In this paper we propose a novel speed estimation technique, based on the characteristics of the power spectrum of mobile fading channels. Our analytic performance analysis, verified by Monte Carlo simulations, shows that the simple yet low-complexity estimator is not only robust to both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noises, but also insensitive to nonisotropic scattering observed in practical situations at the mobile. The estimator performs very well in both two- and three-dimensional propagation environments, where the latter case has not been studied so far, to the best of our knowledge. A distributed signature sequence adaptation scheme is considered for the downlink of MC-CDMA system, wherein each mobile user selfishly adapts its signature sequences to improve its own performance objective with no consideration to the other users in the system. Pricing is introduced to each user's performance objective to make that user notice the power it consumes. It then serves as a control signal to motivate users to efficiently share the limited transmission power at base station, even thought the adaptation of users signature sequences is independent. It is shown that the proposed adaptation scheme will converge to a set of signature sequences at which no user can further improve its own performance with unilateral adaptation. Simulation result indicates that a simple linear pricing function with a properly chosen unit price can significantly improve the system performance.

A rigorous analysis of the performance of a blind source extraction structure based on a linear predictor is provided. It is shown that by minimising the mean square prediction error, it is only possible to reach a solution subject to an arbitrary orthogonal transformation, in a manner similar to the principal component analysis. To remove this uncertainty, we propose a new cost function which caters for the ambiguous power levels of the source signals. A novel adaptive blind source extraction algorithm is derived and an alternative method with prewhitening is also introduced. Simulation results verify the proposed algorithms.

In the H.264/AVC video codec, multiple reference frames are applied for motion estimation to provide good coding efficiency. However, multiple reference frames also require more memory cost than one reference frame used in a video codec. To minimize the amount of memory requirement, this work proposes to add a decision unit in the H.264/AVC codec to store these reference frames. The said decision unit would look closely at macroblock (MB) of the currently decoded frame to determine it's storage type to be compressed or reconstructed data, according to the encoding parameters of subblocks in this MB. Furthermore, an adaptive scheme is proposed to store the currently decoded frame as reconstructed picture for lowering the computational complexity and using the buffer in full. Experimental results reveal that the proposed memory reduction scheme requires lower complexity and better picture quality than the conventional work. Therefore, the proposed memory reduction scheme can be widely used in various applications of the H.264/AVC codec to minimize the memory requirement.

A first order variable dependence (FOVD) probabilistic graphical model is introduced to capture the complex inter-event dependencies that are present in DNA sequencing data. In this framework, DNA base-calling is addressed as a parameter estimation problem using maximum likelihood methods. The FOVD model accounts for dependencies between neighboring alleles and statistically characterizes the size of signal peaks. Our experimental results suggest that the resulting unsupervised classification base-calling algorithms (i) achieve accuracy that exceeds on average that of the-state-of-the art base-callers, (ii) work well for a variety of data set types without requiring costly recalibration
