Gene selection, cancer classification and functional gene classification are three main concerns and interests by biologists for cancer detection, cancer classification, and understanding the functions of genes from the molecular level of tissues, where the large number of genes and relatively small number of experiments in gene expression data generate a great challenge. After a brief introduction of support vector machine(SVM) for classification, this paper presents recent SVM approaches for gene selection, cancer classification and functional gene classification followed by analysis on the advantages and limitations of SVM on these applications. © 2003 IEEE.

The multiple-pronunciation lexicon (MPL) is very important to model the pronunciation variations for spontaneous speech recognition. But the introduction of MPL brings out two problems. First, the MPL will increase the among-lexicon confusion and degrade the recognizer's performance. Second, the MPL needs more data with phonetic transcription so as to cover as many surface forms as possible. Accordingly, two solutions are proposed, they are the context-dependent weighting method and the iterative forced-alignment based transcription method. The use of them can compensate what the MPL causes and improve the overall performance. Experiments across a naturally spontaneous speech database show that the proposed methods are effective and better than other methods.

A novel technique to obtain a rate- and processor-optimal schedule for a fully-static data flow graph (DFG) onto a multiprocessor system is presented. In this technique, Floyd-Warshall's shortest path algorithm is used to evaluate the relative firing times of the nodes of the given DFG. Despite its implementation simplicity, the proposed technique has a lower time complexity than all the previously proposed techniques. The technique is tested on various benchmark problems to demonstrate its optimal performance.

A novel multipath channel estimation method is proposed to solve a special problem that occurs in channel estimation for ETSI's WCDMA uplink communications, where scrambling is introduced in the dedicated physical channels. The delays and complex amplitudes of the multipath components are estimated. A matched filter is employed for each user to carry out the despreading and unscrambling simultaneously. The filter coefficients are a combination of the OVSF code and the preliminary scrambling code for the user. An averaging operation reduces the noise and interference, and thus improves the estimates. © 1999 IEEE.

In binary FSK modulation schemes the transition between the two frequencies f/sub 0/ representing a ZERO and f/sub 1/ representing a ONE is governed by the shape of the input pulse as it makes its transition from a ZERO to a ONE. Through the use of an optimum filter, it is possible to shape the pulse in such a way as to maximize the speed of transition from f/sub 0/ to f/sub 1/ while maintaining signal energy outside of the channel to specified small levels. In this paper, we describe a procedure for finding optimum filters for several important types of FSK modulation.

Retrieving images in a database based on user specified colors is a popular low-level retrieval technique. However, the available systems today do not easily allow for a user or a specified query to tag certain colors as unwanted in the query result to ultimately be excluded in the query. Specifically, color histogram techniques do not allow for a direct approach to excluding colors and would require a separate query stage to filter out images containing unwanted colors. In this paper we present our vector-based scheme to image retrieval using a multidimensional query space which naturally accepts the exclusion of specified colors in the overall similarity measure. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

An interactive color image segmentation technique is presented for use in applications where the segmented regions correspond to meaningful objects, such as for image retrieval. The proposed technique utilizes the perceptual HSI (hue,saturation,intensity) color space. The scheme incorporates user interaction so that the best possible results can be achieved. Interaction with the user allows the segmentation algorithm to start efficiently and to refine the results. Interaction is performed for the key images (usually the first image or those where new ojects enter the scene) of the video-telephony sequence. The user is allowed to identify on the screen the relevant regions by marking their seeds. The user guidance can be given by the sender, by the receiver, or by both. The effectiveness of the algorithm is found to be much improved over techniques used in the past. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Image indexing is the process of image retrieval from databases of images or videos based on their contents. Specifically histogram-based algorithms are considered to be effective for color image indexing. We suggest a new method of color space quantization in the CIELUV color space, named weighted LUV quantization. With this method, each bin in the LUV space has a different weighting factor, which is applied to the histogram intersection. The weighted LUV histogram intersection provides the advantage of perceptual uniformity of the CIELUV color space. An additional advantage is the consideration of perceptual sensitivity to more saturated colors by the use of a weighting factor. © 1999 IEEE.

A new technique by which the electron micrographs of (111)7×7 Silicon are analyzed is discussed. In contrast to the conventional manner by which pseudocolor is introduced into normally gray scale surface scans, this method performs a high-level, knowledge based analysis to provide the viewer with additional information about the silicon sample at hand. Namely, blob recognition and analysis, as well as a priori knowledge of (111)7×7 Silicon can be utilized to delineate structural patterns and detect fault locations. The conveyance of information such as this is of much more consequence to an investigator interested in determining a sample’s uniformity and structure. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Reed-Solomon (RS) codecs are used for error control coding in many applications such as digital audio, digital TV, software radio, CD players, and wireless and satellite communications. This paper considers software-based implementation of RS codecs where special instructions are assumed to be used to program finite field multiplication datapaths inside a domain-specific programmable digital-signal processor (DS-PDSP). A heterogeneous digit-serial approach is presented, where the heterogeneity corresponds to the use of different digit-sizes in the multiply-accumulate (MAC for polynomial multiplication) and degree reduction (DEGRED for polynomial module operation) subarrays. The salient feature of this digit-serial approach is that only the digit-cells are implemented in hardware, the finite field multiplications are performed digit-serially in software by dynamically scheduling the internal digit-level operations in RS encoders and decoders. It is concluded that, for 2-error-correcting RS(n,k) codec implementations over finite field GF(2/sup 8/), a parallel MAC unit (of digit-size 8) and a DEGRED unit with digit-size 2 is the best datapath, with respect to least energy consumption and energy-delay products. With this datapath architecture and appropriate digit-serial scheduling strategies, more than 60% energy reduction and more than 1/3 energy delay reduction can be achieved compared with the parallel multiplication datapath based approach. © 1998 IEEE.
