An algorithm for robust transmission of compressed 3-D mesh data is proposed in this work. In the encoder, we partition a 3-D mesh adaptively according to the surface complexity, and then encode each partition separately to reduce the error propagation effect. To encode joint boundaries compactly, we propose a boundary edge collapse rule, which also enables the decoder to zip partitions seamlessly. In the decoder, an error concealment scheme is employed to improve the visual quality of corrupted partitions. The concealment algorithm utilizes the information in neighboring partitions and reconstructs the lost surface based on the semi-regular connectivity reconstruction and the polynomial interpolation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides a good rendering quality even in severe error conditions.

In this paper, an efficient VLSI architecture for the computation of the convolution-based discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is presented. The proposed architecture employing two processing elements and a single buffer in a pipeline mode enhances the processing time by appropriately decomposing overall computations and equally distributing them between the two processing elements. The data flow both within and in-between the processing elements are streamlined making use of the buffer and the employing multiple input data paths within the processing elements. The parallelism of operations carried by the computational blocks in each processing element is made more effective by equalizing the data paths used in these blocks. HSPICE and Verilog simulation results are presented to show that a circuit designed based on the proposed architecture in comparison with other existing architectures is fast and efficient for the DWT computation with a modest decrease in the area. © 2055 IEEE.

Retrieving similar video clips from large video database requires high query efficiency, precision and recall, which remains a challenging problem since the traditional query algorithms arc inefficient and time-consuming. In this paper, we adopt the high-dimensional index structure Vector-Approximation File (VA-File) to organize the video database, and propose a new similarity measure which takes the temporal order among the video representations into account to improve the accuracy of query. Based on the VA-File and similarity measure, a new video clip retrieval algorithm is proposed in our method to achieve high query efficiency by using restricted sliding window to construct candidate video clips. Experimental results show that the proposed video retrieval method is efficient and effective.

In this paper, the cyclostationarity of over-sampled signal in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems is studied. A blind symbol timing and carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm is presented based on the cyclic correlation. The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient, and asymptotically unbiased and consistent. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to some of the existing methods in terms of the mean square error (MSE) of the estimate.

The design of a class of broadband arrays with frequency invariant beam patterns is studied and a simplified version of the design method employing multi-dimensional Fourier transforms is proposed with detailed account of each step. In the design examples, we give a mathematical explanation for the failure of this method in the lower frequencies. For a design with main beam pointing to a direction other than the broadside, the frequency invariant property is not good and two solutions for this problem are provided.

Improvement of sound reproduction in rooms by signal processing techniques has been studied seriously for more than twenty years. This tutorial paper reviews the theory and design of codes for hiding or embedding information in signals such as images, video, audio, graphics, and text. Such codes have also been called watermarking codes;they can be used in a variety of applications, including copyright protection for digital media, content authentication, media forensics, data binding, and covert communications. Some of these applications imply the presence of an adversary attempting to disrupt the transmission of information to the receiver;other applications involve a noisy, generally unknown, communication channel. Our focus is on the mathematical models, fundamental principles, and code design techniques that are applicable to data hiding. The approach draws from basic concepts in information theory, coding theory, game theory, and signal processing, and is illustrated with applications to the problem of hiding data in images. © 2005 IEEE.

Color correlogram for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) characterizes not only the color distribution of pixels, but also the spatial correlation of pairs of colors. Color not only reflects the material of surface, but also varies considerably with the change of illumination, the orientation of the surface, and the viewing geometry of the camera. The invariance to these environmental factors is not considered in most of the color features in color based CBIR including the color correlogram. However, pixels changed their color with almost same proportions with change of environmental factors. This fact is taken into consideration, and new algorithm is proposed. The color cooccurrence matrix for different spatial distances is defined based on the maximum/minimum of color component between the three components (R,G,B) of a pixel. The proposed algorithm has less number of features, and the change of illumination, etc. is also taken into account. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents an efficient video filtering scheme and its implementation in a field-programmable logic device (FPLD). Since the proposed nonlinear, spatiotemporal filtering scheme is based on order statistics, its efficient implementation benefits from a bit-serial realization. The utilization of both the spatial and temporal correlation characteristics of the processed video significantly increases the computational demands on this solution, and thus, implementation becomes a significant challenge. Simulation studies reported in this paper indicate that the proposed pipelined bit-serial FPLD filtering solution can achieve speeds of up to 97.6 Mpixels/s and consumes 1700 to 2700 logic cells for the speed-optimized and area-optimized versions, respectively. Thus, the filter area represents only 6.6 to 10.5% of the Altera STRATIX EP1S25 device available on the Altera Stratix DSP evaluation board, which has been used to implement a prototype of the entire real-time vision system. As such, the proposed adaptive video filtering scheme is both practical and attractive for real-time machine vision and surveillance systems as well as conventional video and multimedia applications.
