The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering education, 2006.

Analysis of growth phase regulated KatA and CatE and their physiological roles in determining hydrogen peroxide resistance inAgrobacterium tumefaciens

Agrobacterium tumefaciens possesses two catalases, a bifunctional catalase-peroxidase, KatA and a homologue of a growth phase regulated monofunctional catalase, CatE. In stationary phase cultures and in cultures entering stationary phase, total catalase activity increased 2-fold while peroxidase activity declined. katA and catE were found to be independently regulated in a growth phase dependent manner. KatA levels were highest during exponential phase and declined as cells entered stationary phase, while CatE was detectable at early exponential phase and increased during stationary phase. Only small increases in H 2 O 2 resistance levels were detected as cells entering stationary phase. The katA mutant was more sensitive to H 2 O 2 than the parental strain during both exponential and stationary phase. Inactivation of catE alone did not significantly change the level of H 2 O 2 resistance. However, the katA catE double mutant was more sensitive to H 2 O 2 during both exponential and stationary phase than either of the single catalase mutants. The data indicated that KatA plays the primary role and CatE acts synergistically in protecting A. tumefaciens from H 2 O 2 toxicity during all phases of growth. Catalase-peroxidase activity (KatA) was required for full H 2 O 2 resistance. The expression patterns of the two catalases in A. tumefaciens reflect their physiological roles in the protection against H 2 O 2 toxicity, which are different from other bacteria.

One of the main disadvantage of multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) signals is the high peak power of the transmitted signals which limits their applications. To account for this issue, we provide a simple signal processing for reducing the high crest factor (CF) of MC-CDMA signals. Using this modified MC-CDMA signal, the high CF due to Walsh spreading sequences can be mitigated without explicit side information and degradation in the detection performance. A pair of initial studies using an evolutionary approach to curricular reform that capitalize on the strength of both the top-down and bottom-up model, and was built on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) reform literature are performed. This approach develop a pairwise linkage among strategic courses in the engineering curricula to promote curricular integration. The results of trial produced higher course grades in both course grades in both courses, though the change was most significant for the mechanical engineering course. Full evaluation of the project cannot be obtained until the study is continued to include statics students who also participated when they were enrolled in the computer science course.

This session relates directly to this year's conference theme Sparking Synergies: Bringing research and Practice Together as it brings together researchers from different disciplines (information science and educational technology) to discuss current issues and trends related to Web usage across student populations. “Complex design problems require more knowledge than any single person possesses” (Arias, Eden, Fischer, Gorman, and Scharff, 2000, p. 84), thus each panelist will contribute highlights of his or her current research regarding the design, information, and pedagogical, needs of specific student populations (K-12 to higher education). After the panelists have presented their findings Diane Nahl will intertwine the threads of the panelists' conversations and, with the audience's assistance, begin to weave a fabric to uncover common usability issues.

We review the evidence from a number of surveys in which our NetLab has been involved about the extent to which the Internet is transforming or enhancing community. The studies show that the Internet is used for connectivity locally as well as globally, although the nature of its use varies in different countries. Internet use is adding on to other forms of communication, rather than replacing them. Internet use is reinforcing the pre-existing turn to societies in the developed world that are organized around networked individualism rather than group or local solidarities. The result has important implications for civic involvement.

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial Engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

He attended Duke University graduating in May 1974 with a bachelor of science in zoology. He was commissioned in the Navy in May 1974 through the NROTC Program at Duke. Rear Adm. Hamilton's sea tours include electronics material officer and combat information center officer in USS Hawkins (DD 873) (1974 to 1976) fire control officer and missile officer in USS Coontz (DDG 40) (1976 to1978) operations officer in USS Callaghan (DDG 994) (1981 to 1984) executive officer USS Fox (CG 33) (1986 to 1988) and commanding officer USS O'Brien (DD 975) (1991 to 1993). Rear Adm. Hamilton's shore tours include anti-submarine warfare program analyst and administrative assistant to director Program Resource Appraisal Division (OP-91) Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (1984 to 1986) head Aegis Destroyer Section (OP-355F) and financial coordinator Aegis Cruiser Destroyer Branch Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (1988 to 1990) and military staff specialist for naval war-fare in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition and Technology) (1994 to 1996). In May 1996 Rear Adm. Hamilton became program manager for the arsenal ship which was designed to provide massed precision fires in support of Fleet commander's warfighting requirements. After completing the first two design phases and passing significant acquisition reform lessons learned to the DD 21 Program Office Rear Adm. Hamilton closed down the Arsenal Ship Program in March 1998. From April 1998 to February 2000 Rear Adm. Hamilton served as deputy for Fleet in the Program Executive Office Theater Surface Combatants (PEO TSC-F). In this position he was responsible for Fleet Introduction and Lifetime Support of 120 surface combatants (DDG 51 CG 47 DDG 993 DD 963 FFG 7). Rear Adm. Hamilton served as program executive officer for Surface Strike (PEO (S)) from February 2000 until November 2002. As PEO (S) he managed the Zumwalt-class DD 21/DD (X) N

The challenges which stood as an obstacle to the naval force development are discussed. The main challenge in the national security environment is to be virtually available anywhere in the world at the behest of the national command. It is observed that in surface warefare coast guard has the most applicability and expansion of their surveillance area will help in engaging other vessels away from the manned platform. It is also observed that the relationship with mission modularity and the growth between the coast guard and the navy has attracted interest among the international community.
