated designs are included. This paper proposes a Complex-Valued Neural Network (CVNN) for glucose sensing in milli-meter wave (mmWave). Based on the propagation characteristics of millimeter wave in glucose medium, we obtain the S21 parameter of glucose with the concentration range of 0-300mg/dL in the 60-80 GHz frequency band by High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) simulations. Then we combine the sensing model with a neural network to detect and predict the glucose concentration relying on the learning ability of the neural network. In the prediction of the concentration of unknown samples, the absolute error between the predicted value and the true value is within 5mg/dL, which confirms the ability of the proposed CVNN model. © 2023 ACM.

In 2018, around 22,000 people were killed in road accidents in Thailand and more than 80% of road accidents involved motorcycles. There are several reasons and one of them is motorcycles driving in the wrong direction. Our paper proposes a system for road surveillance to detect and track moving vehicle's direction on two-way traffic roads from CCTV viewpoint using deep learning where the roadside noise is filtered out. The system can determine whether the vehicles drive in the correct direction in their lane. In this case, we will focus on motorcycles. To set up the system, there are two main steps: draw the area of interest and validate the correct direction. In the direction validation process, we detect and track vehicles by using YOLOv4-tiny and Deep SORT tracking algorithm. The system returns a satisfactory and accurate result for detecting direction without noise, such as moving objects on the sidewalk or moving vehicles in an unwanted area. © 2021 IEEE.

In this paper, we develop an approach for robust model reference adaptive control of continuous-time MIMO linear dynamical systems in the presence of output disturbance. In comparison with earlier approaches in the literature, the proposed approach has the advantage that the assumption of knowing an upper bound of the disturbance is removed. The development of the approach relies heavily on Lyapunov's stability criterion and the dead-zone technique. The approach is applied to a numerical example of an articulated suspension system subject to output disturbance. Copyright © 2007 SoftMotor Ltd.

This paper describes a collaboration between a sophomore/junior-level lab component in an electrical and computer engineering (ECE) course and a junior-level technical writing course within the Mississippi State University Bagley College of engineering's Shackouls Technical communication program (TCP). Grading for labs with weekly writing assignments poses challenges previously overlooked by collaborations between ECE and the TCP. Since lengthy reports are required weekly for the Digital Devices and Logic Design (ECE 3714) lab component, grade turnaround must be quick and can become extremely burdensome for teaching assistants, many of whom struggle with writing themselves due to lack of confidence or ESL challenges. This collaboration differs from other ECE-TCP collaborations significantly in that it utilizes a lab-grading system that combines traditional, non-quantitative rubrics and set penalties for mechanical/stylistic errors to expedite the grading process while retaining grading reliability among TAs. Five specific areas have been defined within each rubric to make up the total percentage of the grade, with the point values changing to reflect the focus of each lab. Topics discussed include an overview of analytic versus holistic grading and the rationale behind the authors' grading approach, previous ECE-TCP collaborations, the combined rubric-set penalties grading system for ECE 3714 with sample grading materials provided, quantitative and qualitative assessments of the newly implemented grading approach, and potential pitfalls of the authors' grading approach. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
