Cost function is an essential part in Application Layer Multicast (ALM) routing algorithms. It is from a cost function that we can calculate links' costs and then build the data delivery tree for multicasting. Unfortunately, cost function remains an almost untouched research area in ALM routing. In this research, we propose a new multi-variable cost function considering various end-to-end QoS parameters simultaneously. The mathematical derivation process is also described in details so that one can apply it to obtain other multi-variable cost functions according to their specific requirements. The newly proposed multi-variable cost function can avoid congestion before it happens, preventing the data delivery tree from being frequently or unnecessarily changed while still be adaptable to the dynamic requirements of different applications. With theoretical analysis, we have proved that the new cost function can provide better performance for ALM routing algorithms compared to conventional cost functions.

In this paper, we propose an iterative design approach to jointly optimize probing signal waveforms and a receive filter bank for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar under a constant modulus constraint. The design goals are to approximate a desired beampattern and to minimize the auto/cross- correlation levels of the probing signal waveforms for different time lags and between different spatial angles. Since the overall design problem is nonconvex, we propose to optimize the transmit probing signals and receive filter bank separately and alternately. The optimization of receive filter bank is a standard least squares problem, while the optimization of the constant modulus transmit signal waveforms is a norm-constrained least squares problem which can be approximately solved using a low-rank semidefinite relaxation procedure. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach through a simulation example.

Cognitive radio (CR) has been considered as a promising technology to improve the spectrum utilization. In this paper we analyze the capacity of a CR network with average received interference power constraints. Under the assumptions of uniform node placements and a simple power control scheme, the maximum transmit power of a target CR transmitter is characterized by its cumulative distribution function (CDF). We study two CR scenarios for future applications. The first scenario is called the CR based central access network, which aims at providing broadband access to CR devices. In the second scenario, the so-called CR assisted virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network, CR is used to improve the access capability of a cellular system. The uplink ergodic channel capacities of both scenarios are derived and analyzed with an emphasis on understanding the impact of numbers of primary users and CR users on the capacity. Numerical and simulation results suggest that the CR based central access network is more suitable for less-populated rural areas where a relatively low density of primary receivers is expected;while the CR assisted virtual MIMO network performs better in urban environments with a dense population of mobile CR users. © 2006 IEEE.

The 10th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems & Applications (HotMobile 09) was held in Santa Cruz, California, US between February 23-24, 2009. The event was attended by a large number of researchers from Asia, Europe, and North America. Two poster sessions were organized at the event, including a general poster session and a demo session. Another poster session was organized for dissertation research presented in the Doctoral Consortium, which was a forum for doctoral students to get comments on their research efforts. The workshop format and size also encouraged better quality discussions and interaction among researchers from academic institutions and the industry. Ryan Scudellari, Duke University presented a paper, called 'We Saw Each Other on the Subway: Secure, Anonymous Proximity-Based Missed Connections' in the first session that showed the way local services had the potential to find and increase interaction among people.

Crosstalk between neighbouring wire pairs in multi-pair copper cables is an important disturbance, which essentially limits the transmission quality and the throughput of such cables. For high-rate transmission, often the strong near-end crosstalk (NEXT) disturbance is avoided or suppressed and only the far-end crosstalk (FEXT) remains as crosstalk influence. In this contribution the FEXT impact in iteratively detected MIMO-OFDM transmission schemes is studied. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts are used for analyzing and optimizing the convergence behaviour of the iterative demapping and decoding. Our results show that FEXT is not necessarily a limiting factor if appropriate signal processing strategies are used. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We study wireless multicasting from two sources to two destinations with the assistance of a single half-duplex relay. The objective is to evaluate the throughput and error performance of different analog and digital relay schemes with linear network coding at the relay. The analog relay node forwards either a scaled version of the received signal to the destinations, or alternatively, first filters the received signals to generate a linear Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimate, which is subsequently forwarded. The digital relay scheme first detects the source transmissions, combines the packets with a network code, and forwards the resulting symbols to the destinations. For all schemes the destinations recover the source and relay signals by first applying linear MMSE filters, followed by decoding of the source bits. The performance of the schemes are compared in terms of normalized throughput (bits per channel use accounting for the delay due to the relay) and uncoded error probability, given a normalized power constraint. Both narrowband and wideband transmission schemes are considered. Our results show that the analog relay schemes outperform the digital network coding scheme with respect to both throughput and error probability because of error propagation through the relay. Numerical results are presented, which illustrate throughput-reliability trade-offs for all schemes considered. ©2009 IEEE.

A fixed-throughput vector precoding (VP) approach specially suitable for hardware implementation in field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices is presented in this paper. The algorithm, which is based on the sphere encoder (SE), is divided into two main stages: at the preprocessing stage, the columns of the precoding matrix are ordered following any of the ordering approaches that have been proposed in this paper. Secondly, the search tree is configured so as to yield an appropriate bit error rate (BER) performance. Simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that of the SE, whereas its complexity is significantly smaller. © EURASIP, 2009.

Assessment of depth of anesthesia using principal component analysis

A new approach to estimating level of uncon-sciousness based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is proposed. The Electroen-cephalogram (EEG) data was captured in both Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and operating room, using different anesthetic drugs. Assuming the central nervous system as a 20-tuple source, window length of 20 seconds is applied to EEG. The mentioned window is considered as 20 nonoverlapping mixed-signals (epoch). PCA algorithm is applied to these epochs, and larg-est remaining eigenvalue (LRE) and smallest remaining eigenvalue (SRE) were extracted. Correlation between extracted parameters (LRE and SRE) and depth of anesthesia (DOA) was measured using Prediction probability (PK). The results show the superiority of SRE than LRE in predicting DOA in the case of ICU and isoflurane, and the slight superiority of LRE than SRE in propofol induction. Finally, a mixture model containing both LRE and SRE could predict DOA as well as Relative Beta Ratio (RBR), which expresses the high capability of the proposed PCA based method in estimating DOA.
