The direction of arrival (DOA) estimation task becomes more challenging when the sources are coherent. In this paper, a method has been suggested for the coherent DOA estimation. At first, the received signal of the uniform linear antenna array is divided into subarrays. For each of the subarrays, the multiple Toeplitz technique has been applied to produce the correlation matrix. Then, the forward backward smoothing has been exploited and the resultant correlation matrices are averaged over various snapshots to provide the improved-rank covariance matrix. At the last step, one of the subspace based DOA estimation schemes are leveraged to estimate the DOAs of the coherent sources. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method is superior over its rivals in various scenarios.

Image co-segmentation and co-localization exploit inter-image information to identify and extract foreground objects with a batch mode. However, they remain challenging when confronted with large object variations or complex backgrounds. This paper proposes a multi-view graph embedding (MV-Gem) learning scheme which integrates diversity, robustness and discernibility of object features to alleviate this phenomenon. To encourage the diversity, the deep co-information containing both low-layer general representations and high-layer semantic information is generated to form a multi-view feature pool for comprehensive co-object description. To enhance the robustness, a multi-view adaptive weighted learning is formulated to fuse the deep co-information for feature complementation. To ensure the discernibility, the graph embedding and sparse constraint are embedded into the fusion formulation for feature selection. The former aims to inherit important structures from multiple views, and the latter further selects important features to restrain irrelevant backgrounds. With these techniques, MV-Gem gradually recovers all co-objects through optimization iterations. Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that MV-Gem is capable of locating and delineating co-objects in an image group. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Harnessing the power of emotional intelligence by analyzing a person's behavioral and linguistic skills can help humans improve their approach to social interactions. In this paper, we propose an artificial intelligence-based stand-alone system that will allow us to classify and analyze facial expressions in real-time and perform sentiment analysis by examining the body of the text (extracted from audio) to understand the opinion expressed by it. This helps us provide a deeper understanding of how humans really feel at a given time. The proposed system uses a deep neural network (DNN) for classifying eight basic emotions based on features extracted from facial expressions and uses pretrained sentiment analysis tools to quantify text (extracted from audio) based on polarity. The system is implemented by extracting the audio and visual cues from real-time scenarios and using these extracted cues to perform facial expression recognition and text sentiment analysis. The integrated system extracts video and audio simultaneously with a frame rate of 4-5 fps. The facial emotion detection system successfully detects facial expressions of faces detected in real-time video with an accuracy of about 86.75%. The speech extracted is converted to text, cleaned, and processed to determine if the attitude of the speaker in a given situation is positive, negative, or neutral. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper aims at developing algorithms to automate the process of reading analog gauges at different operational industries, healthcare sector and automobiles using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. Proposed algorithms start with video stabilization using optical flow followed by image processing which performs segmentation using HSV color space and morphological operations. Next, Hough transform is applied to determine the dial region and pointer. Using the coordinates locating the pointer in the frame, angle made with minimum valued scale mark is calculated using trigonometry and evaluated reading is displayed in the form of text and a progress bar. The proposed algorithms for Analog Gauge Reader (AGR) is executed using open-source libraries such as OpenCV, NumPy, PIL with Python programming and it is developed in the PyCharm environment. The experimental results show significant decrease in the error with the introduction of image preprocessing and the generalizability of the algorithm to different types of analog gauges captured in different conditions of illuminance. The accuracy and precision of the algorithms is 99% to 100% in the experimental studies. © 2022 IEEE.

Groundbreaking features and functionalities are available in sports broadcasting programs, specifically in soccer games, such as post-game analysis, tracking of players, tracking of the ball, and associated teams' and players' statistical information. However, viewers don't have control to choose which features to view on-demand and aren't able to interact with any of these functionalities. Our system aims for the fundamental system of an on-demand viewer-driven application that would be able to track players on the field, identify formation changes, follow team strategy changes, and gather all statistical information of the player and the team on a single screen. In order to realize such an application, we focus on developing a method to track players on the field using multiple Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision techniques where our application employs facial recognition and jersey number recognition algorithms. As a live soccer game broadcast would have various camera views of the players, our custom-made database contains captured images from different scenarios of camera views such as different angles and zooms of the player and is used to train the model using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our system is scalable to different types of sports, such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, and more where players have their numbers on their jerseys and would be feasible to apply our system since soccer involves more players on the field than other sports games. © 2022 IEEE.

In this work, we propose a small-size and low-cost phase shifter based on defective microstrip structure (DMS) technique, with a modified reconfigurable unit cell (MRDMS) for WLAN applications at 5.2 GHz. The phase shifter is made up of an MRDMS unit, created by etching slots on a simple microstrip line with an outline of three bridges. To further increase the phase shift, a T-shaped slot is introduced in the central bridge and PIN diodes on the edges of the outer bridges are used. By switching the diodes on and off, the MRDMS unit cell is capable of operating in a variety of different modes to give a phase shift of 37.71° at 5.2 GHz. Additionally, MRDMS unit cells are cascaded for higher phase shift as required. Cascaded two- and four-cell phase shifters were designed and simulated in HFSS and a parametric study on various parameters was conducted to show the detailed operating properties of the proposed phase shifter. Compared to previously reported research, the present study shows that two cascaded phase shifters introduce 75.08° phase shifts and 151.75°, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the maximum phase shift obtained by a phase shifter based on MRDMS. © 2023 IEEE.

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a well-known feature-extraction technique for data analytic and pattern classification. As the dimensionality of multimedia data has increased in this big era, it is often to characterize data by tensors. Over the past two decades, researchers have thus explored to extend LDA to the general tensor space, especially in two common ways: LDA of tensors using tensor decomposition methods (by conversion of tensors to matrices) and LDA of tensors built upon the T-product. However, both of the aforementioned approaches have restrictions thereby. A critical problem about how to carry out LDA of arbitrary scatter tensors based on the Einstein product still remains unsolved by the existing methods. Therefore, we propose a novel tensor LDA (a.k.a. TLDA) approach, which can carry out the LDA of arbitrary-dimensional scatter-tensors without any need of tensor decomposition. Besides, for reducing the computation time, we also design a parallel paradigm to execute our proposed TLDA in this work. Numerical experiments conducted over real multimedia data demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed new TLDA in terms of classification accuracy. Moreover, the comparison of the classification accuracies, computational-complexities, and memory-complexities of our proposed novel TLDA scheme and other existing tensor-based LDA methods is made. By leveraging TLDA for high-dimensional feature extraction, segmentation, and user-item interaction data processing, future multimedia recommendation systems can facilitate more accurate, engaging, and satisfactory user experience over the Internet. © 1963-12012 IEEE.

Cell-free multiple-input-multiple-output generally uses a star topology for superior communication but faces high costs due to long cables. An economical alternative, the stripe topology, is suitable for specific deployments but cannot meet user demands in densely populated areas due to limited fronthaul capacity. To address these limitations, we propose a hybrid network structure combining stripe and star topologies, ensuring system performance while reducing deployment costs. In such a network, joint precoding and fronthaul compression is considered to maximize system sum-rate and an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed. However, the AO algorithm involves an iterative process and complex matrix calculations, making it unsuitable for practical applications. To deal with this issue, we propose a low-complexity iterative gradient descent (IGD) algorithm with simple matrix operations. To further reduce online computational complexity, we propose a novel deep unfolding neural network (DUNN) scheme, which is interpretable and scalable, based on the IGD algorithm. Simulation results show that the hybrid topology significantly improves system capacity compared to the stripe-only topology. Additionally, the DUNN achieves a tradeoff between the achievable sum-rate performance and the corresponding computational complexity. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper considers a communication system where a source sends time-sensitive information to its destination via queues in tandem. We assume that the arrival process as well as the service process (of each server) are memoryless, and each of the servers has no buffer. For this setup, we develop a recursive framework to characterize the mean peak age of information (PAoI) under preemptive and non-preemptive policies with $N$ servers having different service rates. For the preemptive case, the proposed framework also allows to obtain mean age of information (AoI).

In this paper, a novel filtering balun based on microstrip-to-slotline transition is proposed. Utilizing the inherent out-of-phase electric field distributions on the adjacent grounds of slotline, the balun function is realized. In order to realize the wide notched-band and stopband performance for radio astronomical applications, spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) metamaterial and multi-mode hairpin ring resonators (HRRs) are adopted. With these novel structures loaded, the proposed filtering balun exhibits a wide band from 1GHz to 6 GHz. The notched band is from 3.2 GHz to 4.4 GHz, within the notched band, the rejection level is better than 15 dB. Besides, the out-of-band suppression is below 35 dB in the wide frequency range from 6 GHz to 8 GHz. © 2023 IEEE.
