In this paper, we present simulation results for the bit error rate (BER) performance and the fading penalty of a BPSK subcarrier intensity modulation (BPSK-SIM) free-space optical (FSO) communication link in a log-normal atmospheric turbulence model. The results obtained are based on the Monte-Carlo simulation. Multiple subcarrier modulation schemes offer increased system throughput and require no knowledge of the channel fading in deciding what symbol has been received. In an atmospheric channel with a fading strength σ l 2 of 0.1 obtaining a BER of 10 -6 using a 2-subcarrier system will require a signal-tonoise (SNR) of 23.1 dB. The required SNR increases with the fading strength and at a BER of 10 -9 the fading penalty due to the atmospheric turbulence is ~ 41 dB for σ l 2 = 0.9. The comparative studies of the OOK and BPSK-SIM schemes showed that for similar electrical SNR, BPSK-SIM offered improved performance across all range of turbulence variance.

Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system. © 2009 IEEE.

This work presents a study undertaken to characterise the FINISTERRAE supercomputer, one of the biggest NUMA systems in Europe. The main objective was to determine the performance effect of bus contention and cache coherency as well as the suitability of porting strategies regarding irregular codes in such a complex architecture. Results show that: (1) cores which share a socket can be considered as independent processors in this context; (2) for big data sizes, the effect of sharing a bus degrades the final performance but masks the cache coherency effects; (3) the NUMA factor (remote to local memory latency ratio) is an important factor on irregular codes and (4) the default kernel allocation policy is not optimal in this system. These results allow us to understand the behaviour of thread-to-core mappings and memory allocation policies.

Although Web services are generally envisioned as being stateless, some of them are implicitly stateful. The reason is that the Web services often work as front-ends to enterprise systems and are used in a session-oriented way by the clients. Contrary to the case of stateless services, for a stateful Web service there exist constraints to the order in which the operations of the service may be invoked. However, specification of such constraints is not a standard part of a Web service interface, and compliance with such constraints is not checked by the standard Web service development tools. Therefore, we propose in this paper to extend a web service interface by a constraint definition that is based on behavior protocols. Also, we implemented a tool that checks whether a given BPEL code complies with the constraints of all stateful web services it communicates with. The key idea behind the tool is to translate the BPEL code into Java and then to check the Java program using Java PathFinder with behavior protocol extension.

Recent advances in mobile computing and wireless communication technologies are enabling high mobility and flexibility of anytime, anywhere service access for mobile users. As a result, network connections of such users often span over heterogeneous networking environments consisting of wired and wireless networking technologies. Both network heterogeneity and user mobility make the securing of data transmission over heterogeneous networks challenging and complex. In this paper, we focus on the challenge of providing secure end-to-end network transmissions to wireless mobile users. To minimize service interruption during ongoing secure sessions of mobile users, we present the design and implementation of an approach based on the well-known Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) standard. We conducted a performance evaluation of our implementation using a Voice over IP (VoIP) application over an actual network testbed. Our empirical performance results demonstrate a packet loss improvement of 17% to 34% (for various VoIP packet sizes) and a handoff delay improvement of almost 24% validating the high efficiency of our proposed approach. © 2007 Taylor & Francis.

The "Oncosimulator" is at the same time a concept of multilevel integrative cancer and (treatment affected) normal tissue biology, an algorithmic construct and a software tool which aims at supporting the clinician in the process of optimizing cancer treatment on the patient individualized basis. Additionally it is a platform for better understanding and exploring the natural phenomenon of cancer as well as training doctors and interested patients alike. In order to achieve all of these goals it has to undergo a thorough clinical optimization and validation process. This is one of the goals of the European Commission funded integrated project "ACGT: Advancing Clinicogenomic Trials on Cancer". Nephroblastoma (Wilms' tumor) and breast cancer have been selected to serve as two paradigms to clinically specify and evaluate the "Oncosimulator" as well as the emerging domain of in silico oncology. ©2007 IEEE.
