Entanglement purification for high-dimensional multipartite systems

We propose an entanglement purification protocol for high-dimensional multipartite systems. In the protocol we can select a subensemble in a pure generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. This post-selection can be made by detecting the noise which contaminated the initial pure ensemble when the systems passed through a noisy environment. For the detection of noise we investigate the correlation properties of GHZ states and analyze their possible errors due to a noisy environment. We show that the protocol presented is more efficient than a simple generalization of the purification protocol for a bipartite state in high dimensions.

Nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) provides flexible multiresolution, anisotropy and directional expansion for images. Compared with the foremost contourlet transform, it is shift-invariant and can overcome the pseudo-Gibbs phenomena around singularities. In addition, coefficients of NSCT are dependent on their neighborhood coefficients in the local window and cousin coefficients in directional subbands. In this paper, region energy and cousin correlation are defined to represent the neighbors and cousins information, respectively. Salience measure, as the combination of region energy and cousin correlation, is defined to obtain fused coefficients in the high-frequency NSCT domain. First, source images are decomposed into subimages via NSCT. Secondly, salience measure is computed. Thirdly, salience measure-maximum-based rule and average rule are employed to obtain high-frequency and low-frequency coefficients, respectively. Finally, fused image is reconstructed by inverse NSCT. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms wavelet-based fusion algorithms and contourlet transform-based fusion algorithms.

A Navy funded outreach program directed at increasing the interest of middle school students in pursuing careers in science and engineering has been subjected to a comprehensive mixed mode evaluation process conducted by a professional educational program evaluator. The evaluation process and its implementation in terms of the comparison-group studies and mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) data collection methods are described as well as the logic models which underlie this process. Some results are described and the paper closes with a statement of the challenges faced by the evaluator. © American Society for Engineering education, 2007.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental research Systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. This paper explores the development of and pilot study done on an online textbook and research tool, based on the book, "how to model it", by Starfield, Smith and Bleloch. In many engineering design texts, the solution(s) to design problems are provided in the pages following the proposed problem. With this online system, students are able to read only a portion of the text, and then must complete one or more tasks for which they submit a response to the system. This approach forces the students to begin practicing the engineering design process, rather than simply reading about someone else's design process. As a research tool, the computerized method of data gathering addresses the issue of increasing sampling frequency without much larger investment in research time, as no transcription is required. The small pilot study showed students' responses included data on their design process thinking as well as their proposed solution to the problems

Naive Bayesian spam email filters are a wellknown and powerful type of filters that can easily be induced from a dataset of sample cases. However, the problem of segmenting words for Chinese email restricts its performance. In this paper, we present a Bayesian Chinese spam filter based on cross N-gram. This method does not need to carry on segmenting words for Chinese emails, so that it can avoid to be restricted by inaccurate words segmenting. It also needn't to install segmenting word dictionary and is easy to install in the user terminal to construct an individualized spam filter since the space and time efficiency are improved. The restriction on independence assumption of naive bayes method is relaxed in some degree. The results of experiments show that the proposed method can acquire a high accuracy ratio at low cost.

This paper reports preliminary evidence that a significant number of engineering students possess robust misconceptions about rate processes such as transfer of heat even after years of study in thermal and transport sciences including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. Data from the Thermal and Transport Concept Inventory (TTCI) currently under development and additional questions specifically written for the present study are reported and analyzed. Results indicate the presence of a persistent misconception about the relationship between the rate of heat transfer and amount of energy transferred in processes of engineering interest. We use the emergent theory developed by Chi and colleagues to propose a possible explanation for these findings. © American Society for Engineering education, 2006.

Two research questions motivated this study: "What important concepts in electric circuits and engineering mechanics do students find difficult to learn?" and "How can we describe students' mental models of the concepts identified in question 1?" This paper discusses the process used to identify difficult concepts in engineering mechanics and electric circuits, the results ofthat identification process, and the results of interviews to uncover the mental models engineering students use to explain these concepts. This study, part of the Center for the Advancement in Engineering education's "Scholarship of Learning Engineering" element, builds on previous work in thermal and transport science and allows comparisons among difficult concepts in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. © American Society for Engineering education, 2006.

The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering education, 2006.
