Texture is one of important features of masses in mammograms. A recent texture unit-based texture spectrum approach, referred to as texture unit coding (TUC) has shown promise in texture classification. This paper presents a new application of the TUC to mass classification in mammograms. The TUC generates a texture spectrum for a texture image that can be used to describe the characteristics of masses. It also develops an information divergence (ID)-based discrimination criterion to measure the discrepancy between two texture spectra, a concept yet to explore in texture analysis. The TUC along with ID are further applied to mass classification in mammograms where the minimammographic database provided by the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) is used for experiments.

This work presents new texture shape feature coding (TSFC)-based computer aided diagnostic (CAD) classification methods for classification of masses on mammograms. It introduces a new concept of 1.5-order 3-neighbor 3/spl times/3 connectivity to extract texture shape features that can describe multiples of 22.5/spl deg/. In order to effectively utilize these shape features, two new methods of implementing TFSC are further proposed to convert these features to texture feature numbers (TFNs), TFNs in quaternary (TFNq) which expresses a TFN in quaternary expansion and TFNs in product (TFNx ) that represents a TFN in terms of a product. Both TFNq and TFNx can then produce texture shape histograms in the same way that a gray-level histogram is generated for an image. Such a texture shape histogram is further used to generate various shape features of masses on mammograms for classification. In order to demonstrate the promise of our TSFC-based CAD methods, the MiniMammographic database provided by the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) is used for experiments.

In this paper, two subband implementations of a frequency invariant beamformer (FIB) are studied. In the first structure, the received array signals are split into subbands and an FIB is operated in each of the corresponding decimated subbands, with a potential of achieving a lower computational complexity. As the spatio-temporal distribution of the subband signals is different from the original fullband signal, a modified design method of the FIB is proposed. Based on the subband implementation, we then change the sensor spacings of different subband signals so that lower frequency bands have a larger spacing, which results in a class of FIBs with scaled aperture with improved performance in lower frequencies. Several design examples are given to show the performance of our new structures.

In this contribution, we further examine our previous studies on the nonlinear texture image modelling based on Volterra series. The observed image, which is assumed to be expressed as an output of a two dimensional Volterra filter driven by a Gaussian input image, is corrupted by an independent Gaussian random noise. Both of the input image and filter parameters are unknown and hence, the problem can be classified as blind system identification. To estimate the unknown parameters, we formulate the equations that relate the parameters of the image model with the cumulant properties of the observed output image. The solution of the formulated equations which are highly nonlinear, is achieved through minimax type of optimization.

Packet reordering has been shown to be an ever-increasing phenomenon on the Internet and must be taken into account when considering performance analysis of both fixed, wireless and mixed media networks. Previous work (J. Bennet et al., 1999) has demonstrated that TCP suffers degraded performance in situations of high packet reordering. This paper will consider why video traffic over UDP also performs badly in situations of high packet reordering, due to the temporal inter-packet dependencies introduced by the MPEG video encoding structure. Wireless networks are especially prone to problems due to the higher levels of link layer retransmissions found in noisy wireless environments. An experimental investigation into the effects of video packet reordering using the Windows Media streaming system is presented. A method for invoking packet reordering is introduced, and a tool for client-side measurements of video quality is presented. Typical measurements of video performance undergoing reordering are shown, with a study of buffering occupancy at the client, and the potential impact this could have on video packet reordering demonstrated.

The problem of texture characterisation is attempted using a two-dimensional (2-D) autoregressive (AR) modelling technique. Each distinct texture is represented by a different set of 2-D AR model coefficients. A method to estimate AR model coefficients is proposed by relating the extended Yule-Walker system of equations in the third-order statistical domain to the same system in the second-order statistical domain using a constrained optimisation formulation. This method is applied to an image with a constant texture in block-by-block process, so that a number of sets of AR model coefficients are obtained. The minimum hierarchical clustering technique and a weighting scheme are then applied to these sets of coefficients, in order to obtain the final estimation.

We report on the development of English-Chinese bilingual speech applications on a VXML platform. VXML supports displayless voice browsing of Web content. We have developed the CU voice browser based on OpenVXI 2.0. We have also integrated the voice browser with the OpenSpeech Recognizer (for English speech recognition), CU RSBB (for Chinese speech recognition), Speechify (for English speech synthesis) and CU VOCAL (for Chinese speech synthesis) in order to support bilingual voice browsing. The CU voice browser includes an attribute for identifying the appropriate language for speech input/output, thereby invoking the appropriate speech engine for recognition/synthesis. We have developed two bilingual sample applications $CU weather and CU news. This paper provides the associated VXML documents that specify these bilingual dialogs for browsing weather and news information respectively.

A new family of IIR adaptive notch filters is presented. The family is based on a second-order factorization of the all-pass transfer function that forms the multiple notch filter. These realizations represent an extension of a previous ad-hoc scheme for adaptive notch filtering that avoids a high-order polynomial root finding in order to obtain the unknown frequencies of interest. An interesting aspect related to these novel algorithms is the fact that they introduce a different compromise between bias and SNR if compared with previous realizations available in the literature. Specifically, lower bias than in other approaches for low SNR can be achieved using the new realizations. This property is particularly attractive for multiple sinusoids estimation and tracking. In addition to the algorithm presentation, a discussion of the different properties and characteristics (stationary points, convergence) is included. Also, computer simulations are presented to illustrate the expected performance of the proposed adaptive filters.

Orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) has received considerable interest in hyperspectral image classification. It performs well when the complete knowledge of image endmembers is available. In reality, obtaining such prior knowledge is very difficult, if not impossible. This work investigates a variant of OSP, called uniform projection (UP) and presents a UP-based unsupervised algorithm for hyperspectral image classification. It first implements a uniform target detector (UTD) to find a set of interfering signatures, I, then another uniform I-annihilated detector (UIAD) to find desired target signatures. The signatures in I are combined with the UIAD found desired signatures to form a target signatures matrix M which can be used for supervised image classification. In this case, OSP can be used for this purpose. In order to demonstrate the utility of the proposed unsupervised classification technique for hyperspectral imagery, a series of computer simulations and experiments are conducted for analysis.
