In this paper, we describe a freehand, three-dimensional ultrasound imaging system. The system uses an electromagnetic position and orientation measurement device to capture two-dimensional ultrasound images at arbitrary planar orientations in space. For robust performance, we use a novel electromagnetic interference detection algorithm that can be used to estimate the probability density function of position and orientation measurement errors. Another important contribution of the proposed system is its ability to reconstruct from multiple standard views. The multi-view reconstruction procedure results in significant reduction in reconstruction error. The system uses object-based 3D volume registration, allowing for arbitrary rigid object movements in inter-view acquisition. The proposed system has been validated on simulated data and a physical, 3D ultrasound calibration phantom. Quantitative experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the 3D registration system, and a significant reduction in the mean-squared error via the use of the proposed multi-view reconstruction method.

This paper presents the preliminary development of adaptive signal processing for distributed, waveform diverse, antenna arrays. The long term goal is to develop practical waveform-time-space adaptive processing algorithms for distributed apertures. A crucial issue identified in previous works is that, in practice, the target and interfering sources are not in the far-field of the antenna array. Recent work by the authors develops the model required to generate simulated data. This paper extends this work, focusing on using the model to formulate adaptive signal processing algorithms specifically for waveform diverse distributed apertures.

In this paper, we present distributed algorithms for tracking a moving source via an ad-hoc network of sensors. Tracking is performed by employing a Kalman filter at all detecting nodes in the network. The Kalman filter employed at any given node exploits the availability of source-location snapshot and prediction estimates, both of which are computed via distributed locally constructed algorithms over the ad-hoc network. As our brief simulation-based analysis reveals, the source-tracking performance of the proposed algorithms is a function of the motion dynamics of the source, the snapshot source-localization algorithm employed, the network topology, and the number of iterations employed in the distributed approximation algorithm

In this paper a method for the design of fuzzy controllers that overcome the problems of lack of guaranteed stability and of computational explosion is developed. The proposed fuzzy controller takes into account the technological constraints on the input and output variables and can be easily designed even for multivariable systems. In the first part of the paper, a new fuzzy controller, named natural logic controller, is presented. Then the stability properties of systems controlled by this type of controller are studied. Based on the results of this analysis a systematic approach to the design of multivariable constrained fuzzy control systems with guaranteed stability is developed

This paper presents a computer-assisted diagnostic system for mass detection and classification, which performs mass detection on regions of interest followed by the benign-malignant classification on detected masses. In order for mass detection to be effective, a sequence of preprocessing steps are designed to enhance the intensity of a region of interest, remove the noise effects and locate suspicious masses using five texture features generated from the spatial gray level difference matrix (SGLDM) and fractal dimension. Finally, a probabilistic neural network (PNN) coupled with entropic thresholding techniques is developed for mass extraction. Since the shapes of masses are crucial in classification between benignancy and malignancy, four shape features are further generated and joined with the five features previously used in mass detection to be implemented in another PNN for mass classification. To evaluate our designed system a data set collected in the Taichung Veteran General Hospital, Taiwan, R.O.C. was used for performance evaluation. The results are encouraging and have shown promise of our system.

Underwater acoustic propagation is characterized by multipath or multimode propagation. Ray theory and mode theory are not fully adequate for modeling physical reality. Impulse responses can be more accurately calculated using Gaussian beam theory. signal processors can be designed to take advantage of the channel complexity if the propagation is actually known so that detectability is increased. The proposed technique, channel matched filtering, synthetically backpropagates the wave front to a hypothesized source location. Accurate passive estimates of source location can be made without knowledge of the signal characteristics. GB theory can easily accommodate a range‐dependent deep water environment. A distributed signature sequence adaptation scheme is considered for the downlink of MC-CDMA system, wherein each mobile user selfishly adapts its signature sequences to improve its own performance using measurements at its location with no consideration to the performance of other users in the system. The convergence of such adaptation scheme is shown using game theory framework. That is, with any initial signature sequences in the system, the proposed adaptation scheme will definitely converges to a set of signature sequences at which no user can further improve its own performance with individual adaptation. © 2004 IEEE.
