Recent research on joint source-channel coding (JSCC) for wireless communications has achieved great success owing to the employment of deep learning (DL). However, the existing work on DL based JSCC usually trains the designed network to operate under a specific signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, without taking into account that the SNR level during the deployment stage may differ from that during the training stage. A number of networks are required to cover the scenario with a broad range of SNRs, which is computational inefficiency (in the training stage) and requires large storage. To overcome these drawbacks our paper proposes a novel method called Attention DL based JSCC (ADJSCC) that can successfully operate with different SNR levels during transmission. This design is inspired by the resource assignment strategy in traditional JSCC, which dynamically adjusts the compression ratio in source coding and the channel coding rate according to the channel SNR. This is achieved by resorting to attention mechanisms because these are able to allocate computing resources to more critical tasks. Instead of applying the resource allocation strategy in traditional JSCC, the ADJSCC uses the channel-wise soft attention to scaling features according to SNR conditions. We compare the ADJSCC method with the state-of-the-art DL based JSCC method through extensive experiments to demonstrate its adaptability, robustness and versatility. Continuous and accurate monitoring of agricultural landscapes is crucial for understanding crop phenology and responding to climatic and anthropogenic changes. However, the widely used optical satellite remote sensing is limited by revisit cycles and weather conditions, leading to gaps in agricultural monitoring. To address these limitations, we designed and deployed a Near Surface Camera (NSCam) Network across China, and explored its application in agricultural land monitoring and achieving climate-smart agriculture (CSA). By analyzing the image data captured by the NSCam Network, we can accurately assess long-term or abrupt agricultural land changes. According to the preliminary monitoring results, integrating NSCam data with remote sensing imagery greatly enhances the temporal details and accuracy of agricultural monitoring, aiding agricultural managers in making informed decisions. The impacts of abnormal weather conditions and human activities on agricultural land, which are not captured by remote sensing imagery, can be complemented by incorporating our NSCam Network. The successful implementation of this method underscores its potential for broader application in CSA, promoting resilient and sustainable agricultural practices.

Current research in high value-added manufacturing processes, such as the Micro Injection Molding (μIM) process, focuses on the monitoring of the machine process data., which could potentially affect the quality of the end product. Up until now, machine process monitoring has been limited to the machine level and has often bypassed the ambient environmental factors and pre manufacturing factors, which could have direct impact on the end product quality. In light of this, extending the monitoring of high value-added processes to include the ambient manufacturing environment would have numerous benefits in terms of process monitoring accuracy, material condition and product quality. In this paper, we present a novel Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) for monitoring a high value-added manufacturing process and its ambient environment using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The proposed architecture applies the SOA to a network of wireless sensor nodes installed in the uIM machine and the industrial micro-molding environment. Here we present; the generic architectural design, system integration, user interfaces, and initial test results for an experimental testbed system.

Network performance evaluation tools play important roles in network researches. However, most tools will cause highly CPU utilization and high monetary cost. Moreover, it is not easy to set up a test environment anytime and anywhere. To solve this problem, we build a lightweight network performance evaluation tool, SDNort, through the OpenFlow architecture. Through our evaluation tool, users can generate high throughput traffic to testing targets and collect related statistics via OpenFlow commands. Furthermore, users can easily customize testing packets for application evaluation. Finally, we virtualize our work as a VNF (Virtual Network Function) and deployed to a cloud system.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. Healthcare solutions through the introduction of wearable healthcare devices are benefitting from Internet of Things technology. Though these small form-factor wearable devices promise great benefits, guaranteeing long device operating lifetime is yet the biggest challenge due to high-energy consumption. In this paper, a reduced hardware architecture system-on-chip targeting digital block design was proposed higher energy efficiency. The design has been verified by synthesizing into FPGA and implemented in silicon based on Silterra 180nm process. Results show that the proposed design achieved reduction up to 24% of leakage power and 15% of dynamic power reduction over reference design. In addition, 24.3% of excessive area was reduced by using the proposed reduced hardware architecture technique.

LTE and WiMAX are the most important radio access technologies in the fourth generation mobile networks providing broadband access. The technologies bring strong QoS support, especially for multimedia services such as real-time video streaming, requiring bounded packet loss rate and delay. To reach these goals, effective packet scheduling schemes are needed to allocate radio resources. The function is fundamental and very challenging, particularly when considering system level performance and QoS requirements from users. In this paper, we present a low-complexity field-tested QoS downlink scheduler. Besides proportional fairness, the novel mechanism performs unified resource evaluation across traffic flows honoring individual QoS parameters. A resource multiplier is designed to preserve a relative weighting ratio for real-time traffic and prevent low priority flows from starvation. The waste of resources due to block-based allocation is also eliminated. The testing in both lab and field environments shows satisfactory overall throughput gain and most importantly the effective weighted distribution of resources across diverse traffic flows.

The channel quality indicator (CQI) is an important LTE parameter that is used to cope with the channel variations. The accuracy of the CQI calculation depends on the channel and the noise variance estimations. In this paper, we study the effect of the noise variance estimation on the CQI calculation. We assess the performance of a widely-used CQI algorithm, the mutual information effective SINR mapping (MIESM), using two different methods for the noise variance estimation. The first method is a cyclic-prefix (CP) (time) based estimation and the second one is a pilot (frequency) based estimation. It is shown that the CP-based method is more robust to the channel estimation error compared to the pilot-based one, and can provide more accurate results especially in the cases where the number of pilots are much less than the CP length (e.g. for small bandwidth). However, the pilot-based method is much more robust to the presence of interference signals in the LTE band, a common scenario that is a part of the LTE-standard conformance tests.

In modern VLSI designs, timing closure has become a challenging and tedious task for the designers due to the fact that the number of design logic gates led to an exponential increase in the number of timing paths. PrimeTime from Synopsys is used to perform Static Timing Analysis and to generate a timing report in the form of large size text file; hence, data analysis is a complex task for the designer. This work presents a web-based text-mining software tool based on text-mining and web-based reporting techniques. It consists of two parts, the Perl software parser file in the user part, while MySQL and Apache servers in the server part. This tool parses Synopsys PrimeTime timing report and provides analysis services for team collaboration, clock skew and path constraints calculations, paths categorization and paths distribution in well-organized tables, and presents data on website pages.

Three types of antenna arrays such as uniform linear, uniform rectangular arrays and uniform cube arrays are used in the transmitter and their corresponding channel capacity on several paths in the indoor environment are calculated. Numerical results show that uniform linear arrays is better than that for uniform rectangular arrays and uniform cube arrays system with and without interference.
