The three‐dimensional Schr?dinger equationinverse scattering problem is solved using an orthogonalization approach. The plane waves propagating in free space are orthogonalized with respect to an inner product defined in terms of a Jost operator. The resulting integral equation is identical to the generalized Gel’fand–Levitan equation of Newton, although the present derivation is simpler and more physical than that of Newton. Newton’s generalized Marchenko equation is derived from the defining integral equation for the Jost operator. These integral equations are shown to be solved by fast algorithms derived directly from the properties of their solutions. This paper thus presents a simple interpretation of Newton’s two integral equations, two fast algorithms for solving these integral equations, and relations between the various approaches. This is a generalization of previously obtained results, which are also reviewed here, for the one‐dimensional inverse scattering problem.

Factor inverse matched filtering (FIMF) and factor inverse filtering (FIF) are signalprocessing techniques used to obtain desired signal responses. Both are especially useful procedures for ‘‘pulse‐compression’’ processing and channel measurements. The theory is developed for a simple channel and known noise power spectral density so that comparison may be made with matched filtering. Expressions for the pulse‐compression energy gain, nonflatness loss NFL, and total performance are derived. The NFL is useful in selecting the best among practical pulse‐compression modulations, and with FIMF and FIF, has been used extensively since 1974 by the authors and their co‐workers in underwater acoustic propagation measurements and ocean acoustictomography.

A layer stripping procedure for solving three‐dimensional Schr?dinger equationinverse scattering problems is developed. This procedure operates by recursively reconstructing the Radon transform of the potential from the jump in the Radon transform of the scattered field at the wave front. This reconstructed potential is then used to propagate the wave front and scattered field differentially further into the support of the potential. The connections between this differential procedure and integral equation procedures are then illustrated by the derivations of two well known exact integral equation procedures using the Radon transform and a generalized Radon transform. These procedures, as well as the layer stripping procedure, are then reduced to the familiar Born approximation result for this problem by neglecting multiple scattering events. This illustrates the central role of the Radon transform in both exact and approximate inversion procedures.

Concurrent process structured software can be used as a tool for studying the behavior of parallel digital signalprocessing systems. By modeling alternative architectures for a given application and characterizing the interactions of concurrent processes, an evaluation of relative efficiencies can be made. Presented here are models of three architectures for time domain harmonic scaling (TDHS) of speech. Their implementations and the software tools required to study their behavior are described.

We would like to welcome you to the proceedings of MRCS 2006, Workshop on Multimedia Content Representation, Classi?cation and Security, held Sept- ber 11–13, 2006, in Istanbul, Turkey. The goal of MRCS 2006 was to provide an erudite but friendly forum where academic and industrial researchers could interact, discuss emerging multimedia techniques and assess the signi?cance of content representation and security techniques within their problem domains. We received more than 190 submissions from 30 countries. All papers were subjected to thorough peer review. The ?nal decisions were based on the cri- cisms and recommendations of the reviewers and the relevance of papers to the goals of the conference. Only 52% of the papers submitted were accepted for inclusion in the program. In addition to the contributed papers, four distinguished researchers agreed to deliver keynote speeches, namely: – Ed Delp on multimedia security – Pierre Moulin on data hiding – John Smith on multimedia content-based indexing and search – Mar´ ?o A. T. Figueiredo on semi-supervised learning.

Visual informatics is a field of interest not just among the information technology and computerscience community, but also other related fields such as engineering, me- cal and health informatics and education starting in the early 1990s. Recently, the field is gaining more attention from researchers and industry. It has become a mul- disciplinary and trans-disciplinary field related to research areas such as computer vision, visualization, information visualization, real-time image processing, medical image processing, image information retrieval, virtual reality, augmented reality, - pressive visual mathematics, 3D graphics, multimedia-fusion, visual data mining, visual ontology, as well as services and visual culture. Various efforts has been - vested in different research, but operationally, many of these systems are not pro- nent in the mass market and thus knowledge and research on these phenomena within the mentioned areas need to be shared and disseminated. It is for this reason that the Visual Informatics Research Group from Universiti - bangsaan Malaysia (UKM) decided to spearhead this initiative to bring together experts in this very diversified but important research area so that more concerted efforts can be undertaken not just within the visual informatics community in Malaysia but from other parts of the world, namely, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and USA. This first International Visual Informatics Conference (IVIC 2009) was conducted collaboratively, by the visual informatics research community from the various public and private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, and hosted by UKM.

The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s- cess. We would like to especially thank Hong Lu for local organization, Qi Zhang for handling the publication of the proceedings, and Cheng Jin for looking after the c- ference website and publicity. We thank Fei Wu for organizing the special session on large-scale multimedia search in the social network settings.
